Closes December 31.
CUBA WU.X, Bn FREE.
We believe it can now be consid¬
ered as a settled fact that Cuba will
be free.
The prospect for the success of
the insurgents is much brighter
than it ever was before.
The insurgent forces are stron
ger and more determined than ever
to win their independence, and we
feel safe in predicting their ultimate
success.
The last rebellion in Cuba eon
tinued for ten years, and was only
stopped by a compromise between
the leaders of the opposing armies;
but, beyond the fact that the war
was ended, it really amounted to
a defeat of both the Spanish and
the Cubans.
But the conditions are different
now, and the chances are much
better for success than they were
then.
The Cubans are much better
prepared for carrying on the war
now than they were during the
last rebellion, and have more men
and more money than they had
then
Besides these important fact- ,
the sympathies of the American
people are already aroused in
of the Cubans, and their influence
will certainly be felt by
when it convenes in December,
the shape of a movement for
recognition of the Cubans as
« * f c* Ooturress will lie
UV» wAvfi---------- A--- ----
we believe the government will
obliged to do it.
In the meantime, the
appear to be holding their
pretty well against the
and are reported to be
nearer to Havana than any
ious army has ever
that city.
We believe they are now
tled to belligerent recognition,
our congress should act
when it meets.
Our sympathies are all with
struggling Cubans, and we
but heartily wish them success.

Let Them Go To Cuba
If Jim Corbett and Fitzsimmons
really want to fight, let them go
down to Cuba and help the insur¬
gents.
They need help.
It seems the sluggers are not
likely to find a place to fight in
this country, and if they are bent
upon slugging each other, they can
find plenty of room in Cuba.
Let them go there by all means,
and knock out Campos. If they
want to do a good deed, and help
out a deserving cause, they should
go.
Remanded For Mu d:r.
Last week, in Walton county,
Green B. Austin and his son,
Henry Austin, were committed to
jail for the murder of Mr. John
Chancey, in Blassingame district.
Mr. Chancey was assassinated
at his home on Tuesday night, by
being shot through the window,
with a load of buckshot. He
died instantly.
An inquest was held over his
body at 2 o’clock Wednesday
morning, and the evidence adduced
before the coroner’s jury led to the
arrest of teh Austins, who were
Chancey’s nearest neighbors.
On Friday following the com¬
mittal trial was held before a bench
of four justices of the peace, and
the father and son were eommit
tC d to jail, charged with the mur¬
der of Chancey. ^
It is rumored that eounVA for
defendants will apply to Judge
Hutchins for bait.
