GAMBLE & COPELAND. A large assortment ot fresh crack ers, of every grade, at retail prices from 15c to 25c iust received at W. A. Swift’s Centennial Stores. Spe cial rates to wholesale dealers. Our friends in visiting Columbus will do well to call on Mr. Jfc Pirri, northeast corner of Oglethorpe and Randolph streets. Mr. Pirri keeps everything in the grocery line, and will sell as cheap as any other house in Golumbns. W. A. Swift is sole agent for the the celebrated Glknnwood Whiskey, the finest on the market, warranted pure, at prices from 13 50 to $5 per gallon. A rare article branded “Old Time,” five years old, for $8 50 per gallon. These goods are pure, and especially adapted to the wants of those wishing an article for medi cinal purposes. New Millinery Stoke. —Mrs. Howard, of Columbus, has every thing in her line to please the taste of the most fastidious. She offers special inducements to her friends, and guarantees her goods to be first class, and she will sell at very low figures. Be sure nd call on her when you want nice goods. Her Btore is next door to Gilbert’s print in'* office, on Randolph street, and nearly opposite the Post Office. j Onr Pap’r Aliroml. y The Geneva L'imp sny: “No one who knows the editor ot tho Hamil ton Journal is at all surprised that he should support the nominee of the West Point caucus. Eugene favors concusses, simply because they are labor saving institutions, and ho thinks it'wrong to do nnytlting that anybody else is willing to do for biro. Why he believes in this to such an extent that many, very many of his local notices are written for and pub'ished in the New York news papers.’’ ® brother Dennis dues ns proud, and we appreciate the high compli ment paid us. We have always nd vocated “consistency to be a jewels" and we could not, with consistency, do otherwise than support the nom inee. It flatters our vanity to know that our local notices are copied in the New York papers, and particu larly to have them illustrated, as wife the case a few weeks since. Mark One for Eu.ersub.— Up to date we ’nave refrained from tell ing any snake tales, but 6tich a good one comes from Ellerslio that we can not resist tlie temptation of laying it before our leaders. A gentleman heard his hounds running something which he thought to be a rabbit, but the continued yelling of the hounds caused him to change his opinion, so ho saddled bis horse and put out for u fox chase. The dogs ran for two hours when they caught the varmint which nroved to be a black runner, commonly called a coach-whip. The snake got away from the dogs and ran so far ahead that they could not overtake him again. Some of the most reliable gentlemen of Ellerslie vouch for the telling of the above story, That snake was a stunner. Harb to Bf.at.—The following results were obtained by Mr. E. Sauls, of this place, from the cultiva tion of one and a quarter acres’ near ly ali bill-side land: Fiftybusliels of corn, fifty bu-hels of Irish potatoes, six bushels of onions and about a wagon load of pumpkins, besides spinage, turnips, cabbage and other vegetables suflieient. for bis family nnd some to sell, lie ides this be lias a fine crop of peas on his land now. lie says he could have raised double ibis amount if lie bad had a mark el for it. Off of this acre and a quarter lie makes enough to support his fam ily, feed a horse and cu\v and calf, and a hog wliioli w ill make ins nje.it for lu-xt year. Certainly Mr. S.nils should have the banner. — [Fruu/cliti At’tcs. A Gfvilk Lux. —This, from Hie Wam-iiton ( Upper, ought to bring forth the requisites alluded to, else “man’s inhumanity to man” is worse than we have eu|>po-ed: “Gentle reader, placid devourer of brain siffctillations, do you owe us a dollar, or do you owe us two? W here is that wood that was to properly stew, ).:u--boil or roast our mutinal hash? Where are !i oe potatoes that were to be ours ‘tl e very first digging?’ Where, oh, where, has gone that, limo-encised lien fruit that was to nog us when cool mornings came? and where, yes, wc repeat, where are those fa*, turkeys that was to be ‘fetch in’ as soon as grasshoppers got ripe enough to fallen them? Can you put your hand on your first vest button from the top. and, looking us square in a sore eye, ans aer these interrogations? We opine i.ot.” A New Firm. — Anew firm has been formed in Columbus under the name of Blanchard & Ilill. They are in tho dry goods business, and propose to keep a first-class house. Anything in the dry goods line can be purchased at their store, at the very bottom prices for the cash. Mr. Blanchard is a former resident of Harris county, and hopes his numer ous friends in this section will not fail to give the new firm a trial before purchasing elsewhere. They are both young men, of large experience in the business, and are reliable in every sense of ihe word. Read their advertisement. Shirt Factory. Columbus is bound to be the manufacturing city of tbe South. Nothing can keep her from it, for ail of her natural advan tages point that way. Yesterday Mr. Warwick, from Canada, was looking through the city with a view of locating a wholesale shirt manu factory. He could not have found a better place, as here lie can get labor cheaper than in the North, and who, under skilled management, do better work. We hope Mr. Warwick will find it to his interest to locate among us. — lColumbus Times. The Columbus Times has anew head which improves its appearance very much. Local Hriffs. —Fresh Cream Cheese of the best quality for Rale at the Centennial Stores at 20c per pound. —Prof. Lev ngston’s music class is progressing rapidly. Hamilton will soon have a firstrate choir. —We call special attention lo the fact that W. A. Swift is agent for tho “Old Time’’ whiskey. It is live years old and a pure article. The leader of the Catania