—The people of Harris county
want peace, quiet and a good, free
government.
-IV e see it stated in one of our
exchanges that Mr. Hilliard has re
tired from politics for tho present.
By tho way, who is Mr. Hilliard ?
—The editor of this Journal
wants a groat many subscribers, and
money in proportion, that lie may bo
able to assist in securing to the peo
ple, for all the future, a good, free
government.
—The Amateur lias put on anew

rings ils accustomed song of “The

reference to Kendrick.
—Prepare your torches for Friday

“If you don’t use them in the proces

lllumination is the order of the

the political sky, ami it is the request
of the town committee that citizens

Prof. Lallattc has made a faithful

The Atlanta Constitution has
these items:

Tuggle went home happy to La
grange. In the campaign in the fourth
district he won the title of the “Sun

One of the republicans yesterday
said he felt Darn-’ill, while George
Washington Flournoy said that be
told the republicans they would be
defeated if they didn’t give him the
Atlanta post office.

ing:

Orange Affairs.
I he Grange is becoming a veteran
organization. Next Wednesday the
tentli nntiu.il session of the national
body will lie convened at Chicago;
but only three of those conventions
have held siuce the order began to
over-shadow tho land. The St-
Louis convention of 187.1 put the
business arm in operation and adop
ted a good declaration of principles.
It is a matter of regret now amongst
tho million of members that the
Charleston and Louisville conven
tions did not carry forward the work
on the line projected at St. Louis.
Apathy prevails in the subordinate
granges, to that extent, indeed, that
the Louisville Courier-Journal does
not hesitate to assert that in Romo
states hnrdly half of them are alive.
The blame is put, and wo believe
upon the national grange. It lias not
accompanied of lute anything worthy
of mention, it has not rid the fanners
of any of
carried out, nor attempted to carry
out, the S:. Louis declaration.
So disgusted is the St. Louis
Journal of Agriculture with the
national grange that it proposes to
make its se-sions triennial, and that
each state shall pay Ihe expenses of
its own delegates to the national
congress. It seems that tho annual
meeting costs about 820,000, and
that mo dues from tho state do not
at present cover one-half of this
amount. In other words, tho surplus
of s'o,ooo will soon be used up, and
bankruptcy will follow unless a
ckango of some kind is brought
aiiout.
As soon os the national grange arl
j'lurns, preparations will begin for
the nunual meetings of the slate
granges. On tho twelfth of next
moiuii no less than fourteen of these
bodies, including those of Georgia,
Alabama and Florida, will he in ses
sion. There is no question hut tin t
the grange has reached a crisis in ils
career. It will either disappear or
lake on new life after the meeting
that occur in tho remaining weeks
of this year. Timely and vigorous
action is needed now in the vast
membership to ward off dissolution.
