ELLIJAY, GA., MARCH 1. 1878.
We an engaged—setting type.
Alex Brans and “C 0.,” caught another
fox last Saturday.
Jtrige David Gamut is building a neat
cottage on hi* farm near town.
The weather for the past four days hat
been as fair as the belle of Gilmer eonnty.
This is tbs season of tbs year when edi
tors, with a Navy Six in each band, refuse
spring poetry.
We now have three mails a week from
Dahloaega. The females come from an*
■torn direction.
Hearty all the Eilijay boys bare bows
and arrows. Several of the young ladies
in this Acidity Otave beaux, too.
The old academy in which Hon. H. P.
Bell, our Congressman, taught school in
when he wee a young man is mill standing
in Eilijay.
Them was a hop at the residence of Maj.
Gaa Smith’*, three miles from town,on the
91st nit. It waaoßeof tbs most enjoyable
affairs of the staaan.
Plot HutseU, who has ben confined to
his bed force viral days, is rapidly improv
ing. For the present the school is con
ducted by Mrs. HutseU.
John Perry went over to Spring Place
last Hobday .and fell in love with a girl.
From the looks of John’s pants we think
he fell ip a mud bole, also.
Last Wednesday was a happy day for
the people of the lawyers were
all out of town, and only two doctors were
here-.-o*e of them was sick and the other
sbogid hare Icon.
The iron rods that were run through the
Court bouse to protect the walls are also
used by the toys to “skin the cat” on.
Dm little chap came very near skinning his
head a few days ago.
Her. l, W. tJailUir., pastor of tbc M.
E. church South at this place, has changed
hit appointment to the fourth Saturday
and Sunday in each month Instead of the
third, ns jhorctufore.
Wilburn Tankeslqy levied on a blind
borne last Tuesday, and the borse “leveled”
on Wilburn. There were two licks struck
—the hone’s right hind foot struck Wil
hw*. and Wilburn struck the ground,
Screak of our cltixens think that Gilmer
county ebon Id give seme expression to her
views on tbe money question. Our views
are that *re would like to “view” * Uttla
money in order not to forget how it locks.
A tang, gauky-looking individual, with
his under lip banging down like a tar •bask
et on a peddler's wagon, came in tbia office
lafit fifetsday, and seeing our printing offiae
befcwrrs wanted to know “whar we got
that fiber banjo fruiu. ”
Dr. C. Ptefcett and family, who have
been spending several days with relatives
and friends in this county, returned to their
home in Clayton, Rabun county, last Mou
r&sjr. Their many friends here regretted
that #init was so short, and hope to
tee tfcWjjgaia t.u early day.
The Russian £owt invited Dr. Ayer and
his family to the Archduke’s wedding in
the Royal Palace. This distinction was
awarded him,not only because he was an
AmtsKCtpt, but also because his name as a
ybytwjinr i rt' hccouaa favorably known in
JiHiwm around the world.

prove the guardiau angel of society.moral

more of them, but as we cannot have them
at every home, consolidate yeas strength
and unify your purposes, and the good re

LUDVILLE LOCALS.
REPORTED BY MOULIN.
I noticed your article in local column
“owr Fannin and Pickens county corres
pondents short of Items, or tardy.” The
fact is, our malls are alto tardy.
Our people are busy preparing their land
for the next crop.
We have changeable, inclement weather,
which causes considerable sickness, princi
pally bad colds. There have been two
deOhenear Ludrflle recently—Mrs. Elizas
beth Jolmson, consort of David D. John
son and daughter of Bithai Bradley. She
was a faithful member of the Baptist
church, and died la a full hope. Her dis
ease was consumption. Joseph Tolber*
died at Ludville of a wound received In the
late war while battling for the “Lost
Cause.” an honoted member of
the ML K. church South, and leaves a wife
and five children. May the Lord prosper
them. Since writing the above Mr. James
A. Stevens, ana of the meet prominent cit
izens of Talking Rock, died suddenly,
which warns ns that the sickle of death
cats us down when we least expect It.
He leaves n wife and daughter, at borne,
the rest being married, aad I think they
meal) provided with a sufficiency of this
world’s comforts.
Tim school la fib* Ludville Academy
this session is the be* we have ever Lad, I
think. It is but due, and I will say in be
half of Prof. Vincent that notwithstand-
ing he was defeated as a candidate for the
next General Assembly, be never Inst sight
of our Ludville institution, but bas estab
lished it on a firmer basis than ever before.
He is a bachelor forlorn, and the young
lady who may succeed in hanging him up
will have conferred a Sciiptural blessing to
dying humanity. Prof. Steed having tra
versed the bridge of conjugality is like the
rest of ua—“in for it”—and needs no com
ments in that line. He is st borne in the
school room, and a good judge pf wood—
*“birch. ’
Our debating society is well greased and
in fine running order. It is managed by a
corps of undaunted young men, who
acknowledge no superiors in debate. They
lately settled tbat vexed question as to
whether Secessh n was Constitutional or
uot by deciding in the affirmative. We
all fuel eased In mind on that subject since
the decision.
In amusements croquet seems to take
thele*d with us, quoits holding “edge.”
We need a Mayor aod Town Council in
Ludville. The place seemt to spread, not
withstanding the panic predicted on the
resumption act, six or seven new houses
having been erected here this winter.
Lndville affords a fine opening for pro
fessional men pud mechanics, not withstand
ing real estate is quoted above par.
That primitive habit, formerly so much
Indulged in hire, of Harrying too young, is
a thing of the past, jndging, especially,
Asm the facet of our male students, for
mqst of them are bleseed with an abund
ance of nature’s protection to cover the
face these cold days. Some few eccentrics,
as in ail crowds, are satisfied with a mus
tache; then again you will see one turn h ■
out ala Burnside. You may safely bet be
has pulled at the gander’s neck or sung the
snake song m a moonshine nig!it.
Our Justine Courts are in full Mast; lit
igation seems to be the order of the day.
Everybody atvyn to want their rights under
the new Constitution, where they are not
guilty, and it keeps our Chief of the Jus
tice Court busy to prevent hie wool from
being tangled by litigation. In other worda
His Honor, the Chief Jwtice, is compelled
to keep posted with the Supreme Court de
cisions in order “to me it one better.”
The United States Court stalls us. We
were "*"“■• Use impression that Fitzismor.s
would atop the howling in Georgia, but we
have had mere asrcsU around hoe since be
ascended the condemned throne than ever
before, but such is fate. And after all
Uncle Sam mu* hsto the national debt
settled in some way, if it takes five dollars
of expenses to settle one.
I hear a great deal of ebat about resump
tion between the gold nod silvfif mtn. The
feature >wm to have changed—the antag
onism was formerly between the bard and
soft money men, and I hope that after our
public men will have given vent to all their
gleanings of slander again* each other
that the multitude at large wilt be blessed
with a compromise on silver, and make the
aristocracy, as well us the poor, burdened
tax-payer, help caggy the load. Then
everybody will be interested in the same
direction, and to use the okl expression, “s
heap of bands will make light work.” But
as long as it is iu its present shape the gold
sharks wilt be like Josh Billings with bis
boil in tlie right piscc; thnt is, when he
could have it oa his neighbor.
