We were exposed last week to a pitiless
Storm, that wet our feet and stockings, and
indeed our person all over In fact, we
took a cracking cold, which brought sore
threat and severe symptoms of fever. The
good wife asserted her authority, plunged

hot blankets, and sent our faithful sop for
a bottle of Ayer’s Cbetiy Pectoral. It is,
splendid medicine—pleasant to take, and
did the job. We slept soundly through

Tb* Atlanta annaap—d—t of tor Angus
te Evening Mews has this to sag of Col
Pmuk L. Haralson, who is well known In
this SKtkmt
il will be r—itehuiiii that on the even
tag of tha fid <tf Nor. 1817, a murder took
place on the public highway, four mile*
hum Zefanloa, hi Pike comity, no the road
leading to Bunaavilta. Mr. Powell P.
Ballard was on his way te Ma home above
Zebu lon, going hum BaramvUie, wnere be
bad sold some cotton, when be was mur
dered in his wagon by being shot in the
back of the bead. The affair created con
siderable £umtioo all over the State. Sev
eral parties were arrested, charged with
the murder; among others were Jeff
Childs and Ed Dumas, upon the grounds
that they were seen In town the evening
previous. Jeff Childs was first to be tried
for the murder, ami he was ceuvicted and
sentenced to the penitentiary for life. Mr
Prank Haralson, of Atlanta, took the case
of Ed Dumas in charge and conducted it
with consummate legal ability and acumen
Nevertheless, Dumas found guilty and sen
tensed to be hung last July. Not falter
ing, however, Mr. Haralson worked assid
uously in behalf of his doomed client, and
bad the ease carried to the supreme court,
where he had a hearing about three weeks
ago. It is said by tboae who heard Mr.
Haralson that he presented the ease in a
clearer light, made a better argument and
a finer speech than is possible for many of
the older aad more experienced lawyers to
make. The case waa held np until late
Tuesday, when a decision waa rendered in
favor of Mr. Haralson’s cl lent,
hint s new trial. This is a brilliant
achievement for Mr. Haralson, still a suc
cess worthy*of him and his efforts, for no
t one attends to a case more closely or looks
to every point more carefully than he does
and he is certainly one of the coming crim
inal lawyers #f the State. If Mr. Haral
son needed any endorsement as a criminal
lawyer, this case affords it.
