COVINQTON, (ia., Nov, 12, 1895
A SLANDEROUS
A Washington dispatch to the
Intcr-O<^ ow of October 31st, is a
vile slander, not only upon the
democratic party, but especially
upon the south and the old ex-con
federate soldiers.
The dispatch is signed E. B. W.,
and the author charges that
democratic party will endeavor to
SO shape affairs during the coming
winter as to make a war with
Great Britain inevitable, in order
that it may maintain itself in pow
er.
The dispatch alsofurther charges
th?' the ex-eonfederates of the
south are anxious for such a war,
in order that iutt l 1C -esiaDUsh
^.ves in the favor of the peo
pie, and secure more prominent
positions under the government.
These charges are the vilest sort
of slanders, not only upon the
democratic party, but upon the
confederate , , veterans of . the , south. , j |
The democratic party will most
certainly make an honest and man¬
ly effort to maintain its control of
the government, but it will not do
That 1.......... the M ,
England. is merest
stuflf, and no sensible person will
give credence to it.
The democratic party, however,
has the interest and honor of this
country at heart, and will always
be ready to protect and defend
them both, but will not be inspired
to do so simply for the purpose of
maintaining itself in power. The
democratic party believes in the
ei)!- meat of the Monroe doc
trine ; and, should au occasion
arise with England, or any other
Uoeion, for a resort to arms for the
maintenance of that doctrine, it
w’ill not hesitate as to its duty in
the matter.
The confederate veterans of the
south are, to a man, very strong
believers in the Monroe doctrine,
and they are ready to enforce it at
any moment by force ol arms,
whenever it is necessary to do so,
no matter whether it be against the
encroachments of Great Britain,
Spain, or any other foreign power.
These battle-scarred survivors of |
the “lost cause” ave ak read - to i
I
enforce the Monroe doctrine j
as any citizens of the j
United Slates, be they G. A. R.
men, republicans, or ex ledtral
s ddiers. But u is a slander upon
them to say they are in lavor of in
stigatiug a war with England sim¬
ply for the purpose of maintaining
the uea-.ecRitjy party in control ti
the government.
We do not know K. B. \Y., but
SUSt ct his initials were ‘pied ’
in the transmissioi of the dispatch.
At any rate, v.e are sure his infer
mation is badly mixed, especially I
'
that , „ pat. relatmg to the ex-confed
eiate soldiers. The Star un-1
derstands the sentiments of the i
coniederate veterans too well to
allow such a slander as the Wasfy-
ington dispatch to pass unnoticed j
and unrefuted, and the Inter
Ocean will not make much capit; 1
by its publication.

| There is no doubt but the
Cuban rebellion is now growing
j stronger and more formidable every I
day .
The news that comes to us from I
Havana has to pass under the
scrutiny and
Spanish officiais, and while they
claim to be gaining victories over
the insurgents every day, there is
simply no truth in their reports,
and no foundation for their claim.
Gen. Campos has a large army
of Spanish troops in Cuba; yet he
has really done nothing. He has
not fought a single important bat¬
tle, and consequently hasnotgom
ed a single victory over the insur
tViat Is worth mentioning as
a victory.
The fact is, the insurgent forces
are growing stronger every day in
numbers, equipment and efficiency,
and the longer Gen. Campos waits
before attacking them the
stronger they are becoming, and
his chances for success are like-
wise lessening.
We trust congress will recog¬
the Cubans as belligerents the
thing it does when it meets.
