THE INTEREST REDUCED.
It affords us great pleasure to stale
that our county commissioners have
•ueceeded in getting the interest on
our public debt reduced from 8 to 7
per cent, for the next year. The
largest creditors of the county Lave
agreed to I be reduction, and Ibose
who are not willing to take 7 per
cent, will be paid off as fust as their
notes fall due, as the money has been
tendered the commissioners for that
purpose. No notes will be renewed
at a higher rate of interest than 7
per cent.
We are pleased to make this an
nouncement, as we know it will be
good news to the people of our
county.
The commissioners have worked
faithfully to secure this reduction,
and have at last succeeded. They
are ontitled to the thanks of the tax
payers of Newton county, and WO
feel sure they will receive them.
This reduction in the rale of inter¬
est settles the bond question, so far
as this debt is concerned.
SENATOR COLQUITT,
The Macon Telegraph savs some
of the newspapers of our state are
trying to put Senator Colquitt into
the president's cabinet, but that the
people of Georgia will object, as they
intend to elect him to the United
States senate again in 1889.
Well, now, this is news to “the
people of Georgia.” Wonder how
the Telegraph found it out? Pos¬
sibly it wants him re-elected ; hut,
we suppose it wilrtet the people be
heard from on that question before
it stops him from taking “a seal” in
the president’s cabinet. It is at least
a little hit too previous to say the
people of Georgia intend to re-elect
him to tho United States senate in
1389. it may be possible he will be
re-elected ; but the people do not
now intend to do it. We think it
quite safe to say thero are some oth¬
er good men in our state who share
the confidence of the people equally
with Senator Colquitt, (and that is
not depreciating the popularity of
our junior senator,; and who will at
least divide honors with him in 1889.
Let us hear from the people on this
subject.
A &ove! Bet.
While I am not a betting man, said F.
to make that lellow a bet, you see he was
about dead, and I guess be would of died
before Spring, if I had not of got him on
the bet. You know some men had rath¬
er lose their life than lose a hundred,
well he was one of that kind, and we
both came near being out, but I saved
my hundred and it only cost him ten
dollars. How’s that? He sent fjr me

took the latter proposition. This was

The Duly of Parents in Sickly
Seasons of tire Year.
We commend the following testi¬
mony as to tbe efficacy S. S. S. in
measles and fever, from one of the
best known physicians practicing in
Georgia. It will be seen that be
strongly testifies to the happy res¬
ults accruing from the use of this
medicine in preventing the frequent¬
ly very serious consequences that
follow an attack of measles, The
resultant effects of an attack of
measles remain in the system for
months, and unless great care is cx
ercised the lingering poison in the
blood will attack some vital part of
tho system, endangering life. Wo
lake great pleasure in giving the
widest possible circulation to this
eminent physician’s candid and man¬
ly letter written in the cause of suf¬
fering humanity.
Ellaville, Ga., -March 31, 1887.
Gentlemen—I have used your S.
S. S. medicine with exceptional ben¬
efit on patients convalescing from
measles. A feature of that disease
is that it leaves the mucous m;m
brano chronically inflamed—that is,
the inflammation continues from four
to six moat he. J have given it to
sovoral patients just getting out of
bed from tho measles, and always
with the happiest results.
I also used S, S. S. in convalescent
fever cases with the best result. It
will, in my judgment, prevent sum
mer dysentery, if ono will take a
few' bottles in the spring, thus pre¬
paring tbe bowles for tho strains of
summer.
I am prompted to send you this
letter, becau-o just now l am aware
that measles prevail in Southwest
Georgia. While 1 hesitate to appear
as a voucher for proprietary rente
dies, S. S. S. has become such a
standard medicine with many regu¬
lar physicians, that 1 am relieved of"
tho embarrassment ordinarily at¬
tached to a regular physician’s en¬
dorsement of proprietary me Heines.
Besides, the claims of suffering hu¬
manity are greater than selfish pro¬
fessional ethics.
Yours sincerely,
J. N. Cheney, M. D.
