A Courkction. —An error occurred
in publishing the grand jury present
ments last week. They reeomended
that the C'leik of the County Com
missioners be paid S2OO, and wc
made them say S3OO. We do not*
see bow the mistake occurred, as we
had the original article, and read
the proof by copy.
In Texas —Rev. Rufus Figh, pas
tor of the West Point Baptist church,
is now on a visit to his brother and
children in Bryan Texas, The Ap
peal notices his arrival in very com
plirnentary terms, and says Mr. Figh
stands deservedly high with his con
gregation at home, both as a minister
and an accomplished gentleman. In
addition to being an educated man
be has bad rare opportunities of
travel in Europe and in the Holy
Lund.
Something about the Court
There were ten jurors dnwn from
Catnula, of which number, five were
on the grand jury. Four of the
grand jurors were in Company K.
35th Ga. Regiment, and were in the
same “gomb’’ during the war. A
vrey interesting feature in the court
was the great interest one of the Ca
*aula bachelors, also a juryman, man
ifested in a case in which was argued
the “rights of woman” and the “priv
ileges of man”. The verdict can be
easily imagined, as this bachelor
ranks as Major General in that line,
was foreman of the jury.
Death.- —We regret to chronicle
the death of Mrs. R. A. Holland, nee
Miss Sallie Roberts, which occurred
last Wednesday evening. Mrs. 11.
was sick but a lew hours, having
been taken only the evening before.
She was buried at the family bury

fectionate lady, and her loss w ill be
seriously felt in a large circle of

An old proverb says, “ Laugh and

ought to get pigs that could laugh.
Wouldn’t it save corn, though ?
And now cometh Robert to the

that; own up like a mail!
The Ciceronians decided that

Don’t forget it—during leap year

A breed of dogs without tails has

Now is the time for giving in your

is “ Should the old stockholders of

C'.ilquitt aud His Gurnee,s.
Since the retirement of Governor
Smith from the gubernatorial race,
there seems to be a lull in the cm
vas for the position. It is, generally,
conceded that Cohpiiu’s clianceH are
now brighter than ever, an 1 particu
] I.irly so in the miil.Uo and southern
pun ions of this State. Unless am in
| from the northern part ofthu Slati is
j nominated, North Georgia is decid
;ly in favor of Colquitt. Some of his
i opponents are endeavoring to use the
! failure of the Life Insurance Com pa
i ny against him, but that is all bosh,
and wil fall to the ground. Wo
will not lo surprised to see the whole
army of candidat'S arrayed against
Colquitt, and think that the race
is between himself and Colquitt, just
as it was with Governor Smi li befi re
Ins withdrawal. Wc believe that
Colquitt, since Governor Smith lias
come out of the race, is the most
popular, at present, in this section.
We have no choice in the matter,
save the selection of the people, and
when that is made, we shall give our
vote and influence to secure the elec- j
lion of the man nominated. There
are good men in field, and all worthy j
of the position, but we are inclined to :
the idea that the man who is to he j
the next Governor of Georgia is not
in the field yet, and will come in on
the home stretch and win the race.
Hon. John W. Murphey
Before brother Styles, of the Al
bany News, became well acanainted
withCapt. West Murphey, of the
Slate Capitol, he was rather inclined
to on him. Recently onr
brother became better acquainted
with the Captain and now 'thinks
him one of the greatest men in the
State. J/oral: Know a man before
you judye him. — /Standard.
Whatever may be said to the con
trary, there is not a more social, clev
er, hightoned gentleman in the State
than Capt. Murphey, and we are
glad that brother Styles has found it
out. A better acquaintance would
cause some of the other breihen, who
have been inclined to the opinion of
Col. Styles, to change their minds
and attribute the honor to him which
be richly deserves.
Farms in Harris.
W. E. Munifoid, E.-q., editor of
the Talbot ton inland ml lias been on
a visit to Huiitikon, and pays quite a
compliment to the formers of Harr s
county. Particularly, is this encour
aging when it is remembered that lie
came through the section in which
both the destructive tornadoes pass
: ed.
Here is w hat he says:
“From Talbotton to Hamilton it
js twenty-two and a half miles, and
Hamilton is said to he this distance
from every town and city around it.
We started early Thursday mop ing.
The whole route is over the red hills
of this part of the Stale. For the
gratification of all, wc may say that
the pictures of farm life that were
seen along this road presented any
thing else but dilapidation and ruin.
From Talbotton to Hamilton every
farm is in fine trim and order for the
coming crop. This is stated without
a single exception. Oil every farm,
especially in Harris county, there is
evidence that the people are up and
at it. The fences ate all in fine order,
their corners are clean; the houses,
mostly, arc painted a beautiful white;
the barns and out houses arc in
thorough ropair, the manure pi es are
large and frequent, the stock are fat
and sleek, the yards are cleanly and
the cows and calves are able to stand
alone. Ail this would seem to indi
cate there is no need of hard times
so fur as these people are concerned.
And we must not forget to say that
there is an abundance of small grain
planted. We passed some of the
I largest and finest fields of it we have
ever seen. A gentleman near Ham
ilton has a field of wheat and oats
| that excels anything we ever saw in
this fine. The field contains about
j forty acres.”

l'i>. Journal —Agreeable to my
promise, in my last communication,
I nil now tell you something about
Dr. Folsom’s eye infiimary, which i
situated about two and a half miles
from the mu y of Dalton. The loca
tion was chosen, lirst, on account o
the hcnlihfulnrss of the phoe, good
water; and, secondly, because his
patients are entirely r. moved from
the dust and glare incident to tow ns.
It is certainly one of the prettiest
locations in North Giorgiu, mid sur
rounded as it with good land, plenty
of running w ater, fine orchards ol
fruit, a tine vineyard and a beautiful
fi-hpond, makes it one of the most
desirable residences I ever saw. The
Doctor has a very large, commodious
house, and every convenience for mak
ing his patients comfortable and pleas
ant. Ho only i t quires the worst cases
to hoard w itli him 4 nnd is now treating,
at their houses, a large number ot
patients, whose eyes have not been
chronically affected. His success in
the treatment 1 of all infliiinatiotis has
been truly wonderful, not having
faded to cure in a single instance
when under his immediate supervis
ion. A Air. Gilbert, from Tennesson
is now under his treatment, and ten
days ago when ho came, could not
soo his way, having had grann’ar
lids for live years, and had nearly
become hopelessly blind. Now he
can see to read largo pr int, and in a
low weeks will be entirely well. I
was astonished when I inquired into
his mode of treatment, at the very
low pricbcharged for curing the most
difficult coses. It is certainly ill the
power of every one who has diseased
eyes to have them treated by going
to bis infirmary.
The Superior Court has been in
session two weeks, and Judge Mc-
Cutehen lias dispatched a large
amount of business. The Dalton jail
was tilled with prisoners of the ‘'col
ored persuasion,’’ and most of them
"went up” from one to ten years, to
Joe Brown’s coal mine.
Tli 3 city voted whiskey shops out
last fill, and as a consequence, not so
many true bills were found at this
term of the court as usual.
Times are hard, or ai “ Peggotty”
would say, a little near, yet creditors
are indulgent, and all aro getting
along in conduit.
In my next 'tionlrmiuicaioii wil.
tell you .something about a grand
fishpond, with some incidents that
are hard to believe, yet nevertheless
are true.
Will also speak of the c lieges and
educational advantages offered here.
For the present adieu.
