—Alfred Ingle aiul Lakey Elliott were
elected bailiffs of the town district laat
Saturday. These officers hold their of
fice for two years. In speaking of their
lordship’s baiii<viek to Maj. G. H. Ran
dell of this place, he related to us the
scenes of the long ago, when the election
of bailiff was as important and exciting
an election as the representative is now.
At that time whiskey in all manners was
served to the voting public npon the
streets. Stews, eggnogs and sauces of ah
kinds flowed freely, and too, publicly
during the hours of voting The customs
in vogue io those honest and fair days
were so different from those of today un
der the stringent laws of the present as to
suggest remark by the groups discussing
these changes of time. Instead of having
free whisky, and t->at too, at the polls.
when men gloried in their bully way- aud
fought with fists, today the La iot-uox is
protected with every safeguard ot law by
whisky and its attendant evils being oar
red bv statutory provisions. The ad
vance of times is remarkable, and with it
consequent changes of public opinions
and public estimations of great moral is
sues and pro vinciai customs. We speak,
and act, and vote differently now to what
wc once did in oar primeval days of th
Republic, and especially Is it noticeable
that people an not afraid to speak their
convictions on such questions as the liquor
traffic, or asy other pouderous Issue.
