N\ 11. Barden, Esq.
The gentleman whoso name heads
this article has been of invaluable ser
vice to Harris county. In I*B2 He
was elected Justice ot tho Peace,
and held tbu office four years. In
1836, he was dueled Clerk of tho
Sutitnior Com:, and has held the po
sition for the p t forty consecutive
years- During that tin,,, he has held
the office of del k ot the lubirtor
court, eight years; clerk of the Coun
ty oourt, two years; clerk of 'he
District court, one year; clerk of the
County Commissioners court, six
years; and has on several occasions
held the office of Ordinary, ex-officio.
While he was J. P., lie married eigli
teen couples, the lirst of whom was
Isaac Patrick, forty-three years ago,
and the last, Osborn Stone who was
buried iu Hamilton, a tew years ago.
During Mr. Barden’s different terms
in office, no man lias aught to charge
against him. lie lias discharged his
duty faithfully and honestly, uud it
will be with many regrets that the
people learn that ho has determined
to retire to private life. VVe feel as
sured that no man in the county
could obtain as large a vole
as lie for re-election to his office, ’.at
he i- positive, and says that he can
not, in justice to himself, accept it
again. Mr. Barden has been faithful
to all his trusts, and the people show
their appreciation ot his worth by in
sisting on liis re-election.
Our Schools.
The cio-itijo exercises of both, tins

One day later (Thursday) follows

Atlanta will be remarkable in spite
of all efforts to the contrary. The
Commonwealth of Thursday evening
says. Twelve months Mime there
were two couples married in this city
at precisely the same hour; a child
was horn to each at t.lie same bout,
last week both chrildren died at the
same hour, and were hurried at the
same hour, in two adjacent section at
j Oakland cemetery. The parties are in
no wise related, and wo learn, are
not even acquaintances. Mutual
Irieiids have observed aud reported
these remarkable coincidences.

Communications. —Several very in i
teresiing ones appear on the first page
of this issue, and we call special at
tention to them. One from our
correspondent at Mt. Airy will be
found very interesting and we fully
endorse his sentiments. Another
from Kev. J B. McGeohee, will be
ivad with interest. The letter from
Hon. H. 11. Harris, in reference to a
cadet appointment, should be taken
advantage of, and see if we cannot
get the appointment from this
county.
We also publish a letter from An
derson Mobley, a negro who was
wild with the “Emmigration’’ fevor,
and left here last winter for* the
West. The letter was written to
Col. Mohlev, imploring aid from iii
in order to return. V\ e are as niueli
in sympathy with those who are un
fortunate and suffering, as any one,
Cut we hope the Colonel will let An
derson remain where he is for the
present.
