Kingston, Ga., Sept 19th, 1881.
1 here is quite a revival of religion going
bn here conducted by Rev. G. S. Tumlin,
of Carlersviile, and Rev. Tutber, of Dal
tnn. There was quite a number baptized
to-day.
Cotton is the prevailing mania now. It
is supposed that most of it will be picked
iu three weeks Alas for tbe poor darkies
whose dependence is cotton picking for
their winter clothes and piovisioas. They
will be compelled to suffer in consequence
of short crops.
Our little village looks cheerful—our
merchants have had a good fall trade so
far, and if it was not for the expected ]
momentary arrival of the sad aud sorrow- j
ful intelligence ot our President’s death,
our citizsps weuid be jubilant despite oth
er failures.
'I here are a good many down country
people visiting our town who seem to en
joy pur up ccuutry “breeze” very much
it we may judge from the buggies and
carriages we see out 01 evenings; but in
my opinion there is uo place can equal
Gilmer county for pure air and good wa
ter, and especially the little village of Et
lijav. I heartily recommend all travellers
for health to visit that beautiful mouuvtia
village, end enjoy the grandest scenery,
the good society and the kind hospitality
of her mountain people ; and if they will
encourage visitors by preparing good ac
commodations I think it will, iu a few
years, be among the most favorite resorts
in Georgia.
This morning our little village was
throw u into consternation by the intelli
gence of tbe death of Dr. I. N. Vanme
ter, one of our most wotthy citizens. Just
before daylight, this morning he arose from
his bed and as be started out of Ins 100 m
(as was supposed to get some water,) he
asked his wife if she was asleep. She re
plied, no, aud thought no more about it |
but, a he did not return she became
a armed and went out to look for birn.
Not finding him, She aroused the hands
and other inmates and went ia search of
him. After Searching all the grounds and
adjoining woods they noticed tbe well in
the lot was open and found footprints
around it. They immediately began to
fish into the water and fouud the unfortu
nate Dr. at its depths, the well being
something over a hundred ieet deep.
When drawn up his forehead was very
much bruised aud crushed. It is sup
posed he had met with violence and
thrown into the well to cover the crime.
Dr. Vanmeter was a gentleman of rare
intelligence and noble qualities and was
very highly esteemed by his friends and
neighbors. His farm is about 6 miles
from this place. He leaves a young bride
to mourn his loss. The inquest will be
held to-morrow,
On Saturday last Judge Foster, of tbs

liberately laid himself on a bed aud took a
pistol and blew his brains out. Financial
trouble caused th* sad occurrence.

fort Mountain,
Mb. Editob.— 1 promised to give you
an account of my trip to Fort Mountain,
Murray county. * Ouv party consisted of a
young lady, a little girl 9 years old, their
father, a young man, a man with a gim,
and your correspondent—six in all. I
forgot to say we had two dogs, We com*
uieuced the ascent of tbe mountain on the
West side at aun up. We toiled hard and
Continuously until 10 o’clock (except a
Short time spent in shooting at some
squirrels.) Just at ten we got to the top
and saw, lor the first time for that day,
the sun. The ascent from this side is dif
ficult indeed and the scene picturesque.
The rock oa this side forms a natural for
tification. Bluff after bluff cf rock rise,
one on top of the other, in some places 50
feet high, almost perpendicular. Upon
this natural fortification time has com*
milted fearful ravages. Hard freenes and
washing rains have undermined the fortifi
cation in many places and it has tumbled,
and then the artillery of nearen for B.x
thousand years las darted its electric bolts
against its rock boumi sides. Just about
half way up the mountain stands one
rock rearing its head sonic 30 feet in the
air. The mass of rock win weigh, prob
ably, one hundred tons, and its base is not
mere than four feet one way and two the
other. I think the next weil directed shot
from the battery of heaven will turn loose
this 100 toaa of rock and it will go ciush
ing down to the place where the debris
from this fort have been collecting for six
thousand years. I don’t know what the
Master is blasting out this rock for. It is
filled up at the base of the mountain,
rocks on top of rocks, until it is, perhaps,
50 feet deep ia places—enough rock to
build the walls for a city as large as Bab
ylon, or to build house* for all the people
who inhabit the beautiful valley below
and fence ail their lands, and still he is
blasting out more rock. When we got to
the top we heard the uogs howling away
down the side of tbe mountain. We had
clambered over Cliffs that the dogs could
not climb. At one place your corfespon
oent run his stick down into a creyas of
the rock, supported himself by the stick,
climbed around above tbe stick, slipped
and fell, eiidea around below the stick and
hung for some time with nothing to sup
port him but the stick. It the stick had
broken he would have gone some 50 feet.
At another poml wc had to climb a long
ledge of rock about 10 inches wide. 'I lie
father of the 9 year old girl got a pole for
her to hold to. the said, “get out ot the
j way. pa,” and she passed that fearful
place at a brisk run. If she had slipped
i -he would have fallen some 150 feet. The
i fort proper on top of the mountain en
j closes some ten or fifteen acies extending
I annual the E-t and North aide of the top
1 and joining the natural fort on the Went
and Booth sUe. Ihe tort baa been built
of rough stones gat lined on tbe meua
tain. 1 think artillery baa been need at
I two places. Tliere are emWaMres of
| opening* at two point* which look like
they were built for artillery—one to guard
tbe spring, the other to cover a Hat ridge
which i the only easy approach to tbe
fort.
When was this fort built t About bait
of it was built when tbe foundations of
the earth were built—about the time tbe
morning stars sung together—by the Mas'
ter builder. The artificial part was built
'■ when aud by whom f Let u guess : I
guess in 1,500 by DeSoto.
We retraced our steps, got to the foot
of the mountain about sundown footsore
' and huugry. .Spent a Restless night,
j (beamed of climbing over cliffs and fall
! ing and would clutch the bed cloth** and
| wake up. Got up sore next morning but
j uevr have regretted my trip to Fort
Mouutain. H.

Editor Cocbikh,— Bitter and sweet may

Five days ago farmers here were smiling
aud jubiiaiu us copious rains, for the first
time since Spring, saturated the dusty,
thirsty soil ; nut alas ! through continued
showers, probably 100,000 binds of fodder
is almost worthless. Every wise farmer
knows that the increased scarcity of prov
ender must be supplemented in sour* way.
Sow rye plentifully lor winter and early
spring grazing. Especially, in view of
such a hard year) don’t target to utilize
tbe abundant feed now growing and to be
had with a little labor. Take scythes and
mow down as much rag weed hay aa pos
sible. It grows plentiful on any wh*at
field and is as good feed for cattle ns corn
shucks. Also, with sickles, a vast amount
of crab-grass can be procured from some
corn fields I know we have many im |
provident farmers, but this section cai J
winter itß dve stock. Save all rye aim *

less. Cut it fine, put it into a box, mote •

Cure Yourselves.
The Bth Wonder of the World has been
found in Georgia. The discoverer is a
physician of long experience, extensive
observation and profound judgment, and
his discovery lias proven such a blessing
to woman, that it ts already known as
“Woman’s Best Friend.” With remark
able quickness and certainty it cures all
cases of suppressed nlehstiuation, acute
or chronic, and restores health in every
instance. Dr. J. Bradficid's Female Reg

the treatment of diseases peculiar to wo
man. This the Medical Faculty know
and admit, while many of our best physi -
