The next fair of the Georgia Agricultural Society is to be hld at Macon. A better place could not have been selected. It ia worth a visit to that city to see Central City Paik. According to the Albany News and Ad vertiser, the delegates returning from the Agricultural Convention were very dry when they reached Albany, and all made a rush to the bar-rooms between trains. This is a canard on our progressive farmers. Rev. Dr. Wills offered Lord’s Prayer in the United States senate on Friday. When be had finished Senator McDonald leaned over to Kernan and remarked: '‘He stole that prayer, and I’ll bet on it. I heard the same meas expressed at a funeral in Indian npoiis over two years ago.”—Phonograph. Nothing has served to bring more foroiblv before the people the expensive machinery now naed in sopplyiug them with a circula ting medium, than the threat of the Nation al Banks, the only beneficiaries of this sys tem, to withdraw their circulation sbou and the President sigu .thejfundiug bill reoently passed by Congress. The people are al ready complaining under the power exer cised by these giant corporations in expand ing or oootraoting tile currency at will, and this attempt to oontrol legislation by the exercise of this pewer ought to serve as an eye opener to our law givers. Our Nation al Rank system is perfeot ever de vised, and with proper legislation oouid be made almost unobjectionable. Tba new funding bill is a move in this direction, and that it makes, the Banks squirm is ouly, ad ditional evidence to the people of its im portance. The three peroeut bond may not afford as much remuneration to the National Bank as the fives and sixes, bnt it still leaves a reasonable margin of profit, and if the old banking matitututions are not willing to furnish us notes on the terms proposed, we apprehend that new institutions will. It will not be a hard task to Bbow that there is money to be made by buying a three per cent bond, when it requires a very simple operation to deposit it as collateral and se cure ninety per eent of its face value in a c mutating medium as good as that paid or iginally tor the bond. The tax on the cir culation is only an institution of the cir cumlocution office, and virtually reduces the bond to little more than a two p r Cent, but with th'B there ought to be a margin of profiit large enough to satisfy reasonable men. To illustrate, as we understand the system. A National Bank is organized with a capital of SIOO,OOO. This amount is in vested in bonus, bearing three per cent, in terest which are deposited to secure a cir culation of $90,000. The bank has out of its working capital, by the operation, only ilO.OtiO —and draws an interest of $3,000 on ttie bunds for this outlay. Toe lax of one par cent on circulation reduces the net amount to $2,100, but 21 per cent per an num is a very good interest. Exceedingly good. Magazine Notes. —The Amencau Ag.iculmist is worthy of a place on the reading table of eveiy farmer in this country. How any farmer who loves his oalltng can do without it la a mystery to us. —The Southern Farmer’s Monthly is sec ond to no agricultural journal in point of interest, while it is a delight to the eye in its typographic execution. We are proud of it as a Georgia institution and would be glad if every one of our farmer friend* would sub scribe for it. They would be made better farmers thereby. —The March number Of Godey, the peer of the ladies magazines, is a bright at anew dollar. I‘resident Garfield. To day—Friday, March 4th—General Garfield is to be inaugurated President of these United States. We anticipate good results from his administration- We shall not obtain under it perhaps quite as many lucrative positions for gentlemen acqnain tenoes of uora. but if the southern people wilt devote as muob attention to the more pressing necessities of the home cirole, and leave onr governmental relations in the back ground for a season, they will have little cause to regret tbo recent demooratio defeat. General Garfield ia the first patty leader elected to the office of President in many years. Ho has hesn accused of pe culiar weaknesses, bnt as a leader of his party in the lower house of Congress, he has shown a power to oontrol that is phen omenal. He is a Christian statesman, and while we may differ with him in his ideas of oentrsliz.tion and in his sllegianos to republicanism, at the same Mme we expect as muob good from his administration as we oouid from the present Isadora of the democratic party who seem to be controlled more by motives of policy than principle.
