WHISKEY A T THE POLLS.
We understand from various

Of the report we do not propose to
Vouch, that through the organized
efforts of some whiskey men, on
the day of the election whiskey
be furnished free to make men
drunk and vole them for the wet
side, whether or not they are so
disposed when sober. Now, this,
if truer serems that (he whiskey

fair and unbiased expression of
opinion by the citizens of Gilmer
county on the prohibition ques
tion, but they seek to thwart a
free ball'ot and a fair coufft, and
on this account they resort to un-
scrupulous, unfair and unlawful
ftieana to carry the election over
the honest tote of our citisene.
AH we hate to say is that
the friends of prohibition vyill all
be on the alert and any such at
tempt will be speedily delected
ou that day. We would remind
onr whisky friends that such con
duct is provided for by the stat
utes of Georgia and that the next
grand jury will give the matter a
full investigation. Such
handed violations of law will meet
with universal condemnation, and
the good citizens ot the county
propose to see that fair measures
shall be used, or know the reason
why. We hope no such unlawful
act will be attempted, but if so,
it will not be done with impunity.
OUR MOTIVES.
The friends of prohibition have
labored for its success, not because
they had any hope of pecuniary
remuneration or financial reward
in any wav, but because they
think it is best for our couuty fi
nancially, morally, and from a
Standpoint of human happiness.
We have entertained no vestige
of hope lor gain save only in the
general advancement of the
try at large. On the oilier hand
it has been at an expense of time,
labor and money to conduct the
campaign as we have,and nothing
save the wel/are of the people o!

Now, fellow-tiny ns, are yen

you made up your minds to role

times? These questions we ask
Vou, and they must be answered
by your ballots on the 10th day
of August.- Next Tuesday night
will find us a happier people, or
a people under taxation and mis
ery. Consult your manhood,your
country, and your family, ami we
are satisfied you will vote aright.
This is tbs last issue of the Gou
3(ikr before the election; and next
week will appear the official vote
of tbe county, either for or against
the sale. We have done what we
have, honestly, and with the hope
that the pooler classes of our cit
izens would be benefited by the
change. Let tbe friends of pro

my friends and contemplate the
effects of whiskey in the amount

the number who have been kill

Why did George Osborn kill Ins

Bill Kitnsev lose two sober, quiet

another person. Wliat caused

amount ol crime and yielched

be told.
Now I appeal most especially
lo the members of my church, as
the leading denomination in
Ueorgia which is doing all in its
power to rid our Elate of the
whiskey curse, to aid us in our
efforts to Success. As you are
all aware the Baptist church all
over our Stale is a prohibition
church, and has done much to rid
many counties of whiskey. The
Slate Baptist Association has
taken high grounds on the prohi
bition let us not be be
hind the foremost church in this
grand work lor God and the
salvation of men. Let every
Baptist in Gilttysr county feel
that he and thp^KMiiii.church to
which he belongs itaveru part in
this grand work ; and when it i
finally triumphant he will feel
proud of his work. 1 appeal to
every Baptist in the county to
slop and consider well before he
votes upon this very important
question. rrohibiliou is lh c
cause of right unit it is sure to
win sooner or later. I am lor
prohibition because 1 think it is
right and will be a blessing to
the country and the rising gener
ation.
Many will tell you that the doc
tors will sell whiskey all oVer the
land if you close the groceries
Such is not the case. l’he law
does not allow them any more
chance to sell whiskey than any
one else. These statements arc
made to deludo the uninformed
on the law. They tell you I hat
doctois can sell alcohol when iltey
please, but such is not the case.
Pure alcohol may be sold foi cer
tain purposes under certain cii
cumstances.
I understand that it is being
circulated widly that I am for
prohibition, because it gives me
the power to sell wlmky. J never
handled when I was a young man
and could have made money out
of it ; and I certainly would not
commence now when my head is
turning white for the grave, and
set up such an example to ruin
my boys and my neighbor's boys,
if Slie law even allowed me the
privilege. Besides if I look to my
own interest, I would be for whis
key. For the last 20 months
about one third of any practice
ha* been from the effects of whis
key, either by wounds or other
sickness that is caused by its ef
fects. If any man question (his,
he can have access to my books

interests in a financial wav are
on the other side. Further i am
satisfied there is not a physician
in Etlijay who would degrade his
professien in any suoh manner as
to turn bis office, his dug-slore,
into a tippling shop, even ir the
law allowed it. But tbe law that

A SENSIBLE VIEW.
We are made to wonder and
feel sad when we think that we
live in a county where there are
ministers of the gospel and
church members that are advo
cating the cause of whiskey,with
all the crime, degredation and
wretchedness that are the direct
results of the liquor traffic star
ing them in the lace, too, when
such characters as Judge Biown,
Judge Lochrane and many other
distinguished men that have a
right to know whereof they
speak say that les
sens crime and teHM prosper
ity and or
homes that have been blighted
by this great evil. Can such
men be followers of the meek and
lowly Lamb, or is it true that
they are following that old ser
pent that tempted Eve in the
garden ? Worldlings think the
latter, and we guess they are
about right. This prohibition
fight is no fight between church
es; neither is it a fight between
the church and (he world. The
issue is between right and wrong
ami all good citizens that have
the prosperity and happiness ol
the coun ry at heart are for (lie
right. We wliit it understood
ihat we are not a member of any
church, but a believer in church
es and church organization and
believe*that they have been Ibe
■neaps ot saving thousands of
souls and think that the world
would morally retrograde with
out them. But Christianity and
morality are ceria nly getting to
a low ebb when ministers and
church members will follow the
dictates ol a tew men (who are
making money out of the liquor
business) and their agents who
are going over Uie country with a
jug ol liquor making men drunk
and an ass ol themselves anti
telling the people not io volt
away their inherited rights,
fcuch so-called ministers and
church members aught to be ex
polled from the church and we
are almost rjatly to say from so
ciety of respectable people. We
fee! proud that there are some
ministeis and members in the
two great churches, the Baptist
and Methodist, in this county
that are advoeating (lie right and
we hope there are enough ol
them to keep the good Lord from
sinking the church orgau zitions
into perdition and that ali good
citizens, both cifurch members
and worldlings, will rally on the
10th day of this month and vote
whiskey oirt ol this county.
