The official log contains this on I try:
"August 15, latitude —, longitude—,
James Colton, a stowaway, fell from
tbe loretopgallant yard to the duck,
-mid was instantly killed."
11 August 10, latitude —.longitude—,
William Bean, an ordinary seaman,
while the funeral service was being
i ciiii over die body of Colton, jumped
■from the topgallant rail and sank im
mediately. * Ship hove to at tlmtim .
A boat was lowered, but no traces of
the man were discerned."
‘•That, ’ said the captain, ‘ is un
entry to the yarn I’ll sj in you,” as a
31 ail reporter sat in his cabin yester
day.
“I shipped bean in Liverpool. He
was a tall, good-looking \ouug fel
low, and did not appear to be much
of a st aiming man by his appearance,
but had a couple of good dischaiges
and I ;ook him. After he went for
ward among the men, I did not notice
him again until the second day out.
The mato c ime aft lugging along a
little bit of a fellow with snort curly
hair and a round face, whom he had
lound stowed away under the tore
batch. A lot of the men got around
to see what I was going to say about
it.
“Wnat the blazes made >ou hide
in my ship? I said, lie didn’t an
swer a word, and seemed scar, and to
death. Then Beau stepped up and
said :
‘I know that, young man, Captain ;
ht: is an old chum of mine. He want
ed to get a passage to Callornia, and
had no money.’
I swore some at them both, and
then sent Colton off' in charge of the
third mate, who soon got him to work
on a broom. He handled the broom
pretty well, and took sort of polishing
up the brass work, and seemed so in
clined to be industrious that I let him
out of the mate’s Watch, and gave him
odd jobs about the cabin, lending the
steward a hand and so on. He had
a!l night in, and better grub than
they got in the forecaslle, but he used
to always slip some of it forward to
Bean. Those two were a great deal
together on Bean’s watch and Colton
■would sometimes stay up all night
with him. Then ho got to like going
up aloft, and used to liandh the roy
als as well ns any ordinary seamen on
board. One day the mate said to
me, 'T heard those two men, Bean
and Colton, talking together last
night, so, and there is something
queer about it. Bean was t< lling hint
that his mother and brothers would
never forgive him, and the best thing
to do when tic got to San Francisco,
would be to writ to some friend ai
Lome, but not let his people know
where he was. Colton w. s crying and

I t< HI tho mute t>> nuke work ns

wTien he brought me up a cup of tea
on the poop, 1 asked him if his friends
knew that lie had started lor (Julilor
nia.
‘0 no,' he said, ‘but 1 could not
ge along well at home unit 1 thought
it best to go away.’
You knew Bean well at home, ddn’t
you ? I asked.
‘Yes, sir,' said he and looked red
and confused.
‘Did lie induce you to run away?’
‘No; no,’ said lie, ‘but he told me
In was corning in this ship.’ That
was all I said about it then. A w.-ek
or so afterwards, when ho was clean
ing up my cabin, he got bold of a
photograph of my 'ife, wi ich an ar
list in Liverpool had undertaken to
co'or ari l had made a botch of it.
‘Dal yon ever do any pamting? I
asked. H< said h<- could paint a lit
tle, and I got a box of water color
paints from the third mate and some
brushes and gave him a f. w photo
graphs to color. You see how wed
he did it. He surprised me.”
Then the captain opened his album
and showed the reporter some pho
toginphs which were v ry skillfully
and artistically re-toucherl.
“I saw him once,” continued the,
captain, “painting the photograph of
a tine old lady. He told me it was
Bean’: mother” Well, to cotne to the
day tho accident occurred. I was
sitting on deck at the time, and Bean
and Colton w.s si. ting for’nrd. I was
just going to call the young chap a F t
to help the sail-m ker, who was work
ing on the poop, when a squall came
along. The mate sang out, the roy
al halyards were let go and Colton
jumped into the (ore rigging to get
aloft and stow the foreroyals for it
was darkening up to windward. Bean
also got into the rigging and seem, and
to want to got up, but Colton got
ahead of him."
‘‘He laid out on the yard, go! hold
ot the canvass, and the next thing we
knew, something came whirling down
on deck with a thud that made me
shudder. The first one at the poor
fellow's side was Bean. He turned
him over, for the face was toward the
deck, and then he fell down in a fit,
and the boatswain attended to him.
The watch carri. il Colton’s body aft.
llis neck was broken. I nulled oil
t lie shii t. and I knew the whole story,”
and the skipper look a glass of sherry
and his eyes were moist.
“What was the mystery?” asked
the reporter.
“Well ’’said the captian,“just this:
Colton did not belong to our side of
thx deck. The body that was sewed
up and launched in o the deep was a
young woman, and die was Bean’s
wife, for 1 found the marriage certifi
cate in Bean’s trunk, wi ll some let
ters that, partially esp'aiued the mat
in.. But I’ll tell you about that after
wards. As soon as Bean got right h<
value alt, looking like a ghost, and he
knew bv my lace that I had discov
ered the secret.
“Captain,” said he, taking off bis
hat, “would you have any objection
to letting me stay alone with it this
night ?” ' .
“I let him stay all night by the
body, and I can imagined what the
poor fellow suffered. 1 never saw such
a despairing face on a man in my life
as that wh eh met me when I opened
the cabin door and the bands were
summoned for the funeral services.
He stood be un il the last moment,
ami when the body slipped off into
the sea, and til shot carried it down,
down into the blue depths, be watch
ed until it disappeared. Then he
jumped on the topgallant rail, and be
fore any one co tld grab him he was
gone.”
-I hunted through bis trunk,” said
the skipper, “and I found a bundle
of letters which I am going to inclose
to his friends at borne. From what
I could learn from tnera ft appears
that Bean (which was an assumed
name) was a young fellow of good
family, but v.ry wild The girl’s
people were also well off and reput
ab'e. She knew him from a boy and
ran away with him, and they were
married. He went to sea after that
and sir wen' back ‘o school. When
be returned lit y tried o make it up
w uj the old lolks, but they would
not have it. So the young fools,
wit .out a sixpence to bless them
selves with, came on boiud my ship.
Sounds like a novel, but it is all just
as I told you, and here uro the
proofs. ”
"Uave you any objection to my giv
ing the name of the ship V said the
reporter.
“Well,” said the skipper, “I don’t
like that sort of a sensation, and the
owners don’t wan those sort of things
about, the ship in he papers. Here
is the bo t hong side, said the Cap
tain, ami tiie reporter took a seat, in
the stern-ala ets, and was soon at the
landing.

