THE ROCK PILE LAZY CURE.
Mrs. Peter Dernuth, of Alton, 111.,
r
the Alton Humane Society, super¬
intendent of the Alton Provident
Association, and probation officer
for Alton and vicinity, offers the
following excellent remedy as a
» I lazy cure » » for married men,
which we commend to the earnest
consideration of our readers.
At a recent meeting of the Illi
nots' State conference of Public
Charities, Mrs. -Dernuth made an
address4>n “The Lazy Man, and
What to Do With Him,’’ in which
she said—
“The lazy-man needs strong
medicine to cure him of his
disease. I consider the afflic
tion a disease, and I have a
remedy, which, liberally annii
_,i, x oeneve, should effect a
- f... j.i.tijcui cure in every case,
no matter how long standing
it may he.
When a married man refus¬
es to work at an ordinary occu¬
pation to support his wife and
family, he should be directed
to a handy rock pile or wood
yard, where the use of a ham¬
mer or a bucksaw should be
explained to him. The wield¬
ing of these iinpJiments, judi¬
ciously and regularly, for an in¬
definite period, would effect a
cure. The patient would then
be able to engage in some oth¬
er occupation.
But, should the patient be
unmoved at the sight of the
woodpile or the rockpile, a

Jiall s Family Pills are the best.
n diinning post in the public
square, a tough rawhide and a
muscular officer, properly con¬
nected, would make a good
prescription.
I believe the state legisla¬
ture should enact a law where¬
by men who refuse to work
should suffer for their indo¬
lence. In every city and town
there should be some place of
cases. I
woodyards operated .
ed men exclusively, T Lazy,
single men should be fined and
the proceeds put in the city
treasury, but married men
should pay a labor penalty ’ for
indolence.
This law should provide for
the payment to the lazy ’ man
of a nominal sum—say half a
dollar—for a day’s work, to be
applied to .he benefit of his
family.
As an extreme measure_a
last resort—I , would ,, revive the
whipping post of colonial days
and put it in use wl'f ” * 1
rocKpile failed to cure. The
xfo.rr' ... snotild be publicly
whipped every day he refuses
to work. In my opinion he
would soon become industri¬
ous.
Having lieen engaged in
charitable work in Alton for
eighteen years, I have reached
the conclusion that from 50 to
60 per cent, of the charity be¬
stowed is waist ed. By this I
mean that it goes to families
which, but for drunkenness
and laziness, would not need
outside help.
I hope to interest other char¬
itable workers in a state-wide
i movement to bring about leg¬
islation which will effectually
j cure this evil of laziness.
The crusade which I have
begun I trust will spread until
the whole state becomes inter
ested . , atld , the , proper medicine ...
