[From the Richmond Dispaftli.j Can tho Hoopla overoom > the oo | liorts of the corrupt party now in , power, and succeed in placing Tildon and Hendricks in tho offices of Presi dent and Vice President of the United States? The first answer to tlfis in quiry comes from every ton .quo in the words, “If wo cannot elect Tildon and Hendricks we cannot elect any body.’’ More than once before tho meeting of the Si. Louis I'onveniion we had occasion to say that wo did not know that the Dctnoetats o it’d elect TilJcn, but wo were confident that if they could elect anybody they could elect him. Our intercourse at St. Louis with people from different sections has led us to the conclusion that Tildon not only can be but will bo elected. Take the State of Wisconsin, with its teat electoral voles. Nobody in this section ever dreamed that the Democrats of that State entertained any hopes, of giving its electoral vote to the candidate of their party. Yet the delegates from Wisconsin de clared with almost one voice that if Ti.den were nominated he would cer tn n!\ carry that State. 2 hoy did not mto have a doubt r.p.-n ihe subject Tho reason given tie ; that, almost half the voters were Germans earnestly in favor of reform and hard money. Take Massaolmsetts, Tt is a State which we in Virginia concede to the Republicans, without a doubt that it. will go lor them. Yet Massachu setts two years ago elected to Con gress four Democrats and two Inde pendents (Banks and Seelye) to five Republic me, oren ll ao of the attempt of Grant to rule Louisiana by mili tary force. Now, if Grant shall at tempt to coerce the people of Florida, Mis'-c-stppi aud Louisiana into voting i for Ilayes, Massachusetts will almost certainly give her thirteen electoral votes to Tiiden and Hendricks. She js fired of ’.i.ilitui’ii.-iuL'- W-ÜBaut T.’l.ividi, Sontii Carolina, Mi:sissijipi and .Lo'.dsi; na, tho South can give TTien 111 votes. California, Ore gun, Nev da and Golo-ado will in- C tl'lV Mtl V to 122. - Yirk, Ne Jei ;-cy and Connecticut will i ; it. to 170, and Indiana wtl! ijjaffe i’. IPJ—a majovity of the elec toral Ciiiege. Now aid aL”.ss.:ic!)u aelts, which 7 i.detL .. ’d.almo.-1 stirely get if Grant, carries ! y i .ice t.fic fi'iic Suit!hern States named—they can be carried in no other way —and Tiiden will lmve 204 electoral votes. Thus, if Grant allows ilio Southern States to vote as they please, they will vote for Tiiden, and he will be elected; whilst if, ou the contrary, Grant com pels the four States named, to cast their votes to Hayes, Tiiden will be elected by perhaps a still larger ma jority than he will ret ivi if Grant shall let the Southern people vote as til- y desire to do. Tit j reader will notice that wo l ave included no doubtful Slates in our ; calculation —none that we concede to ' bo doubtful. I lore they arc —North-1 ern, Pacific and ii nithern States: Nc*v York j New Jcr.-ey.... , Connecticut.. “ i Indiana California ® Colorado ” '* . /aria ® ama • W AI o o Delaware ® Georgia * I Kentucky 1 - Maryland 8 ' North Carolina lf) Texas 8 Virginia West Virginia ° Total 191 Only 185 are necessary to a choice. Now, which State in the above list is doubtful? It does not include South Ca.olina, Florida, Louisiana or Mississippi, nor a single Northern State that can be considered decided ly Republican. Yet Colorado and Nevada may be omitted, and still there will be vot- * enough left to elect Tild. n and JL nfL', :s. Rut that is not all. Our friends claim Wi-iipo in, and, in the contin gency hereto!- h mentioned, M.t sa* cbusctls. Wo have several strings t our bow. 1.1:n i-, too, is consid ered as not by any means beyond li.c hope of u; ■ :.pti'n.
