Board of Trustees, * Church Notice. —The Fourth Quarterly Conference of the Ilatnil ton Circuit will be held in Hamilton,- embracing the Ist Sabbath snd Sat urday before in December. May God meet with us and bless us. G. S. Johnston, Pastor, No.tember 14tb, 1876. Local Briefs. —Weit?tit for the wagon— a load of wood. Let ns sing. —All men are not homeless, but some men are homo less tlum others. —We notice that the fall style ot oaths is the same as s-worn Inst year —Mebbe sombody don’t wos got sonnlings new by dot election, anyhow! —The Cantata is in fall blast, and a tine treat is in store tor those who attend. —Tas Torch-liglit Procession was a grand success notwithstanding tho weather was very unfavorable. —Capt. Benj. Kimbrough has a cat that drink* water out of a tumb ler witli ius hands. lie will vouch for it. —There is a lady living in Hamil ton, and has lived hero for the past twenty years, who was nover in any of the stores, —Nothing in the world will more quickly inspire a boy with a desire for Bible teaching than the approach of the Christmas tree season. —Judge Kunorough was attacked by a severe spell of something simi lar to paralysis yesterday, and is still quite sick, though improving. —Messrs. Gamble & Copeland have put a sewer from the corner of their store emptying into the street ieading out to the CYmetary This was a good idea. —Mistakos will happen in the best regulated families, and when a young lady sweetens the coffee with salt instead of sugar, it is no sign that she is not domestic. —A woman was burned to death by the explosion of a lamp not long since, and an exchange, in noticing it, says that nothing has benzuio of her since. —A report reached Hamilton yes terday that someone had stolen a wagon and pair of mules from Mr. John Toler the night before. Also that a bale of cotton was stolen from Nr. Nathan Passmore’s place. —The editor of the Amateur and Bobby Pius are on the best of terms since bis recent visit, but Bob’s Uncle don’t like the signs of the times. Tins world is full of rivalry and the Captain must grin and bear it. —A negro who live* mnio distance in the country w:i* no busy picking cotton that he did not have time to vote, tmt sent his tax receipt think ing it would count one more for Mr. Whays and lleuler. —lt is hard to tell which is the meanest ot the two —the ono who slander*, or the one who listens to slander. Some great man lias said that one ought to be hung by the tongue, the other by the ear. One of our moat prominent and thoughtful citizens carried a bundle of old vouchers instead of a package ot mopey to Columbus to settle his accounts. lie did not discover the mistake until lio wa* preparing to fettle a bill. lie was’nt fretted any worth mentioning. The Town Committee requests ua to return thanks to 51 rs. Col. Mob ley and Misses Fannie Mitchell, Jim mie Mobley, Charlotte Schley, Emma and Fannie Johnson, for their kind ness in making the beautiful flag used on the occasion ot the Torch light Procession. Personal. — Willie Slade, the popular and taleated editor of the Amateur , was in town la-t Friday night to participate in the jolifioation, From the way he was flying around with one of the fair Hamiltonians, it is reasonable to suppose that the Antigonean is in a fair way to he cntp*>ut. We look lor Willie back soon, and if she ain’t glad to see him we will be. Minister Chosen. —Rev. A. 13. Campbell, of Amerlcus, has bean unanimously chosen pastor of the Baptist Church in Columbus, and has accepted the call. He will enter upon the duties of regular pastoral work on the first of January, and will in the meantime devote most of his time to the church. He is an eloquent preacher and a most excellent man. The church has been very fortunate in securing hi* services. In a Bad Condition. —The Os*a halchee bridge on the Hamilton and Columbus road is in a very bad con dition, and is quite dangerous for a load wagon to pass. One of the sleepers has entirely rotted out, and the others are very weak. We un derstand that the Commissioner are ready to let it out and are now wait ing for someone to take the con tract, Those who cross it even on horseback had best be careful. TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION. The Display Friday Night. Notwithstanding the woalher wan exceedingly inclement, a large crowd assembled in Hamilton last Friday night for the purpose of celebrating the recent Democratic victories, and particularly that of Georgia. It was a celebration in honor of the largo popular majority received by Tilden and Hendricks, the re-election ot lion Henry It. Harris to Congress, as well as the entire Georgia delegation, the local victories throughout the Uni ted States and particularly Soutli Carolina. tiik ruocussiox was formed in the grove in front of Turner’s Hotel, and marched down Broad Street to the southern part of town, then back again to Church Street opposite Robinson’s Hotel, and into tho Court House. The procesion was saluted with cheers, waving hankcrchiefs, and booming cannons as they passed along. The torches were thrown together in the Court House yard and all inarched inside the house, when CAPT. L L. STANFORD was loudly called for and responded in a beautiful speech of twenty min utes length. The Captain lost none of his reputation as a fine orator, and we regret that the want of space for bids our giving a full report of what he said. lie was loud in the praise of “Uncle Sam.” and it did his heart good to rejoice over our victory. He was loudly cheered all the way through his speech, and took his scat amid tremendous app'ause. COI,. J. M. MOHLEY was then called for and as he ascend ed the stand the house rang with applause. Col. Mobley began speak ing under the disadvantages of a se vere headache, but many said that it was the best eff >rt of his life, and we are ready to agree with them, He touched very feelingly upon tho memory of tho late ltev. Mr. J. Wellborn, and