The subject of dividing Texas int
it hi i soparuteStates is lining diacusaun
(juilo extensively by the press of that
S'.utt', and the impressions seems to
bo gaining ground that tin measure
will bo spoeiii y cnnsiinimated. Tho
plan can ho effect ml by tho State Leg
islature ulotiftho.UnitcdSiiitrs having
in thing tit nil to do with it, for whin
Texas was annexed it win expressly
stipulated that its territory might be
divided into four Stales, whenever
tho Lcglsla'nro saw lit to do so, pro
vided that oncls now State should bo
uf convenient sizo, nmi shouli con
luin sufficient popul ition. It was spe
cially stipulated i lint when all those
conditions were fu fil'd such now
States “sh ill ba entitl al to admission
under tlio Federal Coiislitu ion.”
Tbc Austin Review is of the opinion
that tho proposed division w 11 bo el
fected at the next session of the State
Legislature, and gives as tho grounds
for its belief that tho census shows
Texas to l)o possess, and of sufficient
population and territory tojnotify the
division, and tho Democracy desires
the creation of tlie now Stut.-s for
two reasons: First, boeauso the
Democrat e party is largely in power,
and h i leading Democratic politicians
are anxious to get leading offices
which they cannot got by any other
means. Second, D mocratic politi -
cians, at homo and abroad, desire so
obtain control of the Unite 1 States
Senate for the next lour years, and
this they can do through the voles ol
the six additional United States Sen
ators which would, by tho pr .posed
t-üb-division, be secured.
As already stated, thrU utedSt ites
Government can have nothing what
ever to do with this scheme. The
mat tir lies entirely in tho control of
the Legislature, and t hat is entirely
in control of ttic Democratic party.
All th it is necessary 11 be done is for
tiie Texas Legislature to lay off th
three proposed additional States,on* b
being shown to bo possessed of suffi
cient population to be entitled to at
least one Represent it ivc in Congress.
Of coarse the next Congress w.U
be opposed to the creation of these
now States, as it woul I lose the Rad
icals control of the Senate at once,
and perhaps for nil time. Th■'Repub
lican majority will be powerless to
defeat tho measure, however, should
the people of Tex is see fit t > approve
it, and if they do, the South will not
only secure six more Senators in the
National Legislature, but her elec
toral vote will also bo incensed to
that extent. It will be seen, therefore,
that the pro nos-M plan is one in
vvnich the entire South is largely in
terested.—Savannah News.
The following story of Mr Stevens is
going the rounds of the press: Mi.
Stevens was going to Chssvillc to speak.
It was in the hoyrlav of his fame and
and popularity as a stumper. He stay
ed all nighl with an old man up in
Oassnow Bartow. lie did’nt inquire
the name of his host, nor did the host
know who the gnost was. The
next morning as he told Ins kind
entertainer good bye, the oil man toll
him that he would l>e up in- Cassvillu'
after—that he was go : ng up to hear
Stevens speak—and asked if his guest
had ever seen Mr Stephens-replied “Yes
I have seen him often, and expect to
heer him.’’Two good farmer was much
astonished when later in the day he saw
the Ittle man, but great commoner, take
the stand, lo sustain the fame of per
haps the first, ora or in the country,
This may emphatically bo styled
the age of Ingenuity. To speak
plainer—the ago in which men try
t i live by their wits anti not by their
work. Oue has only to look around
h : tn at homo, or abroad, from the
gold and silver min- s the stock and
trade coruors of wall street, to be
satisfied of the fact that labor is not
the ladder by which men sriva to rise
but conning and trickery the main
rol ance. The fields are mellow—the
forests full of fortunes—every indus
try inviting—but t<* thousands
mourn their lots in life because I Icre
is nothing to do—that is, noihing to
do without labor.—Miiledgov.il ife

The Rev. Atticus G. Tlaygood has
written a letter to the Atlanta (Jonsitu
i ion, in which lie shows up the fallacy of
the assertion that Georgia is growing
poorer, lie closes as follow: “There
are fewer ‘mansions’ on die planta
tions; there are many more sightly
and pleasant cottages onthe farms. The
people—the great mass of t be people of
Georgia—were never so well fed; so
well clothed or well housed as now. They
are increasing in substantail wealth.
What is more hnportant, tliev arc im

spirit of political and social toleration, in
