"Among the many who are seek
ing this position in the Georgia
House, vve know of none more com
petent or deserving the support of
the members than Judge W B Butt,
o. Marion conn y.IIe has been a mem
ber of the bofly for two or more ses

ilant in his duties, ami hence is
thoroughly conversant with a! 1 the
routine of the business and affairs
pertaining to tiio office and parliam
entary usages. lie has been judge ol

which is as necessary to the chief
clerk as any member of the Legisla

Georgia during the late revolution.
Another consideration which com
mends liim*is that lie is the only gen
tleman aspir big to the position from
this section, and our own Represen

their utmost endeavors to advance
his interest. Western Geoigia has

KSI’I-AS ATIOJi FROM SEIEX
Mr. Editor: My piece in favo"
of the old county officers has been
misunderstood by some as casting
slurs on those opposed to them. 1
want to say through your columns
that such was not my purpose. I
wanted to warn the people, first,
against certain blinding prejudices
about lining in town and countrv,
church membership, &c, and second
ly against men who would try to in
fluence us through these prejudices.
1 do not see how any cand'date could
object to that.except, such as expect
ed to make use of those prejudices.
I did not intend to insinuate that any
of them would do such a thing, but f
know that such things have been done
and might be again.
Some say that in my conclusion, I
reflect by deduction, severely on the
new candidates. 1 never meant to do
so. I only tried to lay down general
principles, for our government in
choosing officers, —not to make spe-
cific or general charges against indi
viduals who I could rot support. I
only intended this much and no more:
The old officers having held their
places for years, are necessarily more
competent, less ignorant and less in
experienced in the discharge of the
offices than those who never filled
them, how intelligent, educated, ex
perienced and competent they might
be, speaking in a general sense. I
took this plain common sense look at
the situation and no other. I sub- l
muted my piece to a friend for revi- j
siou and correction, and neither he
nor I; aw this big mare's nest chat has
been hatched out of it since it was
printed. I have got the greatest re
spect and coniidence for a good many
ol the candidates that ruth and I do
A I
not in end 'o lie misunderstood l
am sorry to have caused off-nsc, and
am anxious that this piece will
smooilio down tho rough places m
their discontent, and tlnP, hereafter,
peace will reign iu Mari n as well as
in Warsaw.
My gray hairs Imve witnessed ma
ny of my mis ukes, but writing polit
ical letters tor tho benefit of my coun
ty, is one I will not: commit ngdn
soon—in two years anyhow, 1 laid
no iika that a plain spoken, well
meant old man could be so misunder
stood ns i have been.
I hope you will publish this and
make a 1 ! corrections, for my defense.
I ranain, as ever, your friend.

nerly ought to have a hundred and
fifty regular studen.s, mid wo sin
cerely hope that our peonle will out

preside, wii.li that liber.dity which it.
deserves. They at*t gentlemen every
way pre-eminently qualified to dis
charge the duties of their positions,
and children, young nun and young
ladies could not be placed in bettor
hands than theirs. The health of
Buena Vista is unsurpassed, society
of the best and board in first-class lam
i i'iies cheaper than anywhere elso in

; their children from home to school,
would do well to send t hem here.

say that the statement made in a
letter !o the 1 Atlanta Republican, re
specting the last election in this

tion or knowledge of the Republican
party of Marion. The staiemeuts
were all false, no fairer election ever
! having been held in this courtly, I
j have made dilligent inquiry of tin

have oeen unable to find the author
of the libellous letter referred to
above. We were entirely satislled'
with the fairness oe l'* e election, and
acquiesced cheerfully in the result.
