We agree with the St. Louis Republican, that it is a cause ot great congratulation that whilo the political caldron is boiling furiously at Washington, and \v Idle a resi¬ dent ol mat city during the past two months might probably imag¬ ine that the world was being turn d unside down, the excitement does not extend to the country at lai’ge. Phis latter, it truthfully remarks, s utterly unaffected in its real life ■ iy the complications at the capital — the mortal quarrel between the President and Senator Conkltng, she stubborn tight in the Senate oetweei^ the democrats and repub¬ licans, the Mahone bargain and the lelayed confirmations. Of course here is a lively interest felt in New Turk over tno Garfielil-Conkling rupture, and in Virginia about the outcome ot Mahone-s tangenlieal experiment; but the country is at perfect repose. It does not feel a single emotion of apprehension. It does not give tho faintest response to the uproar at Washington, li is busy buying', selling, building, plowing, planting, travelling, con„ eeiving new enterprises, organizing new schemes of production anil in lerchange, substituting short cuts lor long routes, reaching the Paoif ic at new points, piercing Mexico by anticipation, and spreading the magical influence of modern forces uvor regions hitherto left to soli¬ tude and inaction. The country, indeed, feels and exhibits a thrill of animation and even of excitement, but it does not come from wrangling at the cupital; it is the thrill of a new prosperity. There is improvement pereepdble everywhere. The old causes, real and artificial, of discord between the North and South, have utterly disappeared. The sections arc satisfied with otic another'. Tho concord between the states is be¬ coming tnoro cordial every day. All sections of the land are so prosperous that each imagines Hs prospetity to be special and excep¬ tional. The cdtmtry is in i oj money and in rapidly ltnerging from debts that have burdened ii (or sixteen years. Onr exports are exceeding our imports at the rate $285,000,000 a year, and we have scarcely disposed of one enormous crop of grain and cotton before a now one, equally enormous is promised in the ocean of emerald now spreading over twenty-five degrees of latitude. A people are never so happy anil contented as when so absorbed it) their pursuits as to fortret, politics—and that is exactly the cunditiuii of our people at this time. This is indeed a grat¬ ifying picture, and the more grati¬ fying because it ia true. AYu arc also specially glad to believe that the South, of all sections of the country, is pre-eminently in the happy condition desbribed. The people are beginning to realize that politics per se is a very un¬ profitable employment, and # tbat with wealth secured, public influence will follow naturally. So they are bending their energies towards getting rich, and what is more, are in a lair way of accomplishing their object. The Coluuibns 'limes improves upon the weddins least of the Pro gressive Age ia tho following style: Last evening the GypsteS cele¬ brated titeir second annual. Tho spot selfecied was near by tho one chosen last, that was the glad ush¬ ering in of their existence, just a twelve mouths since. It was near a new found spring, gushing front tho foot of a 'beech grown bank that, wound itself laughingly over the pebles to the moon-lit river shortly after the glorious King of the East had westered far-a-down and the mauve-tinted twilight had assumed its soft inner sea-shell sleDdings, the gypsies tripod.pot was bung over the burning em¬ bers and amidst the wild and gros tesqtie scenery of Chattahoochee, the Baud began to hold high carni¬ val. Seething and boiling was the order ol the night, and each and every one stood around dancing until the “elixer of life” might, bo skimmed therefrom, and as the light troth was fortunately dipped up each and every one repaired to a flower-decked pavilion where Terp¬ sichore held sway, and to the enchanting strains, setter than three made by Apollo’s lute strung with his golden hair, danced by the weir glare of the camp fire until the pale, chaste moon like a ship in the heav¬ ens threw upon the enchanted scene her silver hues. Then the custom, (more honored in the breach than the observance among Gypsies) took place—champagne corks began to fly, and Lunas rays sparkled among the leaves, with their silver sheen—and minglea with the gold¬ en sparkles of Madame Gliquot’s, as the sweet wind did whistle through the trees. But this could not always last, Terpsichore again called and held sway until Aihenae —goddess of light—forewarned that “uight would soon put out her candles, and that joooinb day would soon be tip-toeing o’er the mystic mountain tops” and then Vo home in such a drive! It was such a night as that “Dido stood upon the wild sea banks and waved her love to come again to’ Carthage,’’ soft, cool and deliciou-; and thus amidst these delights ended the second picnic ot tlie Gyp-ics- M i.
