HAMILTON, HARRIS COUNTY, GEORGIA, APRIL 29, 1880.
No Third Term.
Pbiledelpbia Evening Telegraph (Uep.)
General Grant simply has his
agents at work to obtain for hftn
the office o! President by any polit
ical fraud or trick which they can
invest and execute. The arbitrary,
knavish plane ot Cameron and Con
khng would be overthrown in a
moment if General Grant, in whose
name and to serve whoso ambition
they are schemed, were to repu
diate them. But he does not repu
diate them. lie goes up and down
the continent junketting at the ex
pense of communities, abiding by
the instruction given him by the
political “Bosses’* who once ruled
him to their own profit, his own
gieat shame, aud the country’s dis
honor, and who hope and expect to
rule him again in the same way.
To render their plaus unsuccess
ful, to preserve intact the honored
tradition, of the Government, the
perpetuity of popular rule, the pow -
er ot the Republican party by de
feating the candidacy of General
Grant, the * National Republican
League, and scores of kindred asso
ciations, have been formed; in
addition, a convention of Republi
can representatives from the whole
conntry has been called to meet at
St. Louis, and opposition to the
third term has even takeu the form
ot a call for a conuention to nomi
nate an anti-thud-term candidate
as against Grant in case, the plaus
of the “Bosses” succeed. The Lea
gues aud Associations and the Si.
Louis Convention may not know
it, but they have rlready done their
work. They may mot :t is true*
have done enough to defeat the
nomination of Grant; tiiey have
done enough to defeat his election,
There is no necessity to demand
that an independent candidate be
put in ihe field. Grant can ftn and
will be detea'pfl wi hotit it, if nom
inate'!. A thud party would be
open to the suspicions of a Dome
craiic trick, and it is not needed.
The time has gone by when either
Mr. Cameron, Mr. Conkling, or Mr.
Logan can force all R publicans to
vote as they dictated. The inde
pendent voter now decides who
shall be elected or not elected, and
if the third-term “Losses” succeed
in forcing the nomination of Grant
at Chicago they will then have done
their work. They will have defeat

own party; it will not De the Detno.

tial office, but the “Bosses’” who
have lost it m thrusting a candidate
upon the party whom the party
thought more objectionable than its
own temporary defeat.
