WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 4, 1877.
THE FOURTH OF JULY.
To-dav is the 4th day of July, the
the anniversary of the declaration of
independence that declared resist
anec to the stamp act, and oppressive
tariffs on av ak people. One hun
dred ana one years ago, this day rose
suddenly in importance, and at every
stage ot the government it has had
many admirers, who regarded it
as holy as they did the Sabbath.
We have prospered and suffered.
Cleaned up and worn out much land.
Owned negroes and lost them.
Sought itt Congress, in State Legis
latures, on the hustings, to uphold
the purity of civil liberty and justice,
we have fought for four years in hard
ship and blood, bodily sufiering, and
mental anxiety, to preserve untar
nished the freedom, and a dislike to
stamp acts, and oppressive tmiffs,
declared on this day 101 years ago;
yet, we’ve paid largely in stamp tax.
Let us reverently remember the pure
patriotism of our ancestors, aud feel
ftrgly, yet pat* iotically, contrast the
drifting of political affairs, and then
look at the future with the resolve
to be better.
—Mr. John W. Slaughter showed
bs 'ast Saturday an excellent piece
of corn, in which he is experimenting
with ebufas planted in the drill.
Both, corn and ehufas, are doing well.
"We were shown, also, some ehufas
which had been transplanted, simi
lar to the potato. Mr. S. says he
intends next year to try more large
ly the transplanting of the chufa,
which he thinks is the surest way of
getting a stand. He has about four
acres which were transplanted this
year.
He, also, showed us a cotton field
which has been manured with the
Wilcox & Gibbs guano,which/averages
about knee high.
His theory is that cotton fertilized
with guauo, pays for itself in a sav
ing of hoe work, by forcing the plant
to rapid growth out of the way early,
aud for that reason, if no other, he
intends using guano. That, it ap
pears, is rather anew one, though it
lboks reasonable.
We hope our delegatee to the consti
tutional convention Will remember that
Mr 0. H. Williams of Columbus is not
only a candidate for the Clerk of ti e
donvention, but also he is eminent fit
for the place, and in our opinion he
dught to have it.
—
W. 11. Iluntly of Meriwether counlv
lias recently returned from a three years
tour in Europe, and says the people
have an astonishing correct knowledge
of the cotton pi ospects here and have
already determined that the ptice3 shall
rule low next season.
Newton Snot was the man who was
engaged in the .fight in Marion county.
w" 1 made up the account from the An
gus, an. s not aware there was a
minister hv the name of Short in the
county. Most assuredly the Argus
must have had the name of “J. Short
for wo never heard of it until wa saw
the paper.— Columbus Enquirer.
If our neigbborwill carefully read our
article again wo think W. J- Short will

SHARP PRACTICE,
The crowd of Radical office seek >rs
who have been vainly busy of late in
trying to defeat the re a pointmont
of W. L. Clarke, Internal Revenue
collector for Georgia, are said to
have stuffed the pigeon holes of the
Treasury Department with bogus let
ters from men of straw, falsely rep
resented to be living in var ous coun
ties of the Sfate, and it is upon these
documents that Harris in the Atlanta
Independent founds his insinuations
and charges against Clarke. That is
sharp practice—Harke is one of the
few Federal officers in this State, who
lias gained the good opinion of ihe
people, and the reputation of an hon
est and faithful, as well as an accom
modating public officer. His ene
mies show what they are when they
try to hunt him down with buckets
letters. —Telegraph dc Messenger.
Bad hoys never chunk at barren
fruit ttees, nor do anonvmous accus
ers select any but worthy subjects to
injure. Some of those anonymous
patriots, feeling Mr. Clarke’s bond
was too insecure attempted, we learn,
a sensation in that direction, when
to their supprise several SIO,OOO and
$20,000 bondsmen, more than were
necessary, sprung up all around.
A young Russian soldier, stationed
in Atlanta, committed suicide, by
cutting his throat from ear to ear
and then jumping from a porch 20
.eet high on the parement below.
Hon. Robt. Toombs ha3 lost tho
sight of one of his eyes. We hope it,
will prove to bo only temporary.
Telegraph post arc likely to be su
perceded by underground wires. They
have been in use long enough to prove
economy, freedom from danger, and
certainty of transmission.
The people of Talbotton aro trying
to have a railroad built irorn that town
to Geneva. Five of the most promi
nent men ot Talbot county intends sur
veying a route fur the purpose this
