41 TRUCK PATCH CURRENCY.”
li The Farmers Alliance •' it.i not commit
itself to the ludicrous folly of t Livingston’s
Truck Patch Currency."
The above item is taken from the
Sparta Ishmaelite, a very pronounc¬
ed democratic journal, which is ably
eJiled by Mr. Sidney Lewi-', who is
ad ardent, and we might say, radical
tariff-reform democrat.
The Ishmaelite has, consequently,
done yeoman service in the
struggle for democratic reform in
the administration of the national
government; hut the Star cannot
regard the foregoing with any other
feeling than that of extreme surprise
and regret, and are sure our contem¬
porary will soon find it has made a
serious and grievens mistake in thus
ridiculing the efforts of the farmers
alliance to better their condition, as
well as that of tho entire country.
We do not know certainly
Editor Lewis is a member of
farmers allianco organization or not.
But we would naturally infer
he is not. Then, if he i6 not a mem
ber, his advico to the alliance
in the above item, comes too
in the r.atuie of ridicule or
criticism, to have much weight
good with that order, which is
struggling for relief from the
sion of money rings and trusts
combines and monopolies that
sail it on every hand.
If Mr. Lewis is a member of
alliance, then he cannot be in
sympathy and accord with tho
ance people in their earnest
to secure lor themselves and
country the same financial
fits and privileges from the
b iL.| orft now enjoyed by
more -‘■d .and wealthy classes
our poople.
Saroly our contemporary is
in favor of such class legislation.
Whatever privileges ate
by one class of our people,
the government, should
be extended to alt alike. This
what the allianco poople ask of
government, and is wbat they
to have.
President Livingston, of tho
Farmers Alliance, does not claim
be the originator of the measure,
plan for carrying out which is
bodied in the bill before
which provides for tho
ment of government warehouses
each county ot all the statos in
union, in which counties tho
ness transactions in tho
products of the same, amount to
sum ol $500,000 per annum. But
is only the lather of the
in the same degree as the
oi the committee from tho
state alliauces which formulated
and presented it to tho National
liance, white In suasion at St.
Col. Livingston, who represented
Georgia State Alliance, could
claim more than equal credit for
with the other slate allianco
bers of the committee.
The measure was adopted
the National Alliance, and is,
fore, the natural and legitimate
of that body.
They offer the plan, It
which is now embodied in the
before congress, as the best
could BUggesl, for the relief of
impoverished and oppressed
tural classes of the country ; but,
the wise statesmen of the land,
the national congress, can suggest
better plan, and one that will uffn,
the relief sought for by tbo alliaii
people, we are sure the latter will
cept it with the greatest pleasure.
The plan suggested by the ailiui.ee
people, and which the Ishmaelite is
pleased to term “The Livingsti n
Truck Patch Currency,” is on, sve
admit, of great magnitude, h* I wi |i
require the wisest stut i i-mn! p to
carry it into successful <>| *'•aiioti.
Still, v. good
we can see no re: • Why '
it may not be carried out - i-Gy to
the letter, and the agricahu mer-
of the country, which are the
Fa-is of all our properity, be relievtd
from great embarrassment, and even
actuariosses, by the issuance of ex¬
change bills to the extent of 80 per
cent, of the amount of the farm pre
ducts which may be deposited or
stored in the government warehous¬
es by the farmers of ibe country’.
’
Such is the case with the whisky i |
manufacturers, as well as the produ¬ !
gold and silver bullion. 1
cers of
Now, if these three classes are a!
lowed such valuable special privi
leges, why not extend the same priv
ileges to all classes of our people,
and especially to the farming classes?
Surely the Lhmaelitc does not mean
to favor eueh outrageous class legis
lation as that.
Tho ‘‘Livingston Truck Patch
Currency” is going to be the “aio
gan” of the coming campaign, at:d
wo hope Editor Lewis will get on
right side before another week pass¬
es over his head.
