pleasant memories of hia journey. In
trying to reach India he wax twice turned
back on hia journey, once by Ruiutians ia
Central Aaia and again by the Afghans
on the frontier. lie wai thus forced to
take a more roundabout way. The re
porta concerning hia rough treatment by
peasants in China were fully corroborated
by (Stevens, and be added that he was
very glad to escape with his life. To use
his own description he says: “I arrived
at Canton, Octoher 11, 1886, by steamer
from Calcutta, and proceeded up the Ki
Kiang River through the Province of
Quang Tung. At first the crowds that
followed me did not make any attempt at
molestation, simply pressing around me
curiously. At Ta Ho, however, two sol
diers were provided as an escort, and
traveled with me to Kingan Foo. Here
a mob commenced jostling me, then took
to throwing pepples, and finally bricks.
I was knocked down, and my large pith
helmet alone saved my life. Soldiers
warned the crowds that I was armed, but
they wrenched my bicycle from me and
would have demolished it had not the
soldiers interfered. The mob howled and
clamored for me like a lynching party,
and had I not been provided with a vice
regal passport I would never have escaped
the clutches of the heathens. At mid
night I was packed in a palanquin and
carried down to a sampan, surrounded by
native soldiers, who treated me much as
if I were a murderer whom they were un
willingly obliged to guard. The mob
must have nunilien-d upward of 2,000,
and the air was full of stones, my body
being bruised all over. At Kui Kiang I
was placed on board a steamer plying on
the Yangtse to Shanghai, and then once
again I breathed freely.” Mr. Stevens’s
experience has led him to form some very
derided opinions upon Chinese character
istics. While journeying in Borne parts
there were nothing but narrow footpaths,
which began and ended in the most un
expected pluccs, so that sometimes he did
not nmke over a mile an hour, and a
large part of the time he was obliged to
dismount and walk,owing to obstructions.
Finally at one time he gave up trying to
ride and hired a boat, in which he
traveled for eight duys, resorting at the
completion of that time to his wheel
again. In Japan ho received the very
best of treatment, and his journey
through that country was much enjoyed.
Mr. Stevens is a short young man of
medium bight, and has spent all of his
former life west of the Mississippi as a
ranchman. He was a resident of Kansas,
and is apparently between the ages of
twenty-five and thirty yearn.

The Prose of Cow Patching.
Time was, and not so very long ago
either, when the cowboys leceived their
pay after the round-up they felt in duty
bound to go to Miles City and blow it
in at the gambling dens, saloons, and
other disreputable places. Cow punch
ing is at best a very tough business, and
full of risks to the life and limb, and
pav is small and by no means adequate,
and after the round-up there follows a
long period ot enforced idleness, during
which they are given food and lodging
only by the ranch owner. The average
cowiioy was wont to turn up after bis
semi-aunuat spree with a very large
head and not a cent in his pocket. Of
late, however, the boys have taken a
tumble to themselves and are saving
their money. So common has the eco
nomical spirit beeomo among them that
Miles City has seen this year its quietest
season.
Mpst of the cowboys looked upon
their coming to Montana to herd cattle
as the mistake of their lives. The glow
ins stories of thrilling ndventuro and
sudden wealth of the cowboys’ life which
are common in the Kant are in most
cato\ responsible for their entering the
field, but the reality is quite a different
matter. Many of the economical ones
have been enabled by their savings to
return to their t astern homes.
People who have not been through the
had landa have but a faint conception
of the utter desolation anu worthless
ness of a cowboy's homo. Ho is roasted
in summer and froz.en in winter. The
lands can never be used for anything but
grazing, and the distances nro therefore
something immense. One peculiarity of
the country makes rapid riding a very
difficult, not to say dangerous, under
taking. The earth is so fraiable that a
tiny watercourse will speedily cut for
itself a deep gully, or “coolie,” as it is
called, tho depth of which when filled
with snow is entirely pioblemutical. A
horseman who rides with a cowboy’s
recklessness may suddenly find himself
at the bottom of a six or eight foot
coolie, with his horse on top of him,
and no way to get out—if he happens to
be still alive—save tunnelling up to the
head of tho stream through the enow.
Then one of your broncho’s feet is as
likely as not to sink suddenly two feet
down into a coyote's hole when he is
going at a furious pace. Result: His leg
snaps off like a pipe stem and you are
shot through tho air to a point far be
yond, and picked up more dead than
alive he water is generally bitter
with alkali, and scorches your throat as
you swallow it; there is little to cat,and
that is hard to get.
A farmbr near Qniney, 111, save
while feeding his chickens fine morning
four wild geete came flying toward his
barnyard, and after circling above him
several times lit among the fowls. He
caught one of them, whereupon the ,
others, attacked him viciously, but he
managed to, secure a second one, and
to drive off the other two.

Can’t Fool me Twice, 99
Hood's Sarsaparilla Is a peculiar medicine. In
. Terj many respects It is so different from any and
all other medi 'inos erer offered to the public that
It Is with peculiar force and propriety that it may
be said to be Pace liar to Itself. It is peculiar to
Itself. In a strictly medicinal sense, in three import
ant particulars, tls. : first, In the combination of
remedial agents used; second, in the proportion in
Peculiar to Itself
which they are mixed; third, In the process* by
which the active curative properties of the prepara
tion are secured.
These three Important points make Hood's Sarsa
parilla peculiar In the wonderful cures It has accom
plished, wholly unprecedented In the history ot
medicine, and giving to Hood’s Sarsaparilla a clear
right to the title of “The greatest blood purifier ever

Hood’s Sarsaparilla is peculiar In the phenomenal
record of the sales it has attained, never equaled by
any other preparation In so short a time. Older
medicines have been forced to stand aside when
real medicinal merit was considered, and today
Hood’s Sarsaparilla stands* the£leading medicine of
Its kind in the country. It is peculiaiiin its strength
and economy—loo doses one dollar, it Is a concen
trated extract from , Sarsaparilla, Dock, Juniper
Berries, Mandrake, Dandelion, and other valuable
vegetable remedies, and is much stronger than any
similar preparation npon the market. Hence, much
smaller doses of Hood’s Sarsaparilla are necessary
than Is tho case with other medicines. A dollar bot
tle of Hood’s Sarsaparilla contains an average of
mors than 100 doses, and will last a month, while
others will average to last not over a week. Hence
on the simple question of economy Hood’s Sarsa
parilla is given a decided preference. If you have
never tried this mcdlciae, do so thissea&n.
