Atlanta Cotton Exposition.
A special to tlio New York Her
ald dated Atlanta, March 5, say*:
The plans tor the building tor Ihe
cotton exposition have been accept
ed and the loc-uiou decided on.
The building will represent a model
cotton factory and will bo placed
in the centre of the race track t
Oglethorpe Park. After the expo*
sition the building will be bought
by a cotton factory company. Over
$20,000 ha* been subscribed in At
lanta, and the $35,000 allotted to
her in the sub>oriphon scheme will
be forthcoming. The election of
Mr. 11. I Kimball as chairman of
the executive committee put the
ablest possible organizer in charge
of a Hairs, and he will command con
fidence North and South. General
Sherman will head flic northern list
with $2,000, he has a weak spot in
his heart tor Atlanta since his visit
in 1804. One of the schemes of
Mr. Kimball is to have President
Brown of Ihe exposition appear m
a suit of cloihes on the second
night of the exposition, .lie cotton
in which was growing in the field
the day before the picking, ginning,
spuming and the weaving to be
done before a committee, A cot
ton field, illustrating the various
methods of cotton culture, will be
part of the exposition scheme. Mr.
Kimball is astonished at the scope
and variety of inventions for the im
provement of cotton culture or
manufseture already guaranteed
for the exposition One ot the most
important of these and one that
is new is a machine for picking cot
ton. It lias been considered impos
ible to furnish a substitute for hu
man labor in picking cotton, but
the new machine is cudoised as
practicable hy leading authorities
in the Mississippi Valley. The
cotton stall s aro pulled up, bunched
and fed into the machine. It is
claimed that pulling the stalk be
fore the bolls are picked improves
the quality of cotton. It is clear
that iho cotton exhi 11 ion will boa
most aotible exposition of now in
ventions for the culiure and hand -
ling of our great staple. The eon -
tract for tne buildings will be awar
di-dub only, the plans adopted having
been drawn under the personal su
pervision of Mr. Edward Atkinson,
ot Boston.
Atlanta Constitution: '‘Wednes
day a noarly fatal result followed
the drinking ol a quantity of whis
ky by a small boy on Decatur street.
The boy in question conduct* a
fruit stand near the corner of D -oa
tttr and Ivy and it, appears that
early in the morning ho had sold
some apples to a Irioml of bis own
age, whose fa*her is proprietor of a
saloon, and had taken half a pint
of rye whisky in payment. Nearly
the entire amount of the fiery I quid
was awullowed bv the young hill'
dealer, and being the first whisky
he. had ever taken, the resit ts wore
most distressing. Aboil' 12 o’oock
lie was picked lip on t-bo railroad
near the car -lied in an insensible
condition and taken to the drug
store of Dr. Fred King, w here he
received medical attention.”
German physiologists have been
experimenting to assertain the he.-t
mode of restoring frozen animal hie,
and they announce that the hitherto
accept*d theory that persons who
have been exposed too long t o ex
treme cold should not be brought
into contact warmth except by
slow degrees is wholly erroneous.
Dogs were frozen by anificial ap
plications of cold un il breathing
and pulsation had almost wholly
ceased, and then attempts were
made to restore twenty of them in a
cold room, twenty in a warm room,
and twenty,'iu a haih of warm wa
ter. Of the first, fourteen died; of
the second, eight; of the last, none.
The warm hath brough about res
toration in a remarkably short tune.
Says the Post-Appeal: “The
camp of the penitentiary convicts,
which are now located on the Ma
con and Brunswick liailroad, are to
he moved to the camps on the Ma
netta and North Georgia Railroad.
Captain Nelms says that there are
now about i,150 conviols in the va
rious prison camps of the Stale.
The largest, number in anyone place
is at the Dade Road mines, where
there are about 350 at work in the
mines. Keeper Nelms says that the
number of convicted criminals is
yearly decreasing, and that the de
crease for the year 1878 and 1879
was about 124 uer cent., and that it
was about 15 yer cent, for the year
1880, which is a truly gratifying
statement.”
