STATE ROAD EXTENSION.
bill I
It has been suggested that a
may be introduced in the coming
session of the legislature to extend
the state railroad from Atlanta to
,
Savannah, or some other point on
i
tlie seacoast.
has been dis .
Such a movement
cussed on several occasions
the past 1 twenty years, but it
never materialized into action.

and Brunswick road, and advocated
*
the building m of the between
gap
Atlanta and Macon, which would
have given the state a through line
from the Tennessee river, at Chat¬
tanooga, to deep water at Bruus
wick, which is the finest harbor on
the southern seacoast.
We have always contended
the foolisliest thing the Georgia
legislature ever did was to author¬
ize the sale of the Macon
Brunswick road, and hire out the
convicts of the state to private
ties for a mere song, instead of put¬
ting them to work grading the
between Atlanta and Macon,
would have connected the W. &
and M. & B., and made a
ous line from the Tennessee to
water.
Rut the Macon and Brunswick
road was sold for about the
cost of the iron rails, and the con¬
victs were hired to private parties,
who eujoyed their labor for a mere
nominal hire, and the state's inter
est made to suffer by reason of such
remarkable financiering.
Now we would like to see the
state road extended from Atlanta

Savannah, or to some other point
the seacoast. We believe it
be a fine investment for the
state, and would greatly enhance
value and importance of the W.
A. road.
We see Mr. Piromis H. Bell is
writing some letters in the DeKalb
New Era, in which lie advances
some very strong arguments in fa
vor of such extension of the state
road to tide water. He does not
advocate the employment . ^ of , the ..
for grading the road, ,
convicts
which might be done, we think,
very profitably, especially . „ 4 the , mis
demeanor cases.
Such . of ..... the state road, ,
extension
we believe, could be run so as not
hurt any of the roads now in ex
isteuce, and would help the unde

We believe the state lias the right

,
property, upon the ground that it
|
j i is necessary for its betterment in
giving it an outlet to the sea, which
j is very desirable, and would irake
the stale road much more valuable
.
than it is now.
| We hope such a bill will be in
Produced in the legislature, and
( h w 'll Itc speedily made a law.
1 We are sure it would be a great
thing for the state, and would very
j soon pay for itself in the increased
taxable values that would accrue
from the building of the road
i through a large section of the
which has no railroad now, as well
! as the increased value to the W. &
