Truth Stranger than Fiction.
That truth is stranger than fiction
is an old and true saying. Every clay
stranger events occur than could lie
turned out of llio warp and w of fur
nished by' the roost lorlile-bmincd
novelist. One of the latest of strange
occurrences came lo pass a few days
ago on the steamer Contra Co.-ta,
plying between Vallejo and a point
opposite, on tho Martinez railroad.—
As the passengers from this city cn
route to Vallijo were scrambling or.
the boat, a lady needing a little as
sistance with her packages received
it from a Mr, G , a grain sp< c
ulator of this city, who was going to
Vallejo on a visit. On the iady’s
reaching the cabin conversation cu
sued, during which each learned that
the other was from Kentucky, and
from the very same town. In an
swer to liis inquiry the lady gave Mr.
G her name, when tlio latter
immediately claimed her as his own
wife. The lady, thinking the genilc
lnan either a maniac or an adventur
er, plied him with questions, tho an
swers to which convinced her that
Mr. G. was her husband, and none
other. The two had married in ISSS,
and about a year after the husband
started for Loverpooi. The vessel
was wrecked and tho crew
anil passengers wero supposed
to have been lost. The husband was
picked up and taken to a foreign
port, where ho lay ill for fifteen
months. Meanwhile his wife came
to California and all traces of her
wero lost by her husband. Although
search had boon made, he had never
found her until this renn'on took
placo in the manner described. The
happy couple proceeded to Vallejo,
when the mother introdi ceil a young
lady to her husband as his daughter.

TAKE CARE.
Phosphorus is dangerous i tuff to
, handle. A young man, in traveling,
lit a match by scratching it with his
thumb nail, and a piece ol the incan
dcscont phosphorus penetrated un
der the nail and made a slight burn,
to w hich ho paid no attention. But
after an hour the pain became in
tense; the thumb swelled, then the
hand, and next the forearm. Ho
was obliged to alight at a station on
the journey and send for a medical
man, who declared that immediate
amputation of the arm was necessa
ry. The patient insisted on postpon
ing the operation for a few Loin sun
til the arrival of his father, for whom
lie had telegraphed. Before the lat
ter, however, could reach his son it
was too late; the poisonous matter
had gained the arm, then the shoul
der, and any operation became im
possible. Ho died in great agony in
only twenty-seven hours after the
burn. The case shows the danger of
handling phosphorus in the manner
thus described.—Chicago Lodger.

A Table Land Across the Gulf

trip was one primarily for dredging,
to extend tlm work of rounding; anil
lie accordingly ran a lino ol sound

from COO to 1,000 fathoms. At tin
northeast end of this line, in about

suddenly increased, in a distance of
15 miles, from 457 to 1,38(5 fathoms.
Those depths obtained hy Com

A SUSPICIOUS ALABAMIAN.
There is a man down in Alabama
who lias been writing t<> the Unit, and
States Treasurer about a S2O note,
One corner of which was torn off.—
lie wanted a now note for it, and
sent a diagram of the torn one. He
was vi ry anxious, Lowovor, to g;i
hold of lhe new note before lie gnv
up the old one. Tho Treasurer wrote
to him to send on the old note and it
would lie redeemed. After consid
erable delay the note came to the
Trcasuiy to-day. The man was ev
idently doubtful as to the honesty of
t!io Treasurer. He enclosed the note
in the following letter: “Yours at
hand requiring of me to fend the S2O
mutilated United States note, I’ll
act, hoping and trusting that you
will do tiic business honestly and
strictly for me. Now, of course, you
are unknown to me, though this need
not prevent your honesty, to-wit, the
transacting of tho übovcjbusiness.
Reply as soon os possible.” Anew
note was sent the Alabama man to
day.—Washington Post.

Treadwell dtd come and speak
suro enough, but he left again with
out making the explanation which he
came to make. He found more light
here than ho brought.—Columbus
