Several good communications which we have received this week are crowded out of this issue, They will appear in our ne*t, The schedule of the NY it S. rail road has chnugcd and trains will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Satur days. We will make the change in the advertisement nest week, Judge K'tnbrough informs us that ho has had a moss of Irish potatoes of Ids ow n raising and of this year’s growth the first we have heard of in the county. Since writing the foregoing, we learn that Mr. Joel TANARUS, Johnson lias had two messes of the tubers, lie goes head, Harris county Agrie-ultural Society meets regularly on the Stturday be fore the third Sabhaih in each month at 3 o’clock r. m., in the Courthouse. Subject for discussion next meeting: Culture of Potatoes. We hope our commissioners will take some steps, before the next term of the Superior Court, to fit up the courthouse with seats and other con veniences for spectators. This is a matter that should be attended to; the people pay their titles, and their comfort ought to be consulted, P. T. Scjilky Chapter No. 30 We are happy to state that this Chap ter is relieved of all embaira.-sments with the Grand Royal Arch Chap ter, and will continue its regular meetings on the 4th Friday in each month, at 2 o’clock p. m., m the Ilall iu Hamilton, Ga. A large attendance is expected. The editor has returned from Ins grand “jamboree’’ to Savannah, with all his pockets crammed full of copy, but w o are running the machine this week ; hence he w ill tell all about the Georgia quill shovers in our next i-sue. lie came too late to have a showing this week, but extra copies giving a glowing description can be bad for o cents a copy; send in your orders early. Last Saturday night a week ago, there was a pleasant, meeting of a lodge of Good Samaritans at F..-q. Janus Smith’s. Several were present to witness the conferring of the degree n port Mrs. Smith. Dr. Mitchell, Mr. Wm. Goodman, and Prof. La Ilatte officiated. Spring is here all in its beaqty. The trees are clothi and ill green nnd our streets are tVguiii becoming btau tifnl. Hamilton is one of the pretti est summer places we ever saw; the forest growth and the mountain scenery around the town; the pleas ant breezes and the sweet-singing birds, all in pleasing combination, call to mind the garden ot Edoa jn its hap; y days. Not long since a friend perpetrated a joke on us in which our name and and a chestnut orchard figured con spicuously. We now propose to get even. This same friend recently vis ited Columbus, and while there, went to the jail, sight-seeing. An official, who is a very obliging gentleman, ad mitted him, and after pointing out Kendrick and some other curiosities, was called off on business. As he went out be locked the door, and there was our friend closed up in jail. Whether it was the result of accident, or design, we will not state ; but we have it from our friends own mouth, that as soon as he knew he was lock ed in, he felt queer. This sets U3 even. Picnic. —The patrons and students of the male school will picnic next Friday. They meet at the mill, ter minus Mill street, and thence repair to the picnic grounds, near a fine spring iu the bend of the creek just below the mill. The .chief feature of the day will be the forest post office and reading the m ; ail received, at 3 o’clock p. m. The patrons and stu dents of the femalecollgo are respect fully invited to bo present and take part in tbe pleasure of the day. The friends of the school, generally, are also cordially invited. Don’t fail to, bring a little dinner along with you Come young and old, and let us bo joyful together. N. B.—Prof. La Hatte will act as mail agent, and will receive letters at any time up to the opening o.f the mail. A lleai.tht Town. —Ac an evi dence of the healthfulness of Hamil • ton we mention the following facts: Some years ago a lot of coffins, burial cases, Ac., was .consigned to a mer chant wiio was then in business here. They were marked down at prices low* er than they could have been made for by any of the workmen in town; but there was no sale for litem—the peo ple would not die, and coffins are just such articles us people have no uso for as long as they live—so a short time ago the consignee boxed than up and shipped them back to consignor with the account t “No sales—goods returned.” A healthy place) Hut their is another evidence ot the fact; Our resident physioan— we have but one now j the rest have folded iheir tents ami gone away to raoro favorable localities in which to ply their profession— says ho thinks lie will he obliged to go to Texas; it is so alarmingly healthy in Hamilton. It was only the other day that ho told us he had the entire practice of the whoie region round about, but it; was difficult to keep “buckle and tongue’’ together. We cordially iu- \ vile those in search ot health to come 1 to Hamilton and s<j urn with us, and especially do we invite those who wi'll to spend the summer in a health v tow nto come here. Hoarding will be cheap, end such arrangement* can be made as will be pleasant and sat isfactory to all parties. THE PICNIC. The picnic next F.iduy will he a grand affair, and it is hoped will be largely attended. The following committees have been appointed, and they will please see that their part of die programme is carried out; OX ARRANGEMENT. Judge 11. C. Kimbrough, Mr. J. W. Story. Dr. T. S. Mitchell, Mrs. J. M. Mobley, Mrs. Tom Copeland, Mrs. Jaa. Lovelace anil Mrs. Allen Brooks. ON LOVE LETTERS. J. 11. Mobley, W. O. Johnson, Eu gene Granberry, Miss Emma Dora Johnson, Miss Ilatohie Cook and Miss Jimmie Mobley. ON BADGES. B. C. Kimbrough, A. F. Copeland, C. H. Cook, Miss Mina Darden, Miss Ida Hunley and Miss Emma En grain, The committee on badges w ill have them prepared and ready for distri bution by 12 m, ut which time each young gentleman will draw a badge and act as escort to the young l.ojy wearing the corresponding badge. IN THE COUNTY. Some theives broke into Mr. Jas. M. Kimbrough’s smoke house one night Use week and carried off 71 pounds of bacon. Mr. Frank Ingram, a good citizen living near Mt, Airy, died last Tues day morning, lie left a largo family and many lyiends to mourn his de parture. The prisoners sentenced at last term of the court by Judge Crawford to do public work for tho State were carried off Thursday by Mr. J. M. Pale to work in J. T. $ W. T. Grant’s brickyard. This leaves our jail en tirely empty. May it long remain so. Leg Broken. —Jno. Houghton was driving a yoke of oxen a few days ago, and they ran away, throwing him out and breaking his leg be tween the knee and the ankle. Dr. MoGehee attended him and reports that be is doing very well. The crop prospects are, thus far, very flattering. We hear some fly ing rumors of rust in the small grain, but up to the present have not been able to positively ascertain whether it is real rust, or only a red mold. May the Lord smile upon us anil give us good crops; our people are all in a great need of such a blessing. SaijAccii): nt. —Clements, a little son of Mr. J. N. Matthews, had his eye badly cut by a negro girl, one day last week, and fears are enter tained that, he w ill lose his sight. The negro nor anyone else docs not seem to know how it occurred, only that she was using a hatchet chop ping bean slicks, and accidently cut, him in the face. The little fellow suffered a great deal, but' is doing very well at piesent. Quarterly Melting. —Tbo regu lar quarterly meeting for the Ca tania circuit was held at dowers’ church last Saturday and Sunday. The meeting was a harmonious one, and the attendance on Sabbath was more than the hou-c could accomo date. Mr. MoGehec is a fine thinker, and preached an able sermon on the “Last Supper”, An impediment in his speech detracts somewhat from his delivery. Excursion. —Last Saturday even ing ihe City Council ofColiwnhus, on an invition from Nipt. Jtedd, made an excursion trip over the N. <fc S. Railroad. They report the road in fine order, and seemed anxious that the road should be completed. They compliment Mr. Itedd very highly as a railroad officer, and it is believed that few men could have taken the road in the condition which he did and have met with more success. They return, and by the same train and It ere all well [ Jvaocv. HARR S SHERIFF’S SALE.
