knowledge, received any injury in
retaliation for the death of any dog.
The plan is just and right, and every

How to Keep Sweet Potatoes-
I have found tbe following plan to
be successful in Ncbrnaka, says a
correspondent of the I'rarie Farmer.
First dig your potatoes and let them
lie in the sun until thsy are dry.
Second, have a ready p t sufficiently
a-ge to hold what potatoes, you
wih to keep ever. Put in the bot
tom of the *it six indies of straw,
and then put in your potatoes, and
cover them lightly with straw, and
let them stay three or four daya,
until they they go through the
“awca then put on mors straw
and a light covering of dirt. As the
weather gels colder, put on mon
cover—enough to keep them warm.
I have kept my potatoes in that way
jo'"* number of years, and never
failed. The potatoes should not be
alloweil to touch the earth. Keep
your straw and chaff tucked around

SCRIBNER’S MONTHLY roit 1877.
The publisher* Invite attention to the fol

cecured for Scribner's Monthly lor the com
ing year In the field of fiction, he-ide* nu
merous novelettes and shorter stories, there
will he two remarkable serial stories by Am
erican authors. Tliv first of tin sc, now com
plete in onr bund*. Gabriel Conroy, by Brel
H üb-, begins in the Novianber number, and
will run twelve months. This is Mr Harte’s
first ext< nded work. The scenes and charac
ters, which the author has chos'-n from his
favorite field, California, are painted with
characteristic vividness ami power, and th
w nk is doubtless the most graphic record 01
cirly California life that has yet appeared.
We shall also begin, in the January nmo
her, Philip Nolan’s Friends, or Show Your
Passports, l>y Edward Everett Hale. 'I he
scene of this story is laid in the South western
territory, now forming the States of I-onisi
nna aud Texas, ai the time of Aaron Burr's
treason. Hie characters lived in a section
which wia now American, now French, and
now Spanish, and this record of their adven
turous lives makes a story of intense and uu
flagging interest throughout.
A second Farmer’s Vacation, try Col Geo
E Waring, Jr. Col Wailng is now in Eu
rope, visiting, in a row-boat ride of 250 miles,
onr| if the most fertile ami interesting of the
vine growing valleys of Europe. This sec
ond series of papers promises to lie even more
interesting than that with which our readers
are already familiar.
Centennial Letters, edited by John Vance
Cheney. A rare collection of Kevoliilinuary
letters, mainly from stores in the hands of
the descendant* of Col Joseph Ward. They
are full of interest, and will he read with a
rare relish in connection with the Centennial
celebration of the year.
Brilliantly illustrated articles on American
colleges, written respectively by their friends,
will appear during the year. The revived
interest in college life makes these papers es
pedally timely, and will secure for them uu
usual attention.
Elegantly illustrated articles on Old New
York, by John F Mines, will appear at once,
and will attract the attention of all, in city
or country, who mark with interest the de
velopment of the gieat metropolis, and affec
tionately remember the quaint peculiarities
o its olden titne.
Every nntalier Is profusely illustrated, thos
enabling us to give to our descriptive and
narrative articles an Interest and permanent
value never attained in a uon-tllustrated pe

the magazine will in the future be devoted,
as it lies been in the ist, to sound literature
and Christian progress.
