Conscious of a correspondent depres
sion—a sinking of i mptine.-s as it is
called. The healthy action of all
members of our frame depends upon
the supply of food, received Irom tin
central foundation. Vv lien the heart’s
action is arrested, the stomach,
which requires from it a large supply
of food, becomes enfeebled. The
brain also waiting for the blood, is
inactive. The heart is a very willing
member, but if it be im.de to fetch
and carry incessantly; if it be “pul
upon,’’ as the unselfish member of
a family often is it undergoes a dis
organization which is equivalent to
rupture. And this disorganization
begins too often now days in very
young children. Parents know that
if their sons are to'snececd in any of
those competitive examinations which
have now become so exigent, high
pressure is employed. lienee young
persons nro stimulated to overwork
by reward ami punishments. The
sight of a clever boy being trained
for petition is truly a sad one.
The T pi'ceoeious, coached up chil
dren are never well. Their mental
excitement kc> ps up flush, which liki
thc excitement caused by strong
drink in older children, looks like
health but lias no relation to it; in a
word the intemperance of education
is overstraining and breaking their
young hearts. If in thr sclihoi room
some hearts are broken from mental
strain, in the playgn und nml in the
gymnasium others succumb to phys
ical strain.

Wasted Efforts to be Funny. .
Take, as a very simple illustration,
the case ol the young man who had
been offered a saucer of delicately
salted ice cream by two young ladies,
who waited in convulsive glee for the
first grimace and its attendant re
marks. N> t a gesture or a word be
trayed that hejiad noticed it at oil.
Still talking lightly of hut might's
German and to morrow’s tennis, he
finished the entire sauce, fill, then,
bowing slightly, ltl’i the room. Was
ever “fun ’ more delicately spoiled ?
Take again the case ot a certain
college professor, who bad almost
abolished practical joking on thofac-.
ulty, not by punishing, but by foil
ing, the tun of the students. Being
informed one right that the students
were painting the walls of the chap
el. “Very well,” lie said, quietly;
“let them paint; but tell mo when
they are through. 7 ’ Dreeing hasti
ly, he went about the town, rousing
every painter in the place, and as
the last student went out. of tire chap
el a dozen aitisiaus went in. Nexl
morning, when there was an actually
large attendance at prayers, behold
the ejicimined walls as fair as ever.
The dignity of Ihe college had not
been allowed to be insulted, yet nev
er a student wag ever questioned,
blamed, marked or expelled. In the
same manner, when the tongue of
the bell had been removed one
night, anotircr was in its place before

Were summoned to tire'll' dev* tions at
the usual hour. Again, when the
wheel of the organ had disappeared
and the organist had been secretly
informed that his services would not
be required the next day, ono of the
very delinquents was called upon to
lake liis place, finding, to h s cha
grin, that the keys rerponded duti
fully to his touch. If it is the “si
knt organ” that “1 >mlcst chants the
master’s lyquium,” in this case it was
certainly the organ's music that
chanted loudest the humiliation of
ttie guilty. No wonder the students
at that institution have about decided
