Keceut rains have pul the ground in good order, but it is consid ered too late for a large crop to be sown. The Atlanta Times has a lengthly article upon Atlanta’s mule trade, which it esti mates at $1,500,000 dor annum. It says fully 1,600 mules arc brought there annually from Tennessee and Kentucky, the larger portion being from the latter state. Mr. E. E. Forry, of the United States coast survey, is at work with a number of bands preparing to build an observatory on the top ®f Moore’s Knob, near Piedmont Springs, in Stoke county, North Carolina, A MAN for two years past living near little Rock, Ark., under the game of Bill Jones, confessed upon his death bed, a few days ag®, that his name was Theopolis, and that about two years ago he killed a man near his home, sixteen miles from Nashville, and fled the country. 1 ROM Ist September to 28th October there' were 1,167 deaths, in Savannah, eight hun dred and seventy-three white and three hun dred and twenty-four colored, out of a pop ulation 26th October of 7,353 whites and 11,938 colored. Among the deaths were two doctors, seven clergymen, seven policemen, and five sisters of charity. Ataxta Constitution: Maj. Waid Jlill, an old and highly respected citizen of this city, died last week. He was ninety-two years old, and was until a few months ago quite an active man. He was born in Vir ginia, was in the war of 1812, and was for merly a citizen of Alabama, where he was a member of the legislature for several terms. On Tuesday last five members of a family in Rockingham, Va., four gentlemen and one lady, weighed 1,281. They weighed separate ly three hundred and fifteen, two hundred and ninty-four, two hundred and thirty-two, two hundred and thirty-two, two hundred and ten. The young gentleman who kicked the beam at two hundred and ten is eighteen years old and hopes, by proper attention to his health, in due time to become full grown. A correspondent of the Charleston (S. C.) News and Courier gives a graphic de scription ol a hear chase in Orange parish, in which the whole community joined. Bruin was finally killed, and bis weight proved to he one hundred and ninety-five pounds. Some of the negroes inspected him, exclaiming: “Great God! en we been huntin' possum in dah swamp, too.’’ Says the Comanche (Texas), Chief: As was apprehended, the grasshoppers have de posited their eggs ail over the country, and we may therefore, look for them in count less millions next spring. A more terrible calamity could scarcely befall our planters, but. if we are permitted to judge from the past history of these insects, the chances are greatly in favor of their destruction by the heavy rains that generally fall about" that season of the year. CENTENNIA r, AWA It IIS. The following classification of the awards thus far made by the centennial judges, is of interest at this juncture : To the 8175 American exhibitors 3600 medals have been given, and 5107 to the 22,689 exhibitors from the rest of the world. In the department of ores and metals Netv England had fifty-five med als, the middle states one] hundred and twenty-two, the western states iifty-thee, the southern states twenty-eight, and the Pacific states and territories ninety five. In general manufactures New England obtained eight hundred and iorty-nine medals, the middle states eight hundred and thirty-seven, the western one hundred and twenty-five, the southern eighty-six, and the Pacific thir teen. In machinery and inventions New England has one hundred and eleven medals, while the middle states have three hundred and three, the western eighty-two, the southern thirteen, and the Pacific states one. In agricultural and miscellaneous products New Eng land has one hundred and four medals, the middle states have six hundred and two; the western ninety-four, the south ern forty-eight, and the Pacific si±then. In the department of education and sci ence, including music and instruments ot precision, New England has sixty-five, the middle states have one hundred and ninety-eight, the western states sixty, the southern states twenty-six, and the Pacific states one. In the fine-arts group, exclusive of medals awarded to oil paint ings, New England has eight medals, the middle states have forty-eight, the western states six, the southern two, and the Pacific three. The total number ©f medals for New England thus far award ed is eight hundred and ninety, for the middle states two thousand and ten, for the western four hundred and twenty, for the southern two hundred and thir teen, and for the Pacific states one hun dred and twenty-nine. There are thirty-eight awards for American oil paintings. .. During a thunder-storm a gentleman takes a hack down Elysees toward the Faubourg St. Germain. He noticed that at every flash of lightning his driverseriously makes the sign of the cross, and says: “I observe * that you cross yourself. You",do well.” “Oh, yes. It is always well where there are so many trees, but once we get into the streets, I don’t give a curse.”