At a season of the year when the
li oys are out of school, they are tax
ing their w its to tho utmost tension
to find something to do to procure
pocket-money, if not to assist their
parents. One of the happiest and
most original devices for this end
that it has been our chance to hear
of, is that of a lad who invaded
Brooklyn, and, noticing the unusual
number of kcrosine lamps in use in
that city, he solicited the job of tak
ing care of the same lor several store
keepers. His price was modest—
ten cents per week for each lamp—
for which sum he agreed to trim and j
keen clean tho lamp, brush out the
chimney, etc. llis success surprised i
him. He soon had fifty lamps to
look after, and then his work increas
ed so that he engaged an assistant,
‘ paying him a stated salary, ana he as
“boss,” took the orders. This young
man has the care of several hundred
lamps on Fulton street atone. Ills
weekly income and profit amounts to
twenty-five dollars, which is far bit
ter than running errands or tending
stores, as many lads do in tho city
fur a pittance of two or three dollars
a week.
