A3 CAUGHT ON THE KI.T. —The sun showu out bcautilnlly yesterday. —Mr. Lilly Kimbrough is in town, lie leaves for White Sulplicr to day. —The “small fry ’’ enjoyed a Racial gathering Wednesday night at Mr. John T. Williams’. —Mr. J. W, Storey arrived yester day from Jonesboro. lie will re main only a day or two in order to settle up his business. —J...W. Grant como near jetting hi* foot cut off last Tuesday. He was standing on a Jog cutting when the ax glanced and struck his loot —i-Last Sunday was a splended day for staying iu the housa, hut if tho preachers got any body to go to church, we failed to heat of it. —Rev. Mr. Houck, a blind preach er. had an appointment t> preach at the Baptist church last Monday night, but the weather was too un favorable fora congregation. - TheTalbotton Standard is now one of our best exhanges, and we have some good ones. Mumford is a “whale” by himself, and now that Joddy Dennis is with him they make a pulling tu am. Success to them -—We are tin iblo to learn who has been elected Senntor. At a late hour yesterday Messrs. Stanford and Do zier were voting for Hill and Mr Hudson was voting forSm'th. Tom Hunt, Esq,, of Columbus, arrived late last night nnd will re main several days. He has been quite sick for the past few weeks nnd we hope the salubrious up country will be benifioial to him, —Some of our knowing ones re member that in 1856 wo had just, such a spell of weather as has been visited to us for the past few weeks. Wo have hardly age enough on our side to remember that far back, but. will leave the question open for dis cussion. • —The roads from Hamilton to Kingslioro, and in fact all through the country, is almost impassible. In many places the mud is up to the hubs and the axeltree gets down into it. If tho railroad was ever needed to bo finish to Hamilton and to Ghipley now Is the tunc. —The oat crop has beon sftrinusly injured through this county, by tho late “unpleasantness” and the wheat crop has also received a considerable backset, but Ims not sustained so much injury as tho oats. Many o* the farmers think the c*at crop w4!l be a failure. —We notice iu the hand book of Georgia, that the Mulberry creek falls 240 ft to the mile, and an approxi mate he ad of 6,000. This is tho first wc have heard of any survey of tho creek. Two men came to Johnson’s mil!, looked at tho creek, said it wtt* too full for measuruent and went away We suppose they could tell from the looks of things that it would fill 240 feet to the mile, and therefore we may take the information as authen tic. Proof. —Just as the printers in the Journal office were getting ready to go to press; one of them let slip a galley in which were two col umns of type, ready for the lorm, and pied the whole galley. lie didn’t even B3y a cuss word, and we are now prepared to put the Journal office against any in the State for morality If a printer won’t say cuss words when he pies two col umns, then he can safely be put down as proo£ The Nursery —This is a monthly magazine for young readers, and is published by John L. They go from the fact that thoy obtained situations that is more lucrative, and with them they carry the best wishes of many friends from this section. Capt. Hines Holt is now conductor on the North and South and is a polite, courteous and accommodating young man. Mr. Cnas. Last year it was a difficut matter to g"t a good house in Hamilton, and now while business has increased, there are several nice dwelling houses vacant. They will probably he fiiled as soon as the weather moderates. Hon- L. L. SiiUiioid on Hill / rr- # Injresponse to a communication from several gentlemen, asking him to use his influence tor Mr. Hill for United States Senator, Ca;>t. Stanford has addressed them as folio as: sc/? State of Georgia, ) House of Represent ativs. f Atlanta, Jan. 18, 1877. To N. n. Birden, J. F. C. Williams, IjjW. W. Goodman, Joseph Miller and others. Gentlemen : Your polite note of the 12th,is before me, requesting that in the election of United States Sena tor, I east my vole for the lion. B. FI. Hill. I shall, tnost cordially com ply with your wishes, beloiving that by so doing, I shall reflect the will of a very large majority of my con stituents. YVe need an faille expo nent of consli utional liberty in the Senate, just at this particular time, to tackle the champions of Radical ism, to refute their falacious argu ments, to expose their hellish purpo ses to the just contempt and scorn of the world. Air, Hill is the only man in Geor gia that can do this. Air. IJill is fully in accord and sympathy with the Democratic party; and no patriot in the nation would rejoice more than lie at the triumph of that party in its present struggles for victory. Fernando YVood anil other great exponents of Democratic principles fully exonerate Air. Hill from the many and vile partasau attacks made upon his political career. They say ho is sound in the faith —in harmony with the Democratic party. Yol may rest assured that I never “go back” on my friends. Every instinct of my nature prompts me to act from principle, to be true to my friends, faithful to my promises and devoted to my country. I have but one purpose in view, and that is to servo my country patriotically, to illustrate the name of my family for honesty and integrity in every pro fessien of life- I shall do this to the best of my abilty, while a member of the Georgia Legislature, I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient servan*, L L. Stanford, Much Bkttbk —-By a private let ter from Prof. J. T. Lunar, wo learn that Mrs. Lamar is improving in health, and is steadily recovering from her late severe ill .css. This will be very gratifying intelligence to tho many friends of the Professor iu ibis section. Ho was to have re turned last night, and w o guess did so, and w ill resume his school next Monday. Pbaixy Funny. —The Columbus Enquirer says a Senator, chairman of a committee, has boon an. horizxl to employ an architect to examine that shackling ex-opera house, now o and report on its safe ty. The p. oplo in this section are somewhat curious to know what tho Superintendent, of Public Works hns been doing all this time, lie prompt ly drew his salary.