— Paris Figaro. A RICH SHOEMAKER, In the taxablesof Brooklyn appears the name ofa German whose annual payments for taxes exceeds those of many of the so-called princely merchants who live on the heights. He pays taxes yearly upon real and personal property assessed at $250,000, but worth, probably, double that amount. Yet this man works hard at the bench every *iay, and if he spends a dollar in recreation for his wife and children on Sunday he thinks it is a big thing. He has no help, but wrks for a few customers, doing all their work and caiing nothing about any of them. If they are displeased with his way ol doing things lie simply says they can take their work elsewhere, and he sorely tries their patience by his habit of disappointing customers as to time. This man collects his own rents, builds two or three new houses every year, and from his frugal habits promises, if his life is long spared, to be the wealthiest of all Brooklynites. His yearly income from real estate is not less than $15,000 per annum, but he re gards idleness as a sin, and works every day upon boots and shoes as regularly as if his bread and butter were in jeop ardy. ORIGIN or THE GOD HYMEN. Danchet, the French poet, tells us re specting the deification of Hymen that he was a young man of Athens, obscurely born, hut extremely handsome. Falling in love with a lady of distinction, he dis guised himself in a female habit in order to get across to her and erjoy the pleas ure of her company. As he happened to be one day in his disguise, with his mistress and her female companions, celebrating on the eea-shore the rites of Ceres Eleusina, a gang of pirates came upon them by surprise and carried them off. The pirates, having conveyed them to a distant island, got drunk for joy and fell asleep. Hymen sized his opportunity, armed the virgins, and dis patched the pirates ; after which, leaving the ladies on the island, he went in haste to Athens, where he told his adventure to all the parents, and demanded her he loved in marriage as a ransom. His re quest was granted, and so fortunate was the marriage that the name of Hymen was ever afterward invoked in all future nuptials, and in progress of time the Greeks enrolled him among their gods. ..Commodore Vanderbilt advised William to always act on his own judg ment ;he had better be wrong than fol low another’s counsel. He evidently agrees with the old Hoosier who gave this parting advice to bis son: “Ike ) stick to yer own underpinnin’ and not go bobbin’ round to find somebody else’s stonewall. You’d alius better, lick the devil with yer own whip than let the devil lick you with another man’s.” We would advise those of our readers whose buildings or fences require paint ing, or whose roofs are in need of re pairs, to send at onoe for pamphlet and price list of Asbestos Paints, Hoofing, Roof Paint and Cement. These articles, which are of unquestioned reliability, are also the most economical of any in use lor such purposes. The Centennial Exposition medal and diploma of merit have been awarded to the manufacturer, Mr. H. W. Johns, 87 Maiden Lane, New York, who within the past twenty years has built up the most extensive and’ suc cessful business in this line in the world. Mr. Johns also manufactures Asbestos paper, cloth steam pipe, and boiler cover ings, steam packing, sheathings, etc., which are in use in every civilized coun try. Fortune Favors the Brave. In days gone by, when civilization had just begun to dawn upon the human race, Chance reigned predominant in the affairs of men. The Ooddess of Fortune smiled on those as Chance prescribed. Armies fell, and were shorn of glory in one day, while wealth and opulence crowned the victor. Men rose from the very hannts of poverty, and by a lucky stroke of the sword gained honor and riches. But time has wrought a material change. He no more struggles in blood for wealth, when a more pacific opportunity afford itself. For instance, sl2, $6 or $3 gives an equal chance for the good, round gifts of SIOO,OOO, $50,000, $25,000, etc., to those who may feel inclined to invest in a bona fide and legitimate enter prise like the “Kentucky Cash Distribution Company,” of Frankfort, Ky. See their ad vertisement elsewhere. Chapped hands, lace, pimplea, ring, worm, saltrheum, and other cutaneous affec tions cured and rough skin made sott and smoth, by using Juniper Tar Soap. Be care ful to get only mat made by Casw ell, Hazard & Cos., New York, as there are many imita tions made with common tar, all of which are worthless. We often see a large stock of cattle which do not seem to thrive, and come out “springpoor,” ail for want of something to start them in the right direction. One dol lar’s worth of teheridan’s Cavalry Condition Powders, given to such a stock occasionally during the winter, would he worth more than an extra half ton of hay. Have you a severe wrench or sprain ? Have you rheumatism in any form!' Have you stiff' neck or bunches caused by rheu matic pains? If so, Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment is a specific remedy, used intern ally and externally. Prematpee loss of hair, which is so common nowadays, may be entirely pre vented by the use of Burnett’s Cocoaine. C'riJLLS, CBJJjLS. —Wintersmith’s Tonic ,Sy rup or improved Chill Cure, is a certain remedy for every form of Fever and Ague. Its superiority over all other remedies is in the fast that the cure is a permanent one— the Chill, when not return. Unlike Chill remedies generally, it requires no pur gative to be taken with it; the medicine itself ac ting gently and agreeably upon the liver and bowels, effectually removing the cause of the disease, not merely temporarily checking it as in of quinine.
