Heroeß of the Plains.
In American History there are ao more
interesting figures than the Heroes of the
border. Bold, dashing, adventurous and
patriotic ; loyal to friends, to country and
to the interests ef society, their work was
singularly effective iu the advancement of
Western civilization. With seeming reck

of law aad eraer, and the people owe
them a det-t of gratitude they do not for

Capt. Jack and others whose i-chieve

famous. They have a warm pi woe in the
hearts of the people, and a prominent one

Tin Sweat Potato.
Rnmnt OoDmam—Thsto mgr wet to
very many erroneous ideas about to cul
ture of (Me above named plaat, hat we do
believe that it to, to a very great extent,
neglected on account of not knowing bow
to cultivate it, and keep the potato through
the winter season after it is made.
To keep potatoes sound and gsod through
the entire winter requires good manage
ment only. In the first place let the frost
kill your vines, but dig them as soon as
you can after they are bitten by the frost,
for in so doing you prevent the poisonous
aap from running into the potato, which
will cause it to rot more or less every sea
son, if allowed to have its course.
docs not make any difference how wet the
ground is when you dig, do out leave your
potatoes out in the sun to dry, for it does
barm instead of good.
To hill up your potatoes tori throw up
jour bed about one foot high, then cover
the bed one or two inches thick with 1
broom-wedge, pile up your pstatsea upon
it, and owner them in like manner. After
this cover with something to keep the dirt
from failing hi as you take out the pota
toes then cover wi'li soil and day about
six inches deep. Do not leave say air
hole ; the sedge will al-eorb all the mois
ture, and keep everything dry. Potatoes
put up iu this manner never rot. W. L.
