Yes, blank verse is very pathetic.
It is so lack rhyraal.
The mark of cane—dust on the
unruly school boy’s jacket.
Disappointment is but a summer
shower; adversity a steady rain.
It is believed that the world nev
cr has been crippled for life.
One shirt-maker has collared all
the police force of New York, aud
he's a small man too. ■
A man was asked the other day
how many children ho had. and he
replied, “Five boys, and each boy
has two sisters-’’
An apple threw the first man.
Since then it has sorter let the bus¬
iness out to the banana.
When you see a man take off his
hat to you it is a sign that he re¬
spects you- But when he is seen
divesting himself of his coat you
can make up your mind that he
intends you shall respect him.
At a recent Philadelphia picnic
when it was discovered that the
croquet arches had been forgotten,
a wicked girl suggested supplying
their places with two bow-legged
young men present.

“Henry, v said his wife, with a
chilling severity, “I saw you com
ing out of a saloon this afternoon.”
‘Well, my darling,’ replied the
heartless man, “yon wouldn’t have
your husband staying in a saloon
all day would you ?”
Were there any eats in the ark ?
is a question that is troubling the
religious editor of an exchange.—
Certainly there were, and the first
thing they said after leaving that
ancient craft was, “If there is Arar
at round here we want to gopher
it."

He had a son hanged, another in
the San Quentin penitentiary, and
his wife had eloped with a chromo
peddler. “Haveyou any family?”
he was asked by a fellow passenger.
“None to speak of,’’was the prompt
retort.

A good many bubbles will he prick¬
ed by the cevv census- Some ol the
far Western journals are complain¬
ing that the inquiries of Lhe enumer¬
ators have disclosed a vast amount
of exaggeration in the current es¬
timates of the population of the ci
tics. Towns like Denver, Colorado,
which were supposed to have 45,000
inhabitants, suddenly shrink, under
the relentless peucil of the census
man, to 25,000. The Denver News
is very much exercised over the dis¬
illusions, but finds consolation in re¬
flecting that the actual growth has
been wonderful, and, in fact, greater
than was to have been antieipa'ed,
while the prospect for lliefuture can
be bounded only by the imagina¬
tion.
The Congressional Committee (Re¬
publican in its majority) which in*
v.estigated the Credit Mobilier brib¬
ery of members of Congress, said in
its report of February, 1873: The
facte in regard to Mr. Garfield arc
as follows: ' Mr. Garfield agreed
with Mr. Ames to take ten shares
of Credit Mobilier stock, but did not
pay for the same. Air. Ames re¬
.
ceived the 80 per cent, dividend
bonds and sold the bonds for 07 per
—-“? cent, cash dividend, frrl which ,h ;“r together
paid the price of the stock and in¬
terest and lett a balance of three
hundred and twenty-nine dollars.
This sum .was paid over to Air. Gar¬
field by a check on Sergent at Arms
and Air. Garfield then understood
this sum was tbe balance of divi¬
dends after paying for the stock.’
There is still another charge against
Mr. Garfield. It is formulated by a
Washington correspondent of the
New York Sun as follows: “He is
directly responsible for the Sanborn
contract job, by which the merchants
of New York were openly robbed by
an infamous combination of Tivaui
ry officials, lobbyists, aud mcinl e s
of CoDgrcfS. The authority under
which that conspiiby was orgauiz d
was a ‘rider’ on the legislative ap¬
propriation bill, mounted by Mr.
Sawyer in the Senate, who atterward
shared in tbo profits. Tho House
rejected it overwhelmingly, but
through a commitloo of conference,
of which ho was Chairman, Garfield
contrived to drive tho measure
through, and (bon (o gag tho Hume
on the final report.’
