We take pleasure in announcing to our
readers that active steps are at last being
taken to mike a full display of the res
sources of North Georgia in the Cotton
Exposition to he held at Atlanta, October
sth, 1881. Mr. H. B. Lee, the Exposi
tion Agent of the W. A A. R. R., has
just completed his trip through this sec
tion for the purpose of appointing bis
agents to collect specimens of Mineral,
Budding Stone, Slate, Olay aud Timber.
He informs us that the W. &A. R. R.
has secured 1000 feet of space in the Ex
position building to make this exhibit and
agents are actively at work collecting
specimens. Mr. William Ellington has
received the appointment for Gilmer and
Fannin and S. C. Tate, for Pickens. All
parties Interested should put themselves in
communication with these gentlemen.
Our readers will at once see the impor
tance of co-operating with these gentle
men, as the opportunity for a grand ad
vertisement of our section is too good to
be lost. We say to one and all, take hold
and see that yottr county docs Hot fall be
hind the rest.
Bill Ray killed a rattle snake the Other
lay on Lock Langley’s plantation that
measured four feet in length, was large ill
proportion to length, and had 16 rattles.
Rev. J. J. Harris was the owner, last
week, of the laigcßt tomato we have ever i
heard of, ths weight having been 28 ox.
It was large enough for all those around
ths table to cut from the portion of the
berry nearest them, and after all had eaten
some was left.
We direct especial attention to the ad
vertisement of Wm Haig & Cos., Dalton,
Ga. This is a branch house of Phillips &
Crew, Atlanta, Ga., which is one of the
strongest and most reliable firms in Geor
gia. Mr. Haig, senior of the Dalton
house, is a gentleman of thorough experts
ence, courteous, piompt and liberal in all
his dealings and we kllow he ean and will
please bis customers. Read his advertise
ments nnd call on or write to him for what
you want In Ills line.
From the Chattanooga Times we learn
that Henry Lawßmi has been convicted of
ravishing Miss Nancy Donaldson on the
4th of July last, aud has been sentenced
tiy Judge IreWh tt, to be hanged oil Fri
day, September 2d. at Olmtt mooga. This
imp of the devil attempted a like crime of
which lie lias been found guilty on a
daughter of a gentleman yarned Dillard,
oueof the most prominent farmers in Mur
ray county, Ga., live years ago. He was
in the act of seizing her from behind, in
the same manner that lie seized Miss Don
aldson, when she fortunately saw him and
fled at the top of her speed, screaming
loudly. This frightened the brute and he
desisted. A lllol) was organized to hang
him, but he beard of it and fled the coUn
try, going thence to Chattanooga.
To All Whom It May Concern:
Ellijay, Ga., Aug. 9th, 1881.
I have this day appointed Mr. Win. El
lington my agent iu the counties of Gil
mer and Fanuiu for the purpose of col
lecting specimens of all varieties of min
eral, stone, clay, timber, to he found iu
the above mentioned Counties, and have
agreed, on the part of the Western & At
lantic Railroad Cos. to compensate him for
his trouble according to the contract sign
ed by him. I would respectfully request
nil the citizens of the above counties to
give him all the assistance they can, as the
object for which he is working will be the
best advertisement of the resources of
this section that they can possibly get, be
ing, in reality, a three months free exhi
bition, 11. B. Lee,
Ag’t. W. & A. R. R.
To thk Pbopi.e of Gilmer and Fannin
Counties.
It will be seen by the notice given by
Mr. Lee that I hare undertaken the task of
collecting specimens of mineral and tim -
bers for the exposition in Atlanta this fall.
In this work I respectfully ask and shall
expect the hearty co-opsratiou and assist'
ance of a!l citizens. It is clear to every
one that tills is no scheme of speculation
on the part of any one—the only object
being to advertise to the world the natural
resources of this country, a matter in
wbicli every one has a direct interest, and
which may result in great good in the fu
ture development of the country. Such
opportunities for advertising our resources
are rarely offered any people, and let no
one underestimate its advantages, but
seize the golden opportunity and make the
best of it for ourselves.
It is desirable in all cases of mineral
specimens to give the exact locality, name
of owner, Ac. In some instances parties
may not wish to do this, but it is hoped
that in such cases the specimens will be
furnished with name of the party know
ing of its locality. Parties having valua
ble specimens witb which they do not wish
to part, are asked to loan and allow the
use of them during the Exposition. I
will receipt them for the same and return
them at the expiration of the time.
Respectfully,
Wm. Ellington.
Gold Excitement.
The Eastern portion of the county is in
almost a fever of excitement over the dis
covery, on the plantation of Spencer Bur
rell, of a deposit of gold bearing quartz
which, it is said, surpasses in richness any.
thing ever discovered ia tbe omiaty. Tbe
ore vela was found by Bluford Real dm
sad Bob Kincaid at tbs head of a branch
East and just beyond Mr. Burrell’s bouse.
For a long time it bos been thought there
was a rich deposit of gold in that neigh
borhood and large premiums lave been
offered to any one who would discover tbe
vein. Tbe gentlemen shove named liaving
discovered tbe mine alluded to thereby be
come largely interested in it. Col. G. W.
Heath has also bought a third interest and
we learn all you have to do it to squeeze
the goose snd she lays the golden egg.
Rumor says the owners of this miue have
been offered large sums of money for it,
but they will not entertain sny proposi
tion for selling. Hurrah for Cartccay!
She will yet take the lead as the mineral
section of North Georgia.

whose advertisement appears elsewhere,
is selling Pianos direct to the people at
Factory Prices, without the interventiou
of agents or dealers, thereby saving
them more than one-half the prices usu

Tbe leading papers oi the country speak
in the very highest terms of the Compa
ny and their Pianos, as will be seen In the
following extracts selected from their
Catalogue:
The Mendelssohn Piano impressed u
greatly, flrst by its power, and second by
its rare beauty of tone. It is brilliant
without being thin, and powerful without
noise. Tile treble Is bright and pure, the
middle range warm and sympathetic, and
the bass decided and sonorous, while the
touch is Watson’s Art Jour
nal, New York.
One of the Square Huttos, (Mathushek’s
Scale) exhibited by the Mendelssohn Pi
ano Cos. is constructed Upon entirely
new principles, and is said to be themnst
powerful toned square piano In the World
with a singing quality rarely, if ever, be
fore obtained in any Piano.—Chicago
Times.
For a number of years the Mendel
ssohn Piano Cos, have aimed at the pro
duction ol a splendid piano at a low
price. They have more than succeeded.
Modern mechanism, skill and genius can
not produce a better piano, while the
price is below th it of any first-class
make.—Louisville Courier-Journal.
The revolution in the American Piano
trade has begun tihder the leadership of
the Mendelssohn l’lliho Cos. of New York.
That revolution means—lower prices for
instruments eqtlal in material, construc
tion amt elegance to the best yet pro
duced.—St. Louis Republican.
We notice that the Mendelssohn Piano
Cos., of New York, have taken tbe field
against hignpric.es. IT lie matchless per
fection of the Mendelssohn Piano dis
arms criticism.—Cleveland Herald.
Tbe culture and exacting musical taste
of Cincinnati gives the Meinlelssohn a
rank second to no piano-forte ; and their
sale is {rapidly increasing. They are
splendid instruments, and the wonder is
how they can be sold at so low a price.—
Cincinnati Gazette.
We would recommend any of our read
ers who have any idea ol ever buying a
piano, not to fail to write at once for
their Illustrated and Descriptive Cata
logue, Which will be mailed free.
