OUR POSITION.
The Courier look the same po
sition on this prohibition ques
tion that il has ever taken on all
issues. We espoused the dry
Side because we thought il was
the best thing for this couiUy in
every respect. This is our posi
tion on every question, *e labor
for the cause we conceive to be
lhe right and lor the better.
While we have done that in this
Campaign, tfe were generous
enough to grant the same privi
lege to all others which we fear
lesslv look. We have done what
we did honestly and onacluaied
by any mercenary or uiiscrup
fllous end or inducements. Wlmt
we did was of our own free
choice, uninfluenced by any one,
and not only did so unpaid, hut
at an actual expense Th c
Courier opened its columns to
the public by publishing facts
about the merits of prohibition,
and its editors spent time, labor
and money to further, wiial we
think to be, a righteous cause.
We did this gladly and willingly
and Would do so again, believing
to we do, that if prohibition was
Carried and enforced in this coun
ty ft would be a blessing to our
citizens. We have waged our
part if the campaign on a gen
tle manly, honorable and manly
Way so far as we knew bow and
Hal concerned our motives. The
right to work for the wet side we
conceded to all, and we hope no
iflati on' that side did anything he
would be ashamed to acknowl
edge to an honorable public. We
have said aud done what we did
with the best of feelings to all
parlies, and this mi-rning we are
satisfied oyer tire result, so far as
We are individually concerned, il
it suits the people of-this county.
We caa live under this regime il
the people can, and we uropose
to abide by the will of a majority
of the people, though it be
against our desire. We think
Mow, as we did then, that prohi
bition is right, and we still think
that the discussion has done good
and that prohibition will ulti
mately Irminp. We are cheerful
over the result and are proud ot
ttie fact that the majority is as
small as it is, it being only 28C.
Whatever may ba said of the
campaign it is undeniable that
no issue has so aroused our citi
zens as the one jirtt closed ; and
though honest differences may
have beeu entertained by both
sides, let us all come together
and bear equally the burdens of
the result and forget all personal
feelings that the heat of passion
may have engendered. Let us
all accept the result cheerfully,
as we will be compelled to, and
make the better ot' it, and two
years to come let. us redouble our
energies to win for prohibition
au acknowledged victory.
ABOUT OUR SUCTION.
The summer boarder and the
excursionist hare taken complete
possession of this lovely retreat
among tfie mountains. We drink
the mineral water and pronounce
it good, tramp over the mountains
and gaze upon the wide, wide
world unfolded to our eyes with
Tarying emotions.
l On every height tbcfe ties repose."
And range upon range ot heights
are before us. interspersed with
streams and valleys,melting away
along the horizou into lines so
vague earth and sky seem one.
Jfot in the mood for such elevat
ed experiences, we lounge m the
beneficent shade of the fine trees
in front of the hotel, or stroll
idly along the fern-Bordered
Walks by the side of the clear
shallow streams.

GILINER COUNTY GIVES WrftS
KEY A GOOD MAJORITY-
The Day a Quiet One, but

ceives a Boost.
2£6 IS THE TUNE.
Tim election on prohibition lias
come and gone.
Tuesday’s election was one ol
the most remarkable ever held in
Gilmer county. The old man who
had long stayed at h< me and bad
abandoned the exercise of lue
right if suffrage, once more as--
sutned (lie loga of a voting citi
zen. Many men who had not, for
six or ten year, voted at all, cast
their ballots either lor | roliibit ion
or whiskey. The vote was an av
erage one, while men on belli
sides staved away and would not
vote. An unusual occurrence, a
thing turd ly known under similar
circumstances, characterized the
day all over llm coun'y, Not a
single row or fight or any die
graceful act. so lar as we have
heard, transpired during the day.
Every thing was the most grati
fying to the friends of good order
and this election will go down in
the history of old Gilmer, un
parallelled in precedent, and a
credit to her citizens. Loth sides
in 15i 1 ijay as a rule had a pleas
ant smile and a friendly word for
nis opponent. And the result
could not have been more grali'
lying under the existing circum
stances. In Eilijay district good
solid work lor both sides was
done, but the prohibitionists
downed the whiskey men by bet
ter work. Although savoral men
from adjoining districts i&h ij in
to town to swell the wet ticket
the proln’s worked with an un
flaggiug tenacity and closed the
contest in town with 93 majority
dry. At about 4 o’clock in the
afternoon news came in from
Cherry Log district that it had
gone § dry, and a little later that
Idoardlown had gone 64 majority
dry, coupled with the report ot
Dr. John Watkins from Oartecay
that up to the time he left the
polls it was 2 to 1 dry, made
many pale countenances and long
face in the ranks of ardent whis
key men. The news buoyed the
prohi’s and a ripple of excite
ment passed over the streets with
u smile on the face of prohibition
ists. About this time (he ques
tion of the legality of the wliis
kt-y ticket was mooted and the
whiskew men looked worse than
deleuled. spread
from lip to lip, and excited and
hasty consultations were started
up in the whiskey counsels. They
decided to ignore the charge and
tight for all they could gel.
The report evidently gained
credence for the printed ticket
was dropped and written ones
substituted. From 3to 6 o’clock
excitement and anxiety pervaded
all the more anxious element of
both sides, and reports were so
conflicting that all were unsatis
fied to credit them as true. But
the whiskey men were unques
tionably alarmed at the news,
while proln’s were surprisingly
gratilied. Reports later on
changed the balance and color
gradually come to the cheeks ol
scared whiskey men. Most of the
sober dry men were steadfast in
their belief of defeat in the elec
tiou and consequently sustained
no sting of feelings. It was amus
ing to see Hie fluctuating coun
tenances of meu moved by the
conflicting rumors. Below we
give the result of tiic vole as of
ficially declared, from which it
will be seen that a majority of
only 256 was gained by the whis
key side. This is gratifying to
the prohi’s, for offers to bet from
*IOO to *SOO were the night be
fore that the county would go
500 majority we . i’ne result is a
disappointment to the whiskey
men, for they confident It- expect
ed a very large majority fori
whiskey ;

Those suffering of misery and prostra
