When he told her she had ar rived at a sloic conclusion, she thought he meant hlio had told a story. —The mineral soring on Captain Dendy’s plantation is attracting some attention. Parties go there almost every evening. —The verses, “I love to steal a while a weigh,” are supposed to have been written by a grocer given to short measures. •—Bov. Walter Johnson and Capt. Font Grimes passed through Hamil ton last Monday en route for the Warm Springs. • Mr. Tom Hunt was in town this week in the interest of the Centennial Stores of W. A. Swift. Tom is a clever fellow, and represents a good house. —Appearances are deceitful. At camp meeting it is difficult to tel! from the background whether the man on the front seat is shouting glory or lias just sat down on a-tack. —The caterpillars have made their appearance on the plantation of Mr. Beach, and he says they have eaten all the top leaves from iiicotton. 1 his is the first crop, and the! second will hardly cornu soon enough lo do much damage, —The Central Hotel in Columbus is one of the best places lo stop in that city. Willie Mason is the clever and aceominodaling clerk, and will see that you are made comfortable. Don’t fad to slop aitne Central when, you visit, the ehy. —Our young friend Ben Kim brough has gone on a visit to W-arm Springs. lie is suffering wish a slight attack of “heart disease,’’ ami the springs is a good place (or those thus affected. C,\sir Meettinu.—The Campmi’ot iug by the colored people, at Ivings boro was largely attended, and on .Sunday there was alleast twenty-five hundred persons on the grounds, 'i he train brought out nine hundred and twenty-six from Columbus. It was an orderly and w ell behaved as sembly; no dificullies or anything of the kind occuring. Elders G. W. Gaines and S. W. Drayton were the big preachers of the occasion. We heard the sermon on Sunday night, ami it was a fine thing; he spoke in a clear forcable styje, and is well ed ucate'!. There w ere 32 accessions to the church. Elder Gaines is a fine singer and sang some very pretty pieces; all who heard him were par ticularly struck with “Hold the tori.” SnRGHUM. —It is very encouraging to see the amount of this cane that is being made into syrup. Several mills in this community are kept steadily in operation. Mr. Hardy Hobbs has been constantly at work with his mill for the past three or j tour weeks. He makes it very nice ly indeed. Messrs. Fitts & Toler, Mr. Matthews and others, have shown us some very fine samples, which equal in taste and co or, the finest Now Orleans syrup. This shows that the people are begining o realize that they must live at home. Medtcai, Students— Judge J. F. C. Williams has recieved from the Trustees of the Louisville Medical College, a benificiary Schollarship, which will be given to somo w orthy young man who wishes to obtain a medical education. Every dollar saved is an advantage, and by apply ing to Judge W illiams eighty dollars can ho saved. In connection with the above, we take occasion to state that a letter of recommenda ion from us will secure a Scholarship in that Institute. Personal.— Col. 11. It. Harris was in town last week. He came to see about appointing dt legates to the Ca det Convention, It seems there has bed' some unnecessary dissatisfac ion i in regard to it. Col. Harris will act ; impartially in the matter, and the i people of the District may rest assnr ! ed that the most meritorious will get j the app lintmcnt. Ui tH lis Do ngs. On last Sunday ijuirning tin. o deaths occtired within a few miles of Hamilton. Mr Albert Sanford, who was born in Habersham oounty, (la, and niov. cd to (his county about, twenty five years ago, died at his residence about 7 o’clock, of apoplexy. lie did a hard days work on Saturday, and was taken very sicK about o uV-Inck in the afternoon. His father died just m this way about ten years ago, and he has dreaded this manner ol death for sometime. Mr. Sanford was a goood man, and was a quiet in. nfensive citizen. Ho lias read the Bible through three consecutive limes, and was never known to me a profane word. lie leaves a large family of children. We tender the family our sympathy. Mrs. Susan Meadows, daughter of Maj. T. J. Doggettt, died Sunday morning near Smith’s X lioads, after a long and painful illness. She had a severe fall about four months ago and it was thought bad several ribs bro ken. Wi’li this, and lung disease, she died, leaving a family of three children, all of whom are about grown. Mrs. Meadows was a good Christian woman, about fifty years old, and has lived here in the county about thirty-five years. Mr. Turner Thornton, one of our oldest and most respectable citizens, died Sunday morning about 7 o’clock. He was taken witli billions colic, and lingered about eight days when death relieved him of his suffering. Mr. Thornton was a consislanl, stood man, much beloved and respected by all and is a great loss to his neighbor hood. He leaves a large fatuiy and many friends to mofirn his loss. Mrs. Girner died a few miles above Hamilton, last Monday. We have been unable to obtain the par ticulars of her death, further than that she had been sick for sometime. Levingston will take charge of a class of ladies and gentlemen, and teach tern to sing. It will be for the benefit of the Y. M. C. A., and only half rates will be charged. The first meeting will take place to night, aud it is hoped a large crowd will be in attendance. He is considered a good teacher. Tank Removed. —The tank on the N. & S Railroad lias been removed • from Fortson’s to Cataula, and will use water from the well.* This gives both sections of the road a tank, and will add very greatly to the couven iencofthe hands. | MARRIED.
