Reduction of Railroad Fares.
No act of the railroad commission will
meet with each universal commendation as
its rednotion of fares on the principal rail
roads in the State, from four to three
cents per mile. While the redaction will
be of great benefit to those who have to
travel it will not operate against the roads
as it will greatly increase travel. The re
dnoed rates go into effect on the fliat of
February It does not apply to the Colum
bus & Rome road, or to any abort branch
in the State. This ia to be regretted, and
it is to be hoped that these branches and
short roads, in deference to public opinion,
will exercise the privilege granted by the
commission by reducing their rales to cor
respond with those of the other roads, so
that the rate may be uniform throughout
the state- If these roa Is only appreciated
the travel lost by ihe present rates, we be
lieve they would reduce them at once, sim
ply as a buhiness measure. Upon this
giound scaly could we urge the reduction*

we need, want a id most have immediately,
the following iudeKpensab!e<t, and tba par
ties will do beat who fill the wants of onr
people. We want badly one first-class bar
neee maker, two boggy aod carriage mak
eia, ten first-class carpenters and one
bouse painter. We are ashamed of the fact,
but onr town does not contain one first
class resident workman of either of Ihe
above trades. We hare to trust to transi
ent oobblers and outsiders to do oar wotk.
This is one of the best locations in the
State. Just think of a town of our size
and business with none of these neoessarv
co-workers. X-

THE SUN FOR 1881.
Everybody reads The Bnn. In the edi
tions of this newspaper throughout the year
to come everybody will finds
I. All the world’s news, so presented that
tl e reader will get the grei test amount ot In
formation with the least unprofitable expen
diture of time and eyesight. The Sun long
info discovered the golden moan between re
dundant fulness and unsatisfactory brevity.
11. Much of that sort of news which de
pends less upon Its recogniz and importance
than upon Its interest to mankind. Kiom
morning to n ornlnsr The Sun prints a con
tinued story of Ihe lives ot real men and wo
men, and of their deeds, plans, loves, hates,
and troubles. This story is more varid aud
more interesting than any romance than was
ever devised.
111. (food writing in every column, and
freshness, originality, accuracy, and dtcor
um In the treatment of every Bubject.
IV. Honest comment. The Sun’s habit Is
to s|>eak out about men and tLingß.
V. Equal candor In dealing witu each po
litical party, and equal readiness to commend
what is praise worthy 01 to rebuke what is
blamablo in Democrat or Republican.
VI. Absolute inde|ieudenoe of partisan or
sranicatsous, but unwavering loyally tr true
Democratic principles. The Sun believes
that the Government which the Constitution
gives us Is a good one to keep Its notion of
dutv is to resist to its utmost power the ef
fwtsof men in the Republican party to set
up another form of government in place of
that which exists The year 1881 and the
years immodially followiug will probab.y de
cide this supremely important contest. The
t>un believes that the victory will be with
the people as agalfist the Rings for moaopoly
the Rings for plunder, and the Rings for im
pel ial power.
