What is the difference between a
man and a tired dog ? One wears, a
coat and the other pan Is.
Many people are busy in the world
gntbering together a handful of
thorns to set upon.
An impassibility—to make a wo
maD own tkat her corset is too tight
for health or comfort.
As the ., sun appears , larger when ,
he is about to set, so dots the proud
man swell „ most , magriffeeutly ... just
before he Irlls. *
___, m _____
How How eon can we we look look with, with confidence confidence
to a licavcn above, when we do so
little to make a heaven below,
arqund and about us?
I don’t mean to reflect on you,’
said one man to another. ‘No,’ was
the reply, ‘you’re not polished
enough ta reflect upon anybody.’
‘-Men often jump at conclusions,”
says the proverb. So do dogs.—
One recently jumped at the conclu¬
sion of a cat, which was sticking
through the opening of a partly clos
ed door, and created ft great dis¬
turbance.
One of the triple doorways of an
Italian Cathedral there are three
inscriptions spanning tho splendid
arches. Or er one is carved a beau¬
tiful wreath of roses and under¬
neath the legend: “All that pleas¬
es is but for a moment.’’ Over the
other is a cross, and there are the
words; “All that troubles is but
for a moment” But underneath
the main aisle is the inscription;—
‘That only is important which is
eternal.”
Beware of Giving Your Note.
Did you ever make a note? If
yon never have—don’t
I suppose there has been more
trouble over notes than any other
species of financial transaction.
It’s the easiest method of raising
the wind (and the devil at the same
time) known to financiers.
Strangely enough, the people
who make notes and agree to pay,
‘three months after date,’ so much
money, never pay a cent.
They manage to get some kind
hearted and foolish individual to
stick his name on the back—and
that settles him.
Poor old Horace Greely ruined
himself by indorsing and then pay¬
ing notes.
Said the old man, ‘People are
always grumbling that they can’t
read my writing. I notice that
they manage to make it out very
well on the back of a note!’ And
they did.
Some people hate to have their
names on these promises to pay
and when placed there without
their consent, make a terrible fuss
about it.
I have just had a revelation in
the note business, however, and a
few lines in regard to my experi¬
ence may be of value to some read
er.
I had a partner; in fact I had sev¬
eral. But one partner made him¬
self a first class nuisance, so his in¬
terest was purchased.
After that young man had de<,
parted, and we were congratulating
ourselves on being rid of a scurvy
dog, wo were waited upon by a
gentleman from Jerusalem.
‘Shentlemen,’ said lie,- ‘I would
like to collect dees leetle matter to¬
day.’
He produced a note made by the
partner.
I had no idea that our name was
good for anything on Wall street,
but it seemed that this dear old
Hebrjw (his acquaintance is dear),
with the confiding spirit of his race,
had cashed a note drawn by the re¬
tiring partner, and that myself, with
others, were held for the amount.
I don’t propose to go into partic¬
ulars, but I was sued, and this is
what came of it- I think this in*
formation ought to be worth some¬
thing.
I offered to prove in court that
I had never heard of the note.
The judge declared that was “im
material and irrelevant.’
That I never had a dollar of mou
‘Immaterial and irrelevant - ’
That the fellow made it for his
personal us a.
‘Immaterial and irrelevant.’
I i fact the judge decided that it
didn’t matter wether I knew of the
cxi tense of the note or had any
of the money, or anything else; ono
partner is bound to pay all the
other fellow may put ujion him.
That’s law.
Bo 1 say, you that have partners,
l i k out for them.
You who contemplate taking
partners (except they be for life,
and of the opposite sex), don't do
it.
How Watches are Made.
It will bo apparent to any one, who
will examine a Solid Gold Watch, that
aside from the necessary thickness for
engraving and polishing, a. large propor¬
tion only of the precious metal used, engraved is need¬
ed to stiffen and hold the
portions in plaoo, aud supply the neces¬
sary solidity and strength. The sur¬
plus gold is actually needless, so far as
Utility and tSeauly are concerned. In
JAMES BOSS’ PATENT GOLD
WATCH CASES, this waste of precious
metal is overcome, and the same solidi
ty and steenoth produced at from onc
tlljrd t0 on6 ha]f of th<) usua i cost of
solid oases. This process is of the most
simply nature, as follows; a plate of
nickie composition metal, specially adapt
ed to the purpose, has two plates of
solid gold soldered one on each side.
The thres are tlleu passed the resultis between
lighed stecl aud a
strip of heavy plated composition, from
formers. The gold in these case is suffi
ciently thick to admit of all kinds of
chasing engraving and enamelling-, the
without removing the gold. MADE
THIS IS THE ONLY CASE
WITH TWO PLATES OF SOLID
GOLD. AND WAKRANTED BY SPEC¬
IAL CERTIFICATE.
