A Ground for D : tnre‘.
A Kansas City dispatch say;:
"Dr. Nannie A. Stevens , a local
physician, Thursday brought suit
for divorce from Ralph Stevens, a
well-to-do Wichita iaruier, charg
i,;g, among other things, that he
‘laid around and would not help
her get the meals.
To projic-rly understand the situ¬
ation it is necessary to I.car in
mind tiiat Dr. Nannie is a new
woman. She thinks she is just
about "emancipated." All she
lacks is the privilege of unrestrict¬
ed suffrage, and, living in Kansas
she is pretty well assured that
that great desideratum will not be
long delayed. She is a bread win¬
ner; a physician. She has taken
a man's place as the head of a
household, the inference being that
lier husband has taken the place
which she vacated. Th u neimr ”
true, the supposition is natural
that .Mr. Stevens felt it incumbent
upon himself to do the housework
and prepare the meals which I> .
Nannie provided. It does not ap¬
pear from the dispatch that Mr.
Stevens neglected his duty as long
as he was not interfered with. On
the other hand, the suggestion is
that Dr. Nannie wanted to boss
both branches of the household. It
is plain that she wished to put her
fingers into the pie, and that her
spouse kicked—that is, refused to
“help” her get the meals.
What is more natural than that
he should have kicked? Is there
the wife of a doctor—the old fash¬
ioned doctor and the old fashioned
wife—in this country who would
not object if her husband should
come in after cutting off a leg, or
mixing pills, or eliminating a ver- i
miform appendix, and insist upon
kneading the biscuits or preparing i
the pie crust ? Of course there I
isn’t. That is probably the way it
t
was with Mr. Housewife Stevens.
And it is difficult to see where any i
blame can l)e attached to him.
1’he difficulty is that the new
woman has not yet learned her I
sphere. She tries to be new, and
at the same time run all the branch
es of the establishment that she !
did when she was not new. ^ lO , !
employ a saying of the streets, she
attempts to bite off more than she I
can chew. She may learn better

May Alter Its Contract
There has been some inquiry "... as
what position the Milledgeville ... ,
to
and Hatonton railroad will take
after the reorganization of the Cen¬
tral system is completed. 1
The road is known as the Eaton
ton branch, which was one of the
leased lines of the Central, and
which, when given the right by the
court to withdraw from the Cen¬
tral, took advantage of it and en
tered into a contract with the Mid¬
dle Georgia and Atlantic. That i
contract has been renewed for au
other > v._ * on <1 according to its
present term, does not e.x r i_ until
January, 1897.
There has been some talk, how¬
ever, to the effect that this contract
would not stand until its expira¬
tion, but that some change would
lie made which would lie mutually
agreeable to the parties concerned.
Just what changes are contemplat¬
ed, however, is not known. — [Sa¬
