Dr. J. M. Bearden u in town this
week.
Mlm Annie Bearden of Clear Creek
spent last Sunday in town.
(Jome out to the Agricultural meeting
next Friday Week at tbe court bouse.
Hon. John Cobb, of fillijay, was in town
this week on business.—Spring Place
Times.
Misses Mary and Ida McH&u, two
cbaiming young ladies of Cartecaj, were
in town Sunday last.
Hon. R. M. Pulsifer, Col. Gen. R. Ea
ger, Supt. J. B. Glover, of tbe Marietta &
North Georgia railroad, passed up tbe road
last Tuesday in a special coach to Murphy
N. C.
Tbe bristling grass that peers up through
the wreck of winter, tbe rattling songsters
that warble their matin homage, and tbe
warm sunshine that provokes a gentle las
situde, forces tbe proverbial “springtime”
upon us in unmistakable terms.
Our young frieud, Mr. L. L. Bi-hop,
who has been attending the Southern Med
ical College of Atlauta tbe past four
months, returned home last Monday. Mr.
Bishop is a clever young man, aud another
term in College will make him a full
fledged M. D.
Dr. E. W. v> alkins, after fixing up hie
residence lot generally, has plantel several
nice shade trees along the sidewalk iu front
of, and around, his residence aud drug
store. As we have never before said any
thing about planting shade trees on town
property, we consequently say nothing
about this. But for tear somebody else
might plaut some, we meutiou this.
An editor who knows, by experience,
what be is talking about, says, “A news
paper is the picture of the place in wbicb
it is pilblisbed. It is received by the out
a le world as a photograph of the place.
People that say ‘it will do no good’ should
remember this: Every matter
if large or small, should be represented in
a home paper. It is a home institution,
and should houestly receive all that is due

Dr. Charles M. Curtis of Fannin county,
later of this place, graduated at the South
ern Medical College of Atlanta, last Thurs
day. with distinction; receiving a gold
medal for the best in the practice of med
icine. Since graduating, be has beeu ap
pointed resident physician of Ivy Street
Hospital in that city. We are always glad
to bear of a young man’s successes in any
department of life, but we are doubly
proud to learn of a North Georgia boy
making bis way up the winding stair-way
of Fame’s uncertain heights.
Hey. Hugh Boyd, presiding elder of the
M. E. Church, and Prof. John H. Early
o the Seiniuary, have chaleuged Messrs.
E W’. and W. S. Coleman for a discuss
iai of the question, “Resolved, that Con
science is in all cases a Correct Moral
Guide.” The chalenge has been accepted,
and the discussion will be public in the
upper bail of the Seminary on Friday night,
March 18th. The speakers will be limited
and the debate will be befoie three judges.
The hall will be well lighted aud arrange
ments made for a full audience. The
Messrs. Coleman have the affirmative and
the other gentiemeu the negative. The
public generally is invited to atteud.
We ask tbe attention of the public to
the call of Col. Pickens elsewhere in this
ieue for an agricultural convention to meet
in tins place on Friday, March 18tb. W'e
earnestly hope every farmer in tbe county,
who can, will lie here, so that every con.
dition of the farmer’s calling will be rep
resented. This may be tbe last effort that
is made for tbe farmers of tbe county hy
their friends, and if they fail to make tbe
best of this effort they alone aie responsi
ble for tbe failure. Let every body come,
aud then tbe matter will be laid before the
public in short talks by different individ
uals. >
Master Willie A. Johnson, who is at
tending school at Cave Springs, Ga, sent
his mother, Mrs. Dr. Johnson of this place,
a handsome bouquet which was a trophy
of literary merit that be lately wou in that
town. He, in company with others, at
tended the 18th birthday reception of Miss
Jessie Corput of that place, and this e!e
gant bouquet was offered the guest who
would recite the most sentimental and
witty quotation. He being tne lucky one,
was the victor of the evening, aniT'lhe
little package seut home was a token of
the youthful successes of bis first school
days away front home.
The first quarterly conference of the M
E Church, South, was held iu Ellijay last
Saturday: The circuit made the best re
port it has for many years, being the sec
ond best report of any circuit In the Dah
iooega district, up to date, in point of fi
nancial support of the ministry. Rey. A.
C. Thomas, P £, was present, and, du
ring the meeting, preached some veay able
and stirring sermons. His effort on Sun
day at 11 o'clock was lisieued to by an
unusually large and remarkably attentive
congregation. The sermon was one of
power and eloquence rarely ever listened
to in Ellijay, aud indicated the research
aid thought of a devoted minister. The
North Georgia Conference has few such
preachers, and the cause of Christ few
abler advocates than this gifted divine. We
heard many speak of It as smoeg the finest
pulpit dacoursen they ever listened to The
nest quarterly conference will be at Nim
Mile church in June. Bey. Mr Tlmmea
left Monday few Jssper where be will hold
the quarterly conference of thal circuit.
The Da-aonville News comes to the
front with a real, live 7-columu paper, and
aftei remarking groetaily, says, “When
ever we take up a newspaper and see that
no merchant* advertise in tbe paper we
conclude that the town has no merchant*
or that tboae who are there are running
down their stock and do not know when
they will discontinue business. Wbeu we
see the merchants of the town bare large
ads. in the town paper we believe that they
are selling goods, that they aim to sell
goods, and that they are carrying a fall
stock always fresh from tbe market.
Phinias T. B irmim, the great American
showman, spoke experimentally when lie
said, “Stauding advertisements in a paper
command confidence. Tbe man, who for
years lives in one community aud leads a
reputable life, even though be be of mod
erate ability, will grow iu tbe confidence
and esteem of bis fellows. On tbe same
principle a newspaper advertisement be
comes familiar in the eyes of the readers.
It may seldom be read, still it makes the
name and business of a man familiar, and
its presence in the columns of a paper in
spires confidence in tbe ability of its en
terprise.”
Since the late warm weather has set in
tbe gardens of town present a lively scene.
Those three hand-maids of tbe garden, the
shoyel, the wheel-barrow and tbe plow,
are doing effective work just now.
Mototaistown.—Burning the woods
aud gardening are the topics at present.