the many other re nowned statesmen and public men whose voice had been heard in those walls, but are now bushed in the silent toomb. lie then proceeded to show the advantage* accruing from the election of Tilden, but we have not the space to follow him through, Hu wound up hi* remarks with a eulogy on the people of old Harris and had not the walls been substan tial, they would certainly have t mubled in. PROF. <!. !. LAHATTE was called for and cheer after cheer rang out as lie came to the stand. The Professor thought there was much over which to rejoice, and that people should rejoice and be glad, lint there wax also a shade of sadne s which would rreep even into joy we exnefienee, when the thought that Grant, the Executive of a great Re public, would sloop to such low and vile measures in an attempt to de fraud the people of the United .States out of their choice of a ruler.' FLAG PRESENTATION. Capt. Stanford in belmlf of the Journal office, in a very neat and appropriate address, presented Ca tania District with a Centennial Flag in honor o f their having given Tilden and Hendricks and Harris the largest majority of any District in the coun ty. The Flag was received by T. 11. K.IMIIROUGII, ESIJR , in behalf of Catania. Ho said that Catania was ever ready and willing to do her duty without the promise of reward, and disclaiming any credit to himself he would accept the flag for his District, who, when it came to a Democratic fight, would never let it trail in the dust. He re gretted that he did not havp an op portunity of thanking the patriotic young ladies who made the flag. Mr. Kimbrough took his seat amid hearty cheers for Cataula. RESIDENCE* ILLUMINATED. Those of Mr. J. T. Johnson, Col. J. M. Mobley and Itev. G. 8. Johnston were beautifully illuminated, and the beauty of it is it was done bv the young ladies. The gentlemen bad gone up town to join in the jollifica tion, and the young ladies enthused with patriotism illuminated their res idence', and as they were two-stories high it was not a light task.We will place the young ladies of Hamilton against any town in the United States when it comes to lovliness, patriotism and anything else that is good. ALL SERENE. There was no disturbance ns too often is the case on such occasions. Everybody seemed bent on having u good time and lending a helping hand to others to do likewise. The crowd dispersed about 11 o’clock, all concedeing that the “Torch-light Procession” w'as a grand success Now is the time to pay your sub scription lO the Jot'KNAL. MARRIED. Brooks— -Uuiunsun.—At tht* rt violence of the brides father, Mr. It. \Y. Robinson, on the Kith Inst, by tho l!ev. 11. Caimicheal, Mr. John Brooksand Miss Ciutiic Robinson. We extend to the happy eonpie our wannest congratulations, and wish them a long fifo of conjugal happiness. Rttiunion in Hoard. Rankin lloixk, ) Columbus, Ga., Oct. 8, 1876. J Front this dato and until further notice the rates of board at this House will bo $2, $2 50 and $3 per day, according to size and location of room. Single meals 50c. MRS. K. M.GRAY, The Cantata.— We learn that the Cantata will come off at tho College on tho evening of (he Btb of De cember. Wo have attended one of the rehearsals, and front the manner in which it is to lie gotten up are fully persuaded that it will be a grand affair. The object of it will bo for the purpose of assisting in buying n bell lor tho College, and in order that all may have an opportunity of at tending, the price of admission will be put at the low price of twenty five cents. We hope soon to be able to give the programme in fit. Hard to Beat. —Our friend, Mr. Reuben Mobley, complimented the Journal office with half a dozen sweet potatoes that averaged three and three fourth pounds in weight. ; also with same number of turnips, average weight four ami one fourth pounds. The potatoes were of the San Domingo yam variety ; the tur nips, rutabagas—both were about the finest specimens of vegetables wo have ever seen. Who can beat it ? Mr. Mobley lias proven that the San Domingo yam is a perfect suc cess. Wc return him our thanks for his kind remomberanco of us. • I low 11 tc got a New Hat.—lver son Smith, a negro who lives on Mr. G. A- Granberry’s plantation near Catania, has voted the Democratic ticket for the past four or live year*. A few days ago he w as in Columbus and was wearing a hat that had seen bolter days. Thu Senior proprietor of one of the best business houses in the city did not think it was altogether as good a hat as a Demo’ c.'atic negro ought to wear, and re quested one of his clerks to put a new one on him. There is not a better negro in the country than Iverson, and will ben hard maMor to persuade him that the white people are not his best friends. New Goods Coming In.— Messrs. Gamble & C pehinil are receiving a lot of new goods. Monday they re ceived a large lot of shoes, of the very best make in the market. Anion); the lot we noticed T. Miles it Son’s elegant Calf, Goal, Foxed and Lasting ladies Gaiters. Also a fine lot ol L. Hoyden it Son’s latest styles of gentlemen’s Gaiters, which they have marked down very low. They keep constantly on hand a full line of Dress Goods, Notions of all kinds, Domestic goods of all grades and prices, and a splendid line of Groceries, such as Bacon, Lard, Flour, Sugar, Coffee, and anything in the Grocery lino. Call and see them, as they do not consider it a trouble to show llieir goods. Col. W. O. Tuggle speaking in Greenville prior to the late election while 7it the subject of stale extrava gance, said that lie had been reliably informed that a clerk in the late House of Representative*, Georgia Legidattire, had received regular pay and performed but few days work, while another had been pair) for forty days w ork and had been at home, twenty miles from Atlanta, the whole time—had received pay for forty days work while he had done nothing save receiving the appoint ment as clerk.