S. I), was in our office yesterday. He an ticipates attending a wedding soon, and already looks spruced up. -'-W. A. Swift at the Centennial Stores is now selling new Pearl Grits at Cos pounds for one dollar. Taylor’s' Soap at 10 bars lor one dollar. Bng giug 10c, Ties Sc. —And now ye possttnt hunter winds the mellow horn, nnd ye hounds howl to the music thereby. Moral-Look out for ye potato palchis and ground peas. —The belle of the 10th, in compa ny with Miss Dennis, one of Talbot tons accomolished belles, were in town last Sunday. Talbottop is pro verbial for pretty young ladies. —We have the promise of a po tato that weighs 8 pounds. It wus raised above the mountain, and when it comes we will invito n committee to make affidavit to its weight. —W. A. Swift, at the Centennial Stores, keeps constantly on hand, a full line of whiskies from &1 25 to $2 per gallon. Sherry and Catawba wines; Cherry and Blackberry bran dies. —Mr.O.C. Johnson, who has trav eled considerably ia tbe North, in speaking of the political canvass says that be is decidedly of the opinion that somebody wants office, —The election blacks arc at, the office of the Ordinary and caw be ob tained by applying for them. Said and iret them at once so as to have them ready, by the 7ih of November, —We understand the matrimonial waters are lo Ire troubled at Waverly Ilall this week. Mr. Jack Helms is to marry a young lady in Talbot county, Mr. Tim Murphy marries a Miss Lawson ot that neighborhood. —The y ting man who accompa nied the “wheel-rider’' to Columbus says that toothc-aehe don’t hut worth a cent compared to chopping a In it tie on a sore toe. There seems to Vie but little pay in “indulging just a little.” .—A little “benzine” makes a fel low feel like he “could remove moun tains,'’ but it is useless for him to try to ride a wagon wheel while it is in rno ion. A young mm at Catania t.iied it last week and pronotmccs it a decided failure, No bones broken. —We stated a short time since that Mr.Gamble presented the lamps so the Baptist church. Mr. Copeland was equally interested in presenting them. We were not informed of this at the time but gladly make the correction, and again suggest the liberality of tbe young firm. —Let all who want cheap and good dry goods go to J. Albert Kir vens, where they will find attentive salesmen. He has a largo stock of Zephr Woo’s in desirable shades. Ladies can rclv on getting any shade they wish, Table Damask, Towels and Napkins, The best stock in the city at J. Albert Rirvens. —To give ot dinary water all the refreshing and invigorating qualities of sea water, salt it till it lias a buoy ant feeling—which shows how easy it is to get np a buoyant feeling. Salt will do it sometimes; but the most effectual way of producing it in the farm]y is to plant a “Light-Run ning Domestic” square in front of the hearth-stone. The Fort Valley Mirror makes representations with an exactness that is astonishing. 1 h:s is the way he talks about Hamilton cats: “Tbe young ladies of Hamilton carry their pet cals to church. As soon as one c?t spies another, it saj>! ‘Wh'-ge b-c-y are y-o-u?’ Replies: ‘l’m my rna’s boy 1* In about two minutes you can see tlic fur flying around like lint cotton coming out of a sixty saw gin. Each girl will bet a naper of pins when she gets borne that her cat licked the other like the dickens!” Si.vf4F.it Machine. —The Singer is still triumphant. Rend the latest tel egram: “The very highest honors w hich could be conferred on any ex hibitor—two medals of honor and two diplomas of merit—havo been awarded the Singer Manufacturing Company for Sowing Machines.” Mr. Chas. S. Holt is tiie Agent at Co lumbus, and will take pleasure in serving his friends and all customers. Rrdtftion in Boirtl. Single meals 50c. MBS. F. M.GIIAY, Proprietress, Mr. James Pearson, of E ponton, lias made four, hundred bushels of corn, and twenty-six bales of cotton with two horses, lie is a good farm er and his example is worth imitating. The Columbus Times gives the farmers at Catania a heavy local. It says that all of them have made eight or ten barrels of syrup each, and most of them have It for sale. Gee whilikins! Did yon tell that Unfits? The gin of J. TANARUS, Lowe Bros,, in Douglass county, caught lire on Monday last, and .ten or fourteen bales of cotton was burned up. The origin of the fire is unknown. No insurance. The- Carrollton 'Times says the gin house of Win. Dorris was burned on the 10th itist. Eight or ten bales of cotton was consumed w nil it. The gin wtts running at tho time, nnd the fire is supposed to have been caused by the igniting of a match in the seed cotton. Tho Tliomasviko Times says many of tiie bust colored men in Thomas county will vote in the November election with their truo friend*, the wlii o men ot the county. Many more will stay away fiotn tho polls, having become disgusted with radi cal promises. This is sensible. The Fort Valley Mirror is.resnon-.i ble for the statement that the lTi'* on Mr. Davidson’s place have rooted up and devoured a patch of potatoes containing about one-fourth of an acre. The patch is situated near the cnb, and the rats can bo seen at any time during the day rooting and eat ing potatoes. " ’Squire J. M. Will brother Sharpe p'ense rise to explain. A IJi'o’e reader has discovered the fact that Lazarus was a poor man. and the cause of his skirmishing around after crumbs was owing to the loci tli.it they didn’t give a y free lunches in those days. Ho also discovers that Job was possessed with so much ontience that you might stick pins in him nil day, and he wouldn’t boiler. Pkitsovai.,-i —Col, O. C. He i* now travel ing for the cutlery house of N. Finn, New York. Johnson is tho same clever fellow of former time*, and his aider* and New York “touch up” only adds a charm to his dignity, Mr. J. O.
