Editor Times: —A correspondent
in \our issue of the 4th, did me th°
honor to suggest, my name in con
nection with the Constitutional Con
vention.
Highly appr< dating the kind men
tion, I beg to say, that a seat in the
Convention would probably not l*e
refused by any: nevertheless, 1 would
ho loath to enter into a struggle lor
an elec ion, with those of my friends
who havo been similarly named, to
be decided by the preference of our
personal Iriiuds in the district.
I see no reason, Mr. Editor, why
the selection of candid tes lor (lie
Convention in each district should
not be made a Democratic measure,
to be decided by party usage. With
a majority of 80,000 in the Stale, and
a majority in each Senatorial di-t rict
of the State, save one, it i- an unde
niable fact that the Democratic par
ly will bo Lc'.d responsible for the
actions of a Convention which, if call
ed, will not, perhaps contain a single
member of the Ilepub ieari party.
The differences in our own j arty as
to the necessity ol the cn 1, should in
nowise atfet, the delegates to the
Convention, if it should be called.
This district is entitled to live, del
egates. If there bo no nomination
or selection of candidates, there will
perhaps bo six or eight candidates
from Mttscoge ~and Uvo or three to
each t'f t 1 e counties of Marion and
Chattahoochee. In the gonerd
Struggle w.lll the numerical majori
ty in Muscogee, is it, fair to presumo
Dial a jn-1 and equitable division
annng all the count es wi!i be made V
I think not.
With very great confidence in the
justice of the plan, I would suggest a
division of the number rf delegates
sinning the threo counties, to wit :
Muscogee 3, Chattahoochee 1, Man
on 1. And to tl.c end that tins re, -
icsentation In carried out, lei each
county seket its candidate or e ndi-.
dates in its own time, and the five thus
< lecti and become the ticki t for slie sup
port of the party in tin- entire distinct.
Then, it lho Convention should be
called, each c unity would have an
immediate representative, h is p an,
*1 am quite sure, won and l e ace, ptabh
to the other comities of the dis r et,
besides freeing thi- important election
from the scenes and struggle around
iijo polls, only too common at cadi
of our reclining elections.
Very respectfully.