Home-Life a Hundred Years ago.
One bundl ed years ago not a pound
of coal nor a cubic foot of illuminating
gas had been burned in the country.
No iron stoves were used, and no con
trivances for economising In at were
employed until I>r. Franklin invented
the iron-framed fire-place which si ill
bears his name. All th>- cooking and
warming in town and country were
done by tl e aid of fire kindled on the
brick oven. Pine knots or tallow
candles furnished the light for die
long winter nights, and sanded floors
supplied the place ol mgs and car
pels The water used for household
purposes was drawn from deep wells
by the sweep. No form of pump was
used in this country until after the
present century. Ther wore no fric
tion matches in those early days by
which a fire could b easily kindled;
and ii tne lire went on upon the
hearth ov. i nigh , and the tinder was
damp, so the spa k wouid not ca cli,
the alternative remained of wading
through the snow a miie or two to
borrow a brand from a neiglibo .
Oulv one room m any house was
warm unless one of tne family was ill;
in nil tho rest the temperature was at
zero during many nights of the win

to their beds in in a temperature
colder than tha of our modern barns

Situated aOout four miles south

production, surpasses anything yet
discovered .n that county. The well
was sunk by ssrs. M. Brown-on,

was completed upward of amon'h

where the oil was expected. Before
abandoning the well tho owners te

it must be stated that the Casing i a

its present position, the fresh water
from tha upper portion of tne bole
rushed into the ’.veil at tiie bottom of
the casing in great quantity. As ii
did so, the gas took hold of it, and
landed i upon the surface of the earth,

top of the derrick. There, in that
condition, it continues to gush and
blow to this day, and urn;, for all time
to come. It is estimated tb.-.t at 1-asi

A Curious Fl;eiiieiim
Mr. Van Dorn complained Saturday
that i' seemed to him that som-thing
was wrapped lightly about the thumb
on tho arm which was removed by am
putation Saturday, and on oxamin rig
the aim, which had been laid by I)r.
Siannaid on a board in the rear room ot
ln store, it. was found that a thread had
accident ah v become entangled about the
thumb and that in ihe swelling of the
thumb the thread had made a crease
around it. The thread was remove
and Mr. Van Dorn, without knowing
that the string was wiapped mound the
thumb, (said hat it felt much better.
Soon niter Dr. Stennard made an expe •
iment to further test the curious phe
nomenon, and tied the thumb and little
finger firmly together and laid a ha'ch
, on the hand. Van Dorn soon com
menced to complain of pain in the hand
and firmly, ilia", it seemed that the
thumb and finger were tied together.
The string was removed, and the hand
straightened out again, when die pa
tient wi li no knowledge of what had
been done, said that the arrn fed be'er
than it had any time since the amputa
tion.
The above are the facts, on which we
have i.o theory to advance regarding the
