The early days of quartr. aiaiog in
California were marked with repeated
failures. Ignorance of the correct
methods of mining and milling theauri
ferotis i|uartz rock ruined hundreds of en
terprising men who first imbarked in
that enterprise. The same was also true
of capitalists who also attempted it.
lack of experience and the high price of
labor and material were decidedly
against that kind of gold mining. For
several years a paying quartz claim was
a novelty, while abandoned shafts and
decaying quartz mills were conspicuous
from one extreme of the miueral belt to
the other.
It was in the midst of just such dis
couragements that Alvirza Hayward
commenced his caresr. For a tong time
no success crowned his efforts. After
months of incessant toil, ail he had to
ehow for so great an outlay wete two or
three shafts sunk a hundred or more feet
into the adamantine rock. His money
was all gone, but his stock of faith in
the enterprise remained intact. He still
coDtinuea on with the work, his men
having implicit confidence in both his
honor and ability. Hut there came a
time when it seemed that the work must
atop. His creditors all along had
been both lenient and lilicralqp But
there must be a limit some time to
credit. They could favor him no
more, not even to the extent of a sing e
sack of flour. Even this did not dis
courage the brave man. A ride of two
hours brought him to the soat ol an ad
joining county. It was a prospciMtu
town. In it were several well to do mer
chants. One of these was a Yankee we
may call Stevens. The quartz-miner
sought him out, and with candid earnest
ness told him of his troubles. He stated
to the merchant that every dollar he
bad in the world was invested in his
quartz mines. Further than that, all |
the money he could borrow front his
friends was there too. Nor was that nil;
he owed his laborers considerable suin'*,
and the merchants of the vicinity so
much that they refused to longer credit
him. eveu for a single dollar’s worth of
goods. ‘‘Now,’’ continued he, “I have
given you a plain, truthful statement of
my affairs. I am almost certain of a rich
mine eventually. Can you, or will you,
under the circumstances credit nte with
a bill of goods! If the mine pays me,
you will soon get your money. If it
does not, some time in the future I shall
meet with success and will not forgot tl e
obligation.”
“How much do you want?” coolly
asked the merchant.
“Three hundred dollars’ worth of
assorted goods, mostly provisions,” was
the answer.
“You can have them,” said Stevens,
unhesitatingly; “make out your list.”
The goods were shipped forthwith.
Not long afterward tho newspapers of
the vicinity teemed with accounts of a
rich strike in quartz in the Sutter Creek
sect ion, and an obscure quart/, miner sud
denly rose to a position of wealth and
distinction, which lie has ever since re
tained. Tho mines had been opened in
a scientific manner; the lead Droved to
be a true fissure voin between wcli-de
tined walls, with the rich metal evenly
distributed through all the rock, condi
tions very desirable, as alt oxpert minors
well know. The income from it was a
permanent one, tho owner become im
mensely rich, and the community a very
prosperous one for long years afterward.
It is needless, porhaps, to state that tho
fortunate iniuerdid not, in hiswondcrf.il
prosperity, forget his merchant friend of
tiio adjoining county, neither any others.
Years passed rapidly away, and all
these circumstances grew dim in the
recollections of those once conversant
with them, and but for a freak of fickle |
fortune would, like thousands of others,
have gone iuto oblivion. Tho lucky ini
"er plodded along until his wealth mado
him world-renowned; and yet, tho igh
several times a millionaire, he never bj
vone haughty or sordid. The rner- I
chant’s luck also changed as years went
on. but only “from bad to worse.” Fire*,
bad debts, and a rapid decadence of local
resources eventually brought him almost
to the verge of jienury. Gathering to
gether the little ho had left, he set out to
visit the land of his birth. At tho Bav
< ity he purchased a steamer ticket and
patiently awaited the day of departure. ;
W Hiking the streets one day. he acci- i
dently mot the millionaire miner, ti n 1
just returned from a long journey abro nl.
ihe surprise was a pleasant ono to each, i
After a long haml-shaking the miner |
exclaimed: “Well. Stevens, 1 am really j
glad to meet you. How long it has
been since we have met. How are you, !
am l how has the world used you?” |
“Well as to health, poorly other- ;
wise," quickly and cheerfully replied
Stevens. I have a few hundred dollars 1
left, and ouly a few, after paying my i
fare east, where 1 am soon going to visit :
the few relatives that \ct live."
“Possible!” exclaimed the kind
hearted millionaire; “only a few hun- j
dred dollars left after all these strug
gling yearsf It is too bad; come with
me and let us have a talk of the by-gone
days.” His otlice was but a block or i
two distant.
Ouce seated there, an hour flew swiftly
by as they reviewed the pst and
recalled the stirring times of old. At
last as Steveus arose to say good-by. his
friend exclaimed. “Stop one moment j
more;” and turning to his desk quickly
peuned a name, then signed another,
tore the leaf from the book and handed
it. to him, meditatively saying, “Only a
few hundred dollars left. Take that;
it s but a trifle; 1 .-hall not miss it. and j
it may help you when the ‘few hundred
do lars left' are gone.” Tears did run
down the furrowed cheeks of the pioneer
merchant as he took the gift. ’Twas
gratitude that made them .'low. The
check read thus: "Pay tothe bearer—S—

A forcible illustration of the weight
of the atmosphere was recently given
by a lecturer in London, who said that
the air, which scarcely appears to be
matter at all, is so enormous in mass
that it really presses with nearly a ton

of all the buildings in the world’s

that of the air above them.
The origin of the two old names of
Cavalier and ltoundhend so prominent
in English history, is not more curious
than that of the more modern names
of Whigs and Tories. The Cavaliers
got their name from their habit of be
ing almost constantly on horseback,
and tbe Houndheads from the clus i
cut of their hair. In 1660 CaValiets

for a robber, qnd the lloundhoads got

Amazons in the Hebrides.
According to a report from the Heb
rides, nearly the whole male popula
tion of Lewes, being absent from home
at the herring fishing on the east coast,
the Uig tacksmen arranged to take
repossession of the islands which the
crofters maintain to be theirs. Ac
cordingly, there was a general gather
ing of tacksmen, grountl officers, g'llies
and shepherds from the surrounding
district for this purpose. The croft
ers’ wives and daughters, having been
made aware of the invasion, determin
ed to resist the invaders at all hazards,
both on sea and land. A large fleet of
sailing boats was accordingly got
ready, and when the tacksmen hove in
sight the women were ready for ac
tion, each being armed with a stout
stick and alapful of stones. A light
commenced about a mile from land
which lasted for fully four hours, and
after .a hot anil well-contested battle
the women came off victorious. They
drove the tacksmen off. preventing
them from landing their sheep, and
only five head of cattle were
disembarked out of several score.
The women then determined to
keep sentry on the islands until
the return of the men from
the fishings. Several of the women
were injured, though not seriously
