riding down Caineion (formerly
Pennsylvania) avenue, about 3 p. m.
lie w-as fired at by an assassin who
gave his name as Peter Jones. Fort
unately, the miscreant’s aim was
poor, and our beloved Emperor es
caped unhurt. The ruffian was
promptly seized, disarmed and re
moved to the Bastile. where to-day,
steel boot will be applied lo hin, in
order to ascertain, if possible, the
names of bis accomplices or in-tiga
tors. His Imperial Majesty, after the
shot had been fired at him, displayed
no emotion, and in driving past the
Treasury, was greeted by repeated
cheers by Lis faith'ul subjects, who
thus testified their joy at his escape.

Francis Adams, Mantdn Marble,
Thos. P. Baya*d and several other
desperadoes having succeeded by the
use of birrcls of money in corrupting
their guards, freed themselves, on
the night of the 24th ult., from
their shackles, and made their
escape to the beacti, were they seized
a boat and pushed off through the
surf, intending evidendy to reach a
suspicious-looking cralt that had
been seen on the offing. Fortunately
the absence of the criminals was soon
discovered and the guards then put
off and re-captured them. • It is
thought that they contemplated es
caping to the coast of Georgia,where
the outlaws Stephens and Gordon
would have raised the banner of
rebellion and proclaimed the repub
lic.
