■ Rev. K Shope preached an excellent,
sermon at the Baptist chu.ck in this plate
last Sunday oil the resurrection of the
dead. The church is now lighted by two
elegant chandeliers and a handsome
swinging lamp wh cli adds greatly to the
attractions of the church, and when it is
painted, will lie a neat and creditable
place trt worship.
Maj. Monroe informs us that the route
already surveyed from the city to the river
is a very feasible and direct one, and that
the work will not he so difficult nor costly
as has beeu supposed. He further Bys
that lie thinks he has discovered a way by
which lie can run to and cross the river at
the island just above the Shallow Ford
that will be an improvement ou the very
practical one above mentioned.—Gaines
ville Eagle.
The way to build up a town is for the
citizens to woik together, and look to the
interest of the town as well as self. No
town on the continent can prosper when
its citizens are close-fisted, conniving and
selfish. A town has interests that belong
to the body of citizens composing it as
well as its citizens have individual inter
ests, and if they fail to respect the town’s
welfare, it will dwindle amt ematiate as
certainly as a private fortune will deterio
rate if left unprovided for and unprotected
Gainesville Eagle: Major Monroe, with
his party of engineers, have for a few
days past been engaged in running lines
to overcome the very fotmidable obstacle
presented by the Davis ridge, in the route
from Gainesville to Harmony Grove,
'i hey report their success in establishing a
line down the left side of the ridge, with a
uniform grade of 11-4 feet per hundred,
crossing it about a mile eastward of the
main gap and with a six feet cut at a
point 180 feet lower. Then the line
crosses the lower spurs of the ridge and a
small creek, and ascends a spring branch
which heads at Hartwell’s, very near
Tadmore, court ground. They will lun
on for ten miles more with but little diffi
culty. It is now clearly demonstrated
that the approaches to .and through this
city are perfectly feasible.
Ellijay must move up a peg, or she will
be left forever in the ashes of forgetful
ness and insignificance. Other towns
around us are moving up with the sp l it of
progress, commensurate with the times,
and if we fail to keep apace with the
progress of the great boom now prevalent
in tbe South, We are forever goue. Even
Blue liidge is outstripping Ellijay, Mur
phy is taking a bold step towards m de
rial development. About sixty-five lots
have been sold there, and work on a out
twenty-five houses has, or will begiu
soon, and the people manifest a disposi
tion to build up the town. If the people
< f Ellijay ever expect their town to do
any thing they alone must start the ball.
No'ody else Is g ilng to come in here and
•tart a boom for you, or build bouses and
give them to you. That’s not the way
tow u* are built.

Selfishness, eay an exchange, will kill a
town. Liberty and public spirit will
build it up. When men serve their end
without regard to the city's interest they
strike a blow at its pr gress. Between a
town with money and another with en
terprise we would select the latter. Mon
eyed men are of little interest to a town
unless they are of the right kind; unselfish,
generous are public spirited. Money
alone will not make a town or cause bus
iness to, grow and thrive Behind il
must be willing; wide awake, euergetic
men who w.ll push.
