The Cost of Public Sc.;o:is.
Griffin News.
Mr. Editor—Please insert a par*
tial statement of tbs public school
system of Americus, a town with
about tbe number of inhabitants of
Griffin. It is fair to conclude that we
can run public sch lolsupon as cheap
u plan as stir neighbors;

If everybody pays, 87,000 is con¬
sumed i n education in Griffin annual
ly to school 300 children, while our
neighboring town educates nearly
800 for about i m same sum. With
the teachers in public schools sala¬
ries are paid regularly every month.
It would he indelicate to ask our
touchers how much ef their tuition
hills they lose and the trouble and
mconvonience they have with oth.
era that are paid.

A Minnc-ota fanner states that
he can keep one stove j oing during
six months with th • sunflower stalks
produced on an aero of land. The
seed produced and fed to fowls pays

burns the smaller heads with the
stalks, which are cut in the fall to
the required length.
Poisoned by a Nurse.
Some eight years ago I was inoc¬
ulated with poison by a nur.-e who
infected my babe with blood taint.—
The little child lingered along until
it was about two years old, when
its little life w as yielded up to the
fearful poison. For six long years 1
have suffered untold misery. I was
covered with sores and ulcers from
head to foot, and hi my great ex¬
tremity I prayed to die. No lan¬
guage cun express my feelings of
woe during those long six years, I
had tho host medical treatment.—
Several physicians successively
treated me, bat all to no purpose.—
The Mercury and Potash seemed to
mid fuel to tho awful flame which
was dovi uring mo. About three
months ago I was advised by friends
who hud seen wonderful cares mtde
by it to try Swift’s Specific. We
got two bottles, and 1 felt hope again
revive in my breast ; hopo for health
and happiness again. But alas ! wo
had sent so much for niedical treat¬
ment that wo were too poor to buy
it. Oh ! tho agony of that moment I
Health and happiness within your
reach, but too poor to grasp it. 1 ap¬

able and willing to help mo, and I
have taken Swift's Specific, and am

A NEW ERA.
To-day ushers in a new era in tbo
history of our government. For
twenty-four tumultuous years the ro.
publican party has been in posses¬
sion of the government, ami given
Bhape to its policy. But to-day that
party must surrender tbe reins to
the democrats, and step«lown and
out of power—forever. Mr, Clevo.
land will take the oath, and be in
ducted into tbe presidential office at
12 o’clock to-Jay. Henceforth the
government wiil bo administered
upon a new and different line of pol.
icy from that which it has been con.
ducted for tbe past 24 years.
It is with real honest pride we re ¬
cord tbo fact that tbe political party
of our choice assumes control of tbe
government to-day, after so many
long years of disappointments and
struggles to regain it. It is a matter
of much gratulation to feel that the
country is about to return to first
principles, and that a good old fash¬
ion democratic administration of tbe
government is once more vouch¬
safed us. Tbe party of destruction
corruption and centralization, has
been turned out of power by the peo
pie, and tbe party of reform, lion,
esty and economy—the party of our
choice—once more, ufu-r the laps'
of 24 > eats, a-stj n.-s the reins o
government to-day I Let us n
joice.
The report that Gen. Grant was
dying at his homo in New York,
flashed suddenly over the country
on Sunday, and created a profound
feeling of regret and unmistakable
sorrow. He is afflicted with cancer
•f the tongue and throat, almost ex¬
actly in the same way the late Sen¬
ator Hill was affected. His physi¬
cians report lie is a very sick man,
and may die at any moment, though
it is possible for him to live for weoke
or even months. IIis family are
greatly alarmed at his serious con¬
dition, and say it was precipitated
by his griol over the failure of Grant
& Ward, and by overtaxing himself
in bis labors on his war biography.
However that may be, there seem
to bo no doubt about his condition
being extremely critical.
Gen. Grant is a man of many weak,
nesses, ns viewed fr m a southern
standpoint; yet, ho will go down to
history as one of the most remark
able men of his day. His achieve
ments as a great and successful
commander, won for him ihe p ! au
ditsof his countrymen, and the ro
cognitio i of every sovereign in the
world. He has been honored in
ever) - lan I, and by evory people,
save by ihs people of the south.—
Yet, in his affliction, wo bear h m
no malice, but extend him our sin
cerest sympathy. 'Tis all we can
do.
Investigations made at Frankfort,
among the records of Kentucky,
show that a system of robbery lias
been carried on for fifteen years
past, conducted under cover of law,
and that the amount stolen will not
fall fur short of $2,090,000 A study of
the books shows that in the depart¬
ment of criminal prosecutions at
leat $1,000 000 has been stolen in 15
years. Of the fund lor keeping id¬
iots during the same time S50o,000
has been taken, while in other ex¬
penditures which have not been ex¬
amined closely there are indications
of crookedness which may add $500,
000 more to the robbery. It is bo
lleved that in most cases the money
can be trace ! to county and district
rings which have been abetted by
tbe legislature.
