Our Citt Council.— lt i* not of ten the case that we are inclined to find fault with our official", and as a, general thing are inclined to look up on their short coming" with a grsat deal of chanty, hut at the aame time we are running a newspaper for the benifit of the public as well as our selves, and with the order that is now kept on the street, we are at a loss to kD 'ow how we are to get any items The Council should remember i M the people want a newsy paper, am as long as they manage the town af fairs with that fidelity and impartial ly that has marked them for the plst few months, we cannot hope for a street broil, or anything of the kind. A Hoc, Killing Time.— Mr. Thos. Copeland gave his hogs striebnme, ].,t week, in order to keep them from being stolen, and next morning found ic of them dead. It was rather wether for slaughtering hog", loss falls heavily upon Mr. i as he intended them for t fall. Some of them were would weigh from 100 to Lofiil Briofis. Mr. Wise, of L.\qrango, Ga., was in town yesterday. Mr. J as Clark and lady, of Florence, Ga., are in town visiting their rela tives. Yesterday was first Tuesday- but we don't feel liko telling all that was done in onr short space. There is a good deal of sickness through this cowry at present. The physiciaus ought to get rich. We regret to learn that Professor La Matte is still quite ill, but we hope soon to hear of his entire recovery. Judge fl. C. Kimbrough and lady, and Mrs. Dr. Pitts and daughter have returned from the Sulpher Springs. The Springs seem to have agreed with them, i Messrs. Hudson, Killpatrick, Wil liams, and Hargette left for .Atlanta yesterday. They have gone to at tend the Gubernatorial Convention which convenes to-day. Mr. George Fearce, of Columbus, visited our village last Sabbath. He is quite a nice young man, and we, at all times, will be glad to welcome such visitors in our midst. A great deal of pleasure is antici pated by those who expect to attend the picnic at Blue Spring next Fri day. We have no doubt but that it will be quite a pleasant affair. Miss Mollie Threlkild, who lias been spending several weeks in town, has returned home. We regreted very much to see Miss Mollis leave, and hope she may soon make us an other visit. Mr. Mason, through some cause, has failed to send us the address de livered by him at the commencement exercises in this place, and many will be disappointed in not finding it in this issue. If you would like to smoke splen did cigiv s at. bottom prices, go io N. 11. Harden's, and Mr. O. fl. Cook, with all the courtesy characteristic ofagi eman, will wait upon y.-u, and supply your wants. Mr. C. A Lovelace, of the firm of Thernton & Acee, Columbus, G.i., graced our sahetninn last I | We were glad to see you, t.i.ailes, and hope you will call again when you have longer to slay. What has become oftlie city park ! That should not he despaired of. We learn that tlie B lplist Church \vi 1 donate the loi in front of their building to be used as Such, Let our authorities wake up to this matter, and give the ball a start. We have hea&d of a good many j who expect to attend the general j meeting at Bethany next Saturday and Sunday. The people above the j mountain are very hospitable, and ; they will, no doubt, make everything ■ idea.ant and agreeable to those who attend. Our bachelor friend, Col. k'ns, made us a pop call last Monday. He is still driving that span of grays ' which are sm-h a terror to our young I men. and a charm to the voting belies. We regret that the Col. had such a short time to remain with us, but lie will be up again soon. Tltese are beautiful moonlight nights, and the young and the gay are not at a loss to know how to spend them. They stroll to the Col lege, and there, in the silvery glow of the peeping luna, couples are to be seen seated in silent places vvliis periug of their deepest feelings of friMlbip (?) for cach other we 8U 1" pose. Some, that their feelings may be more elated, ascend to the ob- I servatory; but w. prefer being near the ground on such oooModh— it iug paradise enough for ns. It should he the pride of every place to have a respectable cemetery, but it doesn’t seem to be the case here. Persons visiting our graveyard would be apt to think, and justly so, that those of us who do remain, only walk but do not live; for so far a" a spirit of enterprise is concerned, we seem to be totally dead. But this should not be the case. Let us have a cemetery which we would not be ashamed for VM)t . Ham ilton nop nml J'ugllt to do better than this. Let the ladies take hold; the did oneo, and v. ith success, so far as they went. Mrs, Eliz bath McDaniel, wife of B. F. McDaniel, died at her resi i dence, near Bethel church, on I loirs day morning, the 27th ultimo. Mrs. McDaniel’s illness was protracted, anil often painful. We are not in formed as to where she was buried. •Notaries Fu^nc. fc. The following named gentfomen, j lmvc been corniiHs-mnud us Notarh a Public in the u. M. Croquet. —Tnis gone seems to be growing Quito t'ashioilali'o this dull weather, and we are glad to see Urn young people enj‘ > V themselves. There are two or three very nice scs in town, and it "ill be a delightful exercise in the evening, alter being shut, up in the house all day. 'J i>o young ladies who own the sots will take pleasure in allowing others to enjoy the game, and you cannot find a better exercise. Conferkncu. —To-night there will be prayer meeting at the Methodist church, and also a business meeting. We are requested by the pastor to u.’ge all the members, particularly, to attend, as delegates to the District. Convention will he elected. We take this opportunity to stale that there is a very interesting prayer meeting held at the church every Wednesday night, and those who live tear town would enjoy it it' they would come.
