Nellie Ramsey's Balmorals'
EY HKSTFR E. SHIPLEY.
“Ido believe it's going to mint"
exclaimed Nett id Rnmscy. With
t/urt ngreeublo addition to the mo
notony of Ibis little village, we shall
have an enviable yule-tide.”
She drummed an impatient tattoo
upon the win.low..pane as she said
l his, watching the whit 1 of tbevlead
loves iu ilie bitter December blast,
and the drift of the leaden clouds
above.
“Idon’t think we will have rain!”
replied Kiltie Ragland, coming to
her side and peering out at the
dreary prospect. “Too cold fur
that; it looks like snow to me; and
if we should have a snow—a real
good snow—‘wnat larks!’’’
O
“Well, if we don’t have snow, or
something, I shall positively die
of ennui before me w eek is over.
We had much better have stayed in
Charleston—we could have kept
ourselves alive by shopping lor
Christmas gifts. Kittle, ar > there
any available beaux about here?”
“None.”
“ 2’hdt is distressing. Rut sure
ly the tow n can’t he in irely devoid
ol the sex. Ii I thought so I would
just ‘sot in to toveu’ around,’ as
Sut Lovitigood would say, until 1
drummed up one.’’
“You won’t be driven to that
extremity, poor child; there are
half a dozen mile midgits, a frowsy
lawyer or two, and a grumpy doc
tor, who might answer an occasion;
but as for a beau—a real nice beau
to flirt wub, who parts his hair in
the middle and talks poetry —he
isn’t to be found in these'parts. ”
“Ah ! well, we will make the most
of w hat the gods allow. You can

“And )i av. *> • -

“Don’t b uncivil, Kiltie; I shall

I shall have some fun— /tote ii shall

“I don’t think you know whai
ma uner of man iris you propose to
amuse yourself wi h, Nettie. Do
you know, my sanguine friend,- '.his
doctor of ours never speaks to a
lady except under pro’est, unpro..
fessionally, of course. Rut wheth
er this line of conduct arises from
excessive modesty or excessive ill
will toward the fair sex, I am unable
to slide. Asa special act of grace,
he has deigned to accept an invita.-
tiorv to our party to-morrow night.”
Ah! the fates are propitious;
what shall I do to draw this oyster
from his she!! ? W hat—shall I
do? ’’
And Nettie walked back and
forth with a pretty air of perplexity;
her little white hands clasped be
hind her, and bright b'ueeyes look
ing into “futurity,” Sally II agios
like.
“Eureka!” and she whirled rapid
ly around with the grace of bouyarn
seventeen. “Kittio, lam going to

“Why, Nettie!”
“Well, Kitue ”
“You don’t know him at ah.”

HAMILTON, HARRIS CO., GA„ FRIDAY, JANUARY'4. 1878.
“I can see him now—lone old
bachelor in his sanctum —pipe,
books, dogs, dirt, etc ; enter darkey
with a package and note; heavens
and earth!—what is this?—stock
ings!! Indies’ halniorals! !*’ and
Nerie—heedless, willful Nettie
burst out laughing again.
“ >Yell, they laugh best who laugh
last,’’said Kiltie, forebodingly,
Nettie seated herself with her desk
on her knee and began to write.
“Here it is, Kittie--brevity is the
soul ot wit, you know:
“Dear Santa, be sure to fill them;
A.”
“lie will never think of my name
being Antoinette.’’
“If you will wire 'goose’ after
the A., he will not fail to recognize'”
“Reserve your sarcasm for your

“And my laughter for yon when

Partly as Nettie Ramsey had pic

room, pipe, books, dog, but not

twi-light closed in; sat, smoked,
and tnoughf, while the half lights
deepened in the room u"til gro

danced about the walls, and the
snow fell soft and white without,
The dooi opened; then followed the
steps of a servant, or what lie look
for one, lor he said:
“No lights, Torn—the fire-light
will answer.”
Then the step withdrew.
But, then there is an end, sooner
or later, to oil tilings—particularly
pleasant ones—and Dr, Winston,
having exhausted the contents of hi*
pipe, came out ot his reverie, went
to a t ible, his catch- ill, and begin
to fnm' le among the chaotic mass
for his pouch. Very soon his hand

one of amusement fluted over his

“A? ”
He ran over the whole list of A’s
of his acquaintance, not one of

“Oh! I have it—those mud-cap
girls at Henry’s! I must say I am
surprised at Ileleu to permit it. Let
me see —Jliss Ramsey—Miss Let
tie; no, Nettie and Kiltie; they did
it, I havi n’t a doubt - ”
A gleam of merriment shot from
his dark..'gray eye as thus, solilo
quizing, he held up the bulmonds
for inspection. They w ere not fai
ry-uke in proportion —good siz and
nines—and had never been
worn. He turned them about; he
laughed, then he sighed.
“I’ll be even wi’b you, Mi-s
Nettie,” he said, and having found
the missing pouch, icsuined his
pipe and his reverie,

remembered it, Neitie, with just a
of regret, and Ivitiie, with a
wonder as to how it would end.

The truth is Ki,tic’s conscience
did not. exactly endorse her pro

to see the grumpy doctor before
Nettie should do so.
In most Non hern conn y bouses,

She paused oil the threshold, g ive

then another more interne, then
ran shaking with laughter, to Nettie
and her unfinished toilette.
“Olt ! Nellie, do come and see

“your stockings arc stuffed as full
