THE ATLANTA EXPOSITION.
('loses December 31
IT LOOKS LIKK McKINLEY.
The McKinley boom for ])resi
dent in 1896 has been given a con
siderable “boost” by the late elec
dons, and it now appears to be a j
foregone conclusion that he will
certainly be the republican nomi
nee for president, next year.
Mr. McKinley is the embodi
ment of a high protective tariff,
and it is quite certain that the re
publicans are going to force the
in the .
tariff as an issue next presi
dential campaign.
For some time past it has been a
rather doubtful question as to who
the republicans would nominate as
their candidate for president, next
year, but the late elections seem
have settled that question beyond
a doubt for them.
And William McKinley,
Ohio, is quite sure to be the
man.
That means a return to a high
protective tariff.
The democrats will not inject
the tariff into the presidential cam
settled question; hut they may
have to meet it, if the republicans
force it, and they must be prepared
to fight it and McKinley.
The silver question will also Ire
an issue in the next campaign, and
the democrats will have to unite on
some line of agreement if they
hope to succeed.
The following letter from John
Sherman to Col. H. G. Otis, editor
of the Los Angeles Times, clearly
indicates the drift of republican
sentiment towards Gov. McKinley
as the choice of that party for
president in 1896 :
11 Senate Chamber, Washington,
November 7, 1895.
1 1 Colonel H. G. Otis:
“Your note of the 29th ult. is
received, for which please accept
my hearty thanks, The recent
elections have cleared the political
sky and I believe fairly opens the
way for the nomination of Major
McKinley, He will be heartily
supported from Ohio, and I trust
lie nominated and elected. Very
truly yours,
t t John Sherman.”

Mr. Crisp’s Great Speech.
On last Wednesday evening,
Hon. Charles F. Crisp, ex-speaker ,
of the national house of represent¬
atives, delivered an address at the
capitol, in Atlanta, before the
joint assembly of the legislature, on
the political issues of the day.
He spoke by invitation of the
general assembly, and was greeted
by a large and distinguished au
dience.
His special theme was the free
and unlimited coina s e of silver ’ al
the ratio fixed by law, that now
being 16 to I.
Hij} ch was the ablest and
clearest presentation of the silver
question ever delivered in Georgia.
He declared that anything short
of the perfect equality of the two
metals—gold and silver—at the
!
mints of the country, is not true
bimetallism.
The democratic party has always |
been in favor of bimetallism, and |
he quoted from the various otes !
on q nes tion in congress since
1873 , which showed that a very
large majority of the democratic
members had always voted for the
rehabilitation of silv er.
There can no longer be any doubt
as J uc ^£ e ^ r i s P s position on the
j silver question, as his denunciation
of the outrage of the demonetization
: of the white metal by the act of
! j 1873 , and the forcing of the single
I gold standard upon the country,
] vvas ^) ie mo st emphatic and un¬
equivocal we have heard come from
1 the lips of a public speaker.
; The Grocer’s Sone
You may talk about 20 per cent off,
And about that vacant store,
About the rush at the corner,
And the big things at the fair.
But if you want to see a good show,
And bargains that are rare,
Just go to the Lula building,
And you will find them there.
You will also find Mr. S. D. Lee
there, to show you how cheap he
sells goods. He has the sweetest
syrup, the freshest crackers, the
sourest vinegar, and the whitest
salt you ever saw. Don’t take my
word for it, but come and see for
yourself. I have with me Master
Clayton Hays, of Hayston, who
will be pleased to see his friends j
when they come to town.

“ Castoria is the bed remedy for children of
which I am netpminted. I hope the flay is i ot
far distant when mothers will consider the real
interest of their children, and use Castoria in
stead of the variousqua k nostrums which are
destroying their loved tines, by forcing opium,

agents down their throats, thereby sending
them to premature graves.”
